Hello! Nice and informative video! I have a question : how skilled jumpers are they? Same as bettas or worst? I have a small opening in the aquarium lid, the place where the filter hoses get in, so about 5 cm minus the hoses diameters. Should I worry about this opening?
Thanks. Killifish are very skilled jumpers, and the australe is one of the best. I recommend closing the opening, with som kind of foam, to secure your fish. Cheers, Michael :0)
Do you think it is possible to include them together with other types of killifish in a 60 liter aquarium? if so which ones? Killifish are very interesting to me! Are these fish shy towards humans and what happens around the tank? Is it possible to include them together with some type of barbel? Excuse my English
Hi Anna Maria. Most killifish will do well together as long as they are relatively equal in size and temperament. They usually respons well to activity outside the tank, and will show up when you come near the tank (begging for food). I have never kept killis with barbs, and I don't think this is a good idea. Hej Finn. Mange tak for dit feedback. Med de fleste killifisk handler det blot om to ting: Regelmæssige vandskift (især fordi de ofte sættes til leg i små akvarier) og god fordring (gerne med levende foder eller frostfoder). Hvis de to faktorer er i orden, leger fiskene hver dag. Jeg har relativt blødt vand i mine akvarier, da jeg bruger regnvand og supplerer med RO-vand, når det er nødvendigt. Temperaturen veksler i alle mine akvarier mellem 18-20 grader og op til 24 - 28 i perioder - da jeg ikke har varmelegemer i. Både fisk og planter trives og formerer sig livligt alligevel. Michael :0)
Nice video! 🎉I have kept killifish for a year now without a single egg or fry. I gave them both frozen food and flakes, room temperature and what I would say a good amount of plants. I heard they would be easy to breed but I don’t really agree. I was thinking they needed warmer water or if the yarn is necessary. I kept two females and a male and now a third female when the first ones died. I think our petstores sells old fish that generally don’t live long. They where together with guppies that already had fry and that was a big mistake because the killi ate the guppy fry instantly and ate even big fry that didn’t go down directly without chewing on it.. 😮 I think they are beautiful 😍 but I will only keep them with fish that doesn’t have fry available. 😵💫
Hi Emma. Mostly all aquarium fish will eat fry, that has a suitable size. That is just their nature. I don't know if you kept the killifish in a species tank, while you were trying to breed them. For killifish fry to survive in a tank, there need to be lots of mosses and floating plants, so they can hide from the adults... and other fish. If they were kept together with the guppies, I feel confident that the female guppies, would be the first to eat the killi fry. But I don't understand that if you don't get eggs from the killifish. It might be a good idea to put a mop in the tank, and check it daily. Just to find out if the problem is that the fish don't produce eggs (which I doubt) or the eggs and fry is eaten. The fry are extremely small. If you are up to it, you could follow the procedure I describe in the video: picking out the eggs from mops. I have a video on how to make mops as well. Can I put them in a 20 gallon long with my cherry shrimp?
You can, but they will eat small shrimps. But so will most similar sized tetras, rasboras, levebearers and other popular fish. Cheers :0)
