      What I liked about them is there's this issue where the panel that that either front McPherson strut tower anchors onto can completely rust away. Thus if you have that problem, hitting a pothole could make the strut punch through and you completely lose steering possibly driving into a ditch or oncoming traffic. Yet somehow (Daimler) Chrysler never had a recall on that shit. And those cars are still driving around out there.

      Yuriy Pono had a 1997 Plymouth grand voyager SE w/ 3.3L V6 and it lasted until 225,000 miles then we had it rebuilt. Our 2001 Town and country LXi 3.8L V6 w/ factory tow package and it was rebuilt at 175,000 miles and now has 240,000 miles. My neighbor has a 2004 dodge grand caravan 3.3L V6 and it has 320,000 miles and never been replaced

      pauljs75 Diamler Chrysler was also too cheap to put brake shift interlock on their vans until the early 2000's. little kids would pull down the gearshift and the vans would roll away. A few people died from being ran over by vans that rolled away. Apparently it would have only cost Chrysler $7 per vehicle to install it and they said it was too expensive. Such needless loss of life over a company being cheap.

      @joevignolor4u949 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @ SIOAX - My landlord had one of these Ford DTC's like yours and was having similar problems, but it has been fixed so it can be done. We found out that one of the big issues is the particular dealer you are going to. Some employ technicians that have more knowledge and skills working on these transmissions than others. The dealer we went two apparently has two full time certified Ford transmission people working there on staff. This clutch/transmission work is very specialized and intricate, plus they need to have the right tools, scanners, updated parts along with the knowledge required to fix one of these correctly. You need to get your vehicle somewhere that has all the right capability to fix it properly once and for all. You might try another dealership, but ask them to show you the certificates from Ford verifying that they are trained on these transmissions so as to ensure that the technicians are completely competent and know exactly what they are doing.

      +rage fards They were more vulnerable to it than other cars, but it's like a lot of car flaws, just money for the lawyers to make. There was a bumper bolt near the fuel tank that _could_ puncture it, so they recalled them and put a barrier between that bolt and the tank.

    • @l337pwnage
      @l337pwnage 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Curtyos Ya, it's funny how that goes. Fuel tanks used to be near the passengers to protect the tank, then people got hurt by fuel being close to them in an accident, so they moved tanks further away, usually the rear where they were more likely to leak in an accident, and now they put them closer to the passengers again. lol.

      The Turd having owned a 2014 Focus with the "automatic" dct trans I can say it should be on the list of shittiest transmissions. Jerky as hell, unresponsive, even had it jump out of gear as I'm doing 45mph. But Ford as usual won't replace them until it completely fails and even then it's a pain in the ass to get them to do the right thing. Was soooo happy when I finally traded it in!!!!

      JoshCraver9000 is that the transmission in my 09 Camry? it shifts like a bad manual driver and sometimes bangs gears/late shifts, and if I break quickly or suddenly then try to accelerate afterwards it slips the transmission then drops it abruptly into gear. I have 140 something thousand miles and can't afford another transmission. This sucks. don't expect this from a Toyota.

      The gas tank was mounted behind the rear axle and in front of the rear bumper. In rear end accidents the tank could easily be punctured by bolts from near by brackets and from the differential. The filler neck for the tank also tended to tear which would spill fuel beneath the car. So yes, they tended to present a danger with rear end crashes. Jeeps too have had issues with their own gas tank designs and placement.

    • @glennso47
      @glennso47 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 1970 Chevy Impala had the fuel filler under the rear license plate. I constantly had problems with people stealing my gasoline until I was finally informed about locking gas caps. As the car got older the fuel filler tube began to leak. There was also no inside the passenger cabin latch for the hood. You simply reached through a small opening in the grille and opened it from outside. Once some guy stole my battery that way and would've stole the carburetor if he'd had the right tools. BTW I was born and grew up in a small rural community where stuff like this was unheard of. I started being ripped off when I moved to a larger city.

      My aunt had a Mustang with that Trans, with the V8. Nothing but problems, of course hers was a 2006, bought brand new November 2005 . About 2 months after she bought it, it would randomly shift into neutral just rolling down the road. other times, it would not shift at all, or just not move. She took it three Dealerships, and a couple independent mechanics, none of them could figure it out. the dealership initially claimed nothing was wrong, because their scanners failed to throw a code. The stupid transmission didn't even have a dipstick, it was sealed. They ended up trading it in at Barreth Chrysler and getting a New Jeep and a Used 2004 Cummins Diesel Ram. My uncle swore off Fords after that Horrendous car.

