Hal Hartley interviewed by Mariella Frostrup about Amateur. Amateur was released in the UK on 6 Jan 1995, so this would probably have aired that week. Uploaded from an ancient, degraded VHS tape.

Splendid! Thank you🎉
1999/2000 a season to remember at Priestfield and this performance was a real highlight Nicky Southall's goal was stunning. As for Wednesday well this season painful and this humbling was a real real low Danny Wilson was very fortunate to still be in a job after this. He could Sir Dave Richards the then Wednesday chairman for being so loyal. As soon as he left to be chairman of the Premier League Wilson was on borrowed time and a loss to Watford meant the end of the road.
Larry Appleton from Perfect Strangers at 5:30.
meh, this sounds awful. i like this song but what was that?!
bless her heart
Bellissimo grazie mille ❤
All John Major achieved as PM was to f*ck BR. It would be two but I can’t confirm he actually f**ked curry.

Not just the railways as we now find. Don't just blame Thatcher and Shagger Major, Angels compared to what we have in Government now. End Times.
It's enlightening to realise that the Conservatives were no more competent in the 1990s than they are now. Driven by idology, with no understanding of the consequences.
Brilliant doco. Thank you so much!
virgin had the pendolino train. br had the peadolino train
To the signaller, no, Byers and the government didn't steal your future. The botched mechanism that created Railtrack in the first place stole it. It wasn't created with the engineering focus it needed, instead bean counters were placed at the top and all the maintenance contracted out.
Bill Clinton does a disservice to his characters
Thanks for uploading! I'm completely fascinated with this film, and it's pretty cool seeing Hal Hartley talk about it in the same period when it was released. Have a nice day!
“You pour the oil on your own head.” True, I love writers, and writing.
To write about your Jewishness and Jewish life as well as sex is to be courageous. Yes, Roth was a stand-up comic, emphasis on “stand-up”which means you stand up for who you are. In Roth’s case, he was born and brought up a Jew, a writer and a highly sexual man. His way of standing up for himself was to own it all as he saw it. “Portnoy’s Complaint” is one of the funniest books of all time. You miss it at your peril.
I agree with you, Roth is undeniably brilliant. But Roth's writing has also contributed to the general erosion of gentility, nobility, propriety, and chastity that characterised gentile society pre-WW2. Cultural standards have shifted dramatically partly due to the unprecedented influence of the Hebraic character. Many consider this a 'liberation' and a very good thing. Personally, I have my doubts...
@@mongolianqwerty123coming from a subscriber to Luis J. Gomez’s channel, that seems quite rich.
@@mikequinlivan8842 Well, "Coke Magic" is the clear and obvious exception lol
Brilliant writer and raconteur.. alas, his imposter was correct about zionism.
I haven't really read anything by Roth until I started Nemesis (2010) a short novel of his. I have heard lots about him. I am not in his target audience per se, but I liked what he said about fiction inventing events and inventing consciousness because consciousness is an invention. I agree that great writers create powerful experiences for readers. Maybe I'll pick up American pastoral or came back to Roth.
Read Sabbath’s Theater.
As a writer of non-fiction Remnick is Roth's equal; indeed, I'd argue he is even better. Two of his best books: The Devil Problem and Reporting, superb examples of his work from The New Yorker, the magazine he has edited for some years now, taking over from the equally brilliant TinaBrown. That he, his editors, those behind the scenes- and of course the writers- manage to produce a magazine of such quality EVERY WEEK strikes as miraculous.
One of my favourites
Italian westerns are so cool and influential ❤
The bit introducing Peter Parker alongside savile is a bit weird, especially with him putting his legs up like that. I feel like that was a bit strange
Need Step Into The Breeze from this era
❤❤❤😭🥺
Probably the best thing ever
I couldn’t agree more with Roth when he expresses his frustration when he’s referred to as a “Jewish writer”. He has so captured the American experience, ethos, Zeitgeist, etc of the second half of the 20th century, that he’s simply unrivaled as THE great American writer…..who just happens to be Jewish. But given that Bellow would be my second favorite, there’s obviously something to the Jewish “thing”, but it’s tough to pin down just exactly what that thing is. But it’s fun to analyze, think about. As an Irish Catholic boy from Detroit, I’ve simply accepted Leon Uris’ theory that there’s very definitely a consanguinity between we Irish & Jews, based on things like Diaspora, love of literature, conversation and a very similar sense of humor. Uris was the first “Jewish”(American) writer I fell in love with upon reading his novel Trinity at the age of 17, and I recall pondering the mystery at that time of how the hell a Jewish American writer was able to so completely capture the Irish culture, history, language/conversation, rhythm, etc.
One of the best American authors!
I believe Hartley does not get any recognition these days
10:21 lmao it was a silly question indeed
Let it Flow! ❤️❤️❤️❤️🙌🙌🙌🙌🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️😻😻😻🙏🙏🙏🙏
Lot like Luis Bunuel
Thank you for uploading this!
If he approved of 'The Human Stain' film rendering...........the obvious was before, and law enforcement would have decided good riddance....the Harris character was a stupid sidebar

Jesus Billy, gets me every time. A better lyricist anywhere I think not.
There are many - but yes - he is very talented.
Jack Wheatcroft, Philip Roth - writing together again at last
"Helen Mirren or Warren Oates". Feel like he could have picked better examples of iconic actors.
"The mismanagement of the railways in Britain since the 1970s" could really be "mismanagement of the railways since their inception and the total gutting of BR by Thatcher because she couldn't separate her emotions from logic, and then a total bodge job by Major's government out of spite towards the Labour opposition"
LMAO. I love when Roth calls Remnick a communist . . . I mean, not that far off.
Doughty is a legend ... Great upload
That penthouse from which Saville is being interviewed overlooks the spot where Irene Richardson was murdered by Peter Sutcliffe!
And Yojimbo was a rip of of Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett.
I have enjoyed this piece a great deal.
Kudos to Remnick, it can't be easy to form a challenging interview for the great man. He succeeds.
Admirably.
What a genius. Roth is fascinating.
Please pronounce his name correctly - it is Philip Roth. "Roth" is pronounced as if in "Rot".
Get a grip.
The sixties radical would be canceled today, and what passes as intellectual freedom in the university now is anything but.
Great memories. Don’t know how that temporary Medway stand stood up in that wind and insane celebrations.
