As an adopted Asian American growing up in a predominately white suburb, I feel this. Funny enough, I remember facing racism like this as a child. Two kids were calling me “China Man” (even though I’m Korean) and one of them knelt behind me while the other pushed me over. I went crying to my dad and told him what happened and he told me not to come crying and to stand up for myself. I walked directly up to the kid who pushed me and punched him square in the nose. Maybe not the best way of solving conflict in hindsight, but yeah… totally felt this opening scene.
Fellow adopted Asian-American here! I watched the movie with my mom and told her after the opening scene how excited I was that a movie like this even exists. Growing up, I couldn't find stories in movies, books, or TV that connected to this part of my life or upbringing. My brother was adopted from another Asian country and we experienced a lot of bullying and ignorant questions about our ethnicities/adoptions. But our mom was always proud of us for standing up for ourselves. She cheered when Lolo punched the boy in his face!
Honestly baby, I think you handled that the best way you could. Because he walked up and done something aggressive towards you. And you don't let somebody overtake you. So you done the right thing kudos to you❤❤❤
As someone who is adopted, idk why but when those kids said that she mustve done something or that her mom just didnt want her, it made me sad 😢 ive always heard “oh but do you ever want to find your REAL parents” and it always breaks my heart. Why cant some people just mind their business. Hilarious movie tho wish i had someone like me (same ethnicity) as a friend when i was growing up
This is messed up for me to say but you bore your soul a bit, so what the hell. I always hoped I was adopted. That one day my birth parents would show up, or they’d say there was a mixup with another baby. For context I was shy, quiet, reserved and wanted peace. Kind of hard to find in a loud, proud, Chicano familia. I was also ALWAYS told I “looked” Asian, so I held out hope for that. You were very fortunate, you were chosen, hand selected. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Literally what I needed as a child. My brother and I were the only Japanese kids in school and I would have loved to have one person to keep my head up. Sadly, I ended up being the one to keep my own head up. Still no friends.
It's never too late to make friends~ even online friends can become good friends, one of my best friends has a discord group that they hangout constantly and they are every cool (sometimes they invite me, they play games, watch movies together etc.). Just share to the world what you like and some people with similar interests could show up. Good luck on that, wish you the best at it.
I had a best friend just like the one that flip people off. She pass away a year ago. I miss her. We met in 5th grade. 30yrs ago. May she rest in peace. ❤❤❤❤😇
My cousins are adopted Koreans that grew up in our New York Italian family. Watching them cursing out bewildered rascists with a native Brooklyn accent was a real pleasure.
Nah, I don't think so. If she said 外國人, that means foreigners. But she actually said 老外, I think that translated to white people makes more sense. The thing is we don't say 老外, we actually say 老美.
I was adopted because my birth mom could not take care of me and I don’t know much about her but iam grateful to have my current parents and I think there great parents to have in life and I really like how the girl stands up for herself and her friend. And those kids were making fun of her but a couple years later she was really successful. So who ever feels alone out there because of being adopted don’t feel alone because a lot of us have been adopted.❤
I’m an adopted South Korean who was born in Seoul and both my parents are Swedish. So blonde hair and blue eyes 😂 as are all my cousins, uncles and aunts, etc. I grew up in rural Missouri until I was about 16 when we moved to New England. Ironically I had an exponentially more difficult time in New England than Missouri in terms of dealing with idiots or slight racism. Although both of my parents are not violent nor are they confrontational I learned at an early age that when idiots say things of this nature eventually they’ll try to do something physical to you. So just skip all that pushing and in your face nonsense and tune them up.
I agree with what you're saying I would add this to if This was an American in a China. He would be told he needs to respect the culture and that he's acting disrespectful. Remember the karate kid with Jayden Smith? That kid was beaten up and bullied throughout the entire movie and yet he was told that he needed to show respect. Play Asians and other foreigners in American movies are told to hack even worse than the people around them.
I needed this as a kid 😩 my childhood best friend moved to Texas (from pa)when we were 7&8 and left me as the only black child most years. This would have been awesome 💜
It’s interesting to see how movies tend to borrow or repurpose footage from other movies as opposed to shooting anything new, it’s a pretty cost efficient method; I wonder how these studios get the rights to use it.
Damn this made me miss my school best friend. We did everything together from ages 4 to 17. But then he moved to California and I moved away as well. I've been looking for him nearly 20 years but no luck. Hopefully I'll see him again some day before I run out of time. I hope he's doing good.
I remember the same situation in school, being bullied about why I was adopted. It was kinda fun scaring all my classmates... my real parents when to jail for murder. Lucky to be adopted by a great family.
Ive been to a bar that had board games as long as it didnt have dice and it was infact the whitest mf bar i ever sat foot in before i turned tf around 😂😂😂
The first bully delivered his lines perfectly. The performances of the kids in the class felt to scripted. From what i remember bullying was a little less direct so the teacher was more likely to ignore it. Hopefully the actors dont face any backlash for their performances.
1:31 Audrey's parents' excitement at her making a friend is genuinely one of the cutest things I've seen
I adore them
Call me a softie but I teared up it was so cute
I actually teared up at that and then again when i read your comment
Can anyone tell me the backgroud music..?? 1:16?

The way Lolo's mom smiled when she saw Audrey was also Chinese made me tear up... ❤️
Joy Ride is literally just the Hangover but with girls and it is absolutely fabulous.

What makes me so mad is that the teacher didn’t do anything to the children that were bullying Audrey.
US Public School at its finest.

Three words: OLD. WHITE. MAN.

The scream I scrumpt when the boy got kicked by the kid on the swing 😂😂

It's cute how she stood up for her friend
1:33 moments where actors weren't acting
A set worker I know said the three kids couldn't stop laughing between takes because of how absurdly mean the lines were
We all need a Lolo in our lives.
LOL, what she said about "Look at all the white people." in Chinese was actually "So many foreigners" but the fact is they are the foreigners
I live in a place where some local people changed their ways of living to suit the mainland chinese people. I really know how it feels

Yeah what state is that anyway? Is it one of those that’s diverse they just wound up immigrating to the mostly white part/s?
