For anybody who has listened to Drivers License notices that she only says ‘drivers license’ once in the first verse and never again throughout the song. She used ‘Drivers License’ as her title because it really is a metaphor to her relationship with her ex. In real life, getting your drivers license would be a big step or achievement in someones life and thinking that everything would be okay after that. However, in the case of the song, drivers license signifies how she thought her relationship with her ex would be good and that she would be happy with him but it did not happen that way. She’s trying to be happy because she went through something big in her life but can’t celebrate because he is not there with her anymore. She’s expecting to be happy but now she just feels sad and unsatisfied. People love the song because she sings with so much emotion that’s taken from her heartbreaking experience with her ex, it’s very relatable and people connect to it, and it’s also her first debut song which is really impressive. The line that hit hard for me in the song was ‘I just can’t imagine how you could be so okay now that I’m gone’: Being in a relationship that meant so much to one person and assuming my the other, but watching someone moving on and being happy would make you think ‘was our relationship not meaningful enough for you to just move on so quickly’. Edit: I also have to say that the bridge of the song was just amazing. That’s the part when the song just builds then just crashes with all of the emotions of loss and all the memories of the time she spent with her ex. Beautiful yet heartbreaking.
