To a degree... yes, many of us are trash humans and wont admit it.
But because of that, we arent all the way bad....
We have SUBJECTIVELY bad parts of us (good and bad is subjective)but we often still try to do good and want to do good.
In my life I know some horrrrrrrrible people that shouldnt have freedom, but they also feel guilt and try to do better and help people.
It's just not as easy as all good or all bad, you learn that growing up😂
1 thing can be great for you but horrible for somebody else
Not making any excuses for any crimes, trash is trash and we should be able to admit when we are inadequate humans. Made from broken parts, no good for anyone.

That's not true. We let people get away because we didn't get all our steps or, in most cases, the staff to apprehend is not there at the time. A lot of times it's because we are so understaffed they simply get away with it because we don't know it's happening for a long while. Currently that build up to a felony nonsense is over. $50 on the first time is all we need to nab you now.

Just because a store doesn't call the cops on you doesn't mean you weren't caught stealing.
Sometimes, loss prevention will wait until the total value of stolen items reaches the felony threshold for shoplifting before pressing charges on someone.
The felony threshold for shoplifting varies by state. New Jersey has the lowest threshold at $200. Texas and Wisconsin have the highest threshold at $2,500.

@@lunchb0x1986it can be seen as abusive ( in a sense of speaking) when you are using your child as a tool to help with the theft. As someone pointed out in another comment thread "they hope the child will start to cry as the mother is being arrested and will let her go". Sadly has worked at my store once where we were baffled because the cops were called. The mother gave a sob story about how she needed the clothes for her kid and the officers paid for the clothes so she wouldn't be booked for theft. Thinking on it now they either truly felt bad, didn't want to deal with the paperwork, or probably wouldn't know how to proceed with the kid because I think the mother was alone with her kids. I just remember the person in charge of LP at the time was furious because it definitely gave the child the wrong message to see their mother getting away with trying to steal lol.

She’s most likely done this a lot considering they arrested her. More often than not, big stores like that will notice you shoplifting but can’t arrest you until you’ve stolen a certain amount for it to be considered shoplifting. So if they catch you stealing something from them that’s, say, $10, not too big of a deal. They will keep an eye on you but won’t call the police. But if you steal every time you go there, they’re keeping track of what you’ve stolen until it hits a certain price amount for them to call the police and charge you with shoplifting.

It's not that they "can't", they just won't. They view it as a waste of manpower and maybe increasing the size of the lesson to be learned, but I also legitimately believe that it strains constitutionality. It's very grey at best and unconstitutional at worst for cops to just watch someone rack up charges if they can intervene but don't, so I'm not sure why it would be okay for corps to do the same thing. I wouldn't be surprised if this behavior were challenged at state or federal Supreme Court levels at some point. Not saying that I sympathize or agree with the ones committing the crimes, but we should all be concerned when anyone's civil rights are violated, especially by large corporations (who already have many rights and privileges that individuals do not).

Let her reoffend at the original location and make it easier.

Target specifically has a reputation for not seeking to prosecute until the *total* amount that someone has stolen totals over $1000 (or whatever the threshold is for a more serious theft charge in that region). They will literally sit on footage of people shoplifting and wait until they've done it enough times that Target can really throw the book at them. And Target's notorious for this! It's a bad idea to shoplift, but it's a PARTICULARLY bad idea to shoplift AT TARGET. And they cultivate that reputation VERY intentionally.
Target also has two criminal forensics labs that are so highly regarded that they will sometimes be consulted by the police, the FBI, and other agencies on unrelated criminal matters. They *do not mess around.*

When I was a youth, there was a popular TV show called 'America's Most Wanted', where they'd dramatize recent crimes and show shots of the people who committed them. Cheap content, I suppose. Anyway, through other channels you'd her criminals talk about how THEY watched the show too... they thought it was FUNNY. They'd brag if they were on it instead of panicking, and laugh at the ones who were caught. They all thought they were better than that.
TL;DR: People who think they're going to be caught aren't criminals in the first place. People who think they're too clever to be caught have no real reason to ever stop.

@ I do remember that program, that and the dateline nbc show with Chris Hansen. Are the two shows that come two mind where you have the people laughing not thinking it would happen to them, watch all the episodes, then they end up in the show hands in their face blocking their identity.

A store two houses over from me just removed their self checkout because people kept stealing things by scanning and then not paying. I'm furious because I was able to go in there, get what I need and be out in under 60 seconds and now I have to spend more time at the checkout than getting my items. People like this really just ruin it for everyone else (and themselves of course). Also imagine doing this while you have kids depended on you. Unbelievable.

omg I went shopping for clothes recently and literally everything in the men's section was locked up. Boxers, socks, shirts. And that would have been fine for me the weird part to me is that the women's section wasn't like that.

The stores in our area now have a ‘store within a store’ for higher value and cosmetic items like deodorant, makeup, baby products etc. There is no self checkout and you must buy everything in your cart before you leave that area. I actually like it a lot more, no waiting for deodorant!

The petty theft annoys me to no end because, first, I'm a retail employee in a 'blue' State with deplorably lax shoplifting policies and consequences, and second, he's right about the inevitable closures of physical stores. I LIKE shopping in stores. That's always been a fun reason to leave the house, and I enjoy seeing other (honest paying) customers taking pleasure in finding items they like. I tend to only buy things online when they're not available in stores, or locally.

Lmao this is my husband's favorite part of his job. He's a manager at a very large grocery store and they have I think 5 sets of self checkout around the store at different exits. He loves so much when a cashier tells him they think someone was doing exactly as this lady and trying to scam the machine. Since it's a grocery store they usually grab something like chapstick or candy and try to palm it and pass it over the scanner under or right ahead of their actual items. Anyway he pulls the camera and receipt can see what they're doing gets loss prevention to chase them down if they haven't left the lot and calls the cops. If they get out of the store and are in their car lp runs out there writes down plate and description and hands it off to cops. Small bit of joy and entertainment husband gets at that job lololol