      I was aware, the example only served because its one of the most extreme examples where you'll still have people using daily. Still, the change in the amount of power most sports cars manual transmissions will take without mods, average shift times and even number of gears is pretty noticeable over the last 5 years.
      So I disagree manuals don't get outdated, most car generations do indeed outdate the old transmission, to the extent that using a newer models transmission is common for people heavily modifying many sorts of car, even while retaining the factory engine (a classic example is the GTR). On the other hand I do agree duel clutches are changing more between versions still, but these new versions come with refreshes of similar frequency (normally aligning with stylistic facelifts every few years), and in both cases the old offering is outmoded. The rate of change between generations of duel clutch sequential will slow down rapidly as manufactures get a few generations out, especially because there is not the same sorts of theoretical difference that are present when something the like CTV's came out.

      yes they are Bad as the plague . Had an m3 smg suddenly it did not engage the first gear, then the second , finally I had to start with 3rd gear. The actual truth about the SMG is a mystery, some say that the actuator was close to the exhaust heat, thus causing to overheat and start stepping gears. Others say that the procedure to use it had to be different. Some others that the gear selector worn out faster, so the problems would star to appear around 50 K . The fact is that BMW screw up a pretty good car with a shitty transmission. If I ever buy another M3 e46 would be the old fashioned stick. On the other hand DKG are the best that they made

      Nicholas Smith I disagree. I have a 2015 435i and a 2008 135i and the E-Shifter feels better. In manual mode it feels crisper, you can change drive mode faster, and there is no chance that you will be in the wrong drive mode by accident as long as you gave it the right amount of bumps. There are a lot of things BMW used to do better, but the automatic gear selector is not one of them.

    LOL I have a car with one of the WORST transmissions of all time. The 6th gen V6 Honda Accord EX automatic transmission. That f*cking thing sucks and it was NEVER recalled. They tend to just stop going into gear due to pump failure. On top of that the only way to fix it is to get an entirely new transmission and even THEN there is no options for a manual. Overall it sucks..... So far mine has 81k on it (original transmission) for a 2002. It's not bad but it can be quirky.

    Another terrible tranny, just because it's super annoying, the EatonFuller automated gearbox. It's a normal EF gearbox mechanically, it just does all the gear change work for you after you let off the clutch, floating gears. The problem is it can never decide what gear it wants to be in. Rally annoying in a 12 or 18 speed. Hell, just driving around the shop lot at work to possition for load it will constantly bounce around from 2-3 different gears. Where as with a truck with a normal manual EF box, you would make a couple gear changes to maybe 3rd gear and not change again unless stopping or pulling out of the lot.

  • @TestECull
    @TestECull 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am going to make a minor correction to your last nomination: It was not the transmission itself that caused the problem, rather, the shift mechanism used in the cabins that did not firmly lock into P. The fix was a different gate on the column shifter that would prevent it from randomly dropping out of Park. The C4 is one of the best automatic transmissions Detroit has ever produced, they just gave it a crappy PRNDL and that PRNDL caused runaways.
    You also completely ignored the UltraDrive Automatics that Chrysler put in pretty much anything with a V6 from the late 80s until the mid 2000s which were just terrible in general. They didn't have any spectacular failures, rather, their lifespan was about half as long as it should have been.

    The Xterra/Pathfinder/Frontier 5speed automatic is actually a really good transmission. The problem is actually a flaw in the transmission cooler inside the radiator, not an issue with the transmission itself. The tubing inside the radiator for the transmission cooler is prone to cracking and when this happens it mixes coolant into the transmission fluid which in turn destroys the transmission. The cooler in the radiator can be bypassed and avoid this problem, and there is also a revised radiator that was put into later models.

    I own a 2013 Mustang GT and had the same problems as mentioned. It was mostly going into 4th gear at high RPMS. Happened at least once a week. and sometimes going into 5th at low RPMS was tricky. It was an easy fix. the factory flimsy clutch line expands and contracts in the heat restricting fluid, thus locking you out. McLeod makes a steel braided line to replace it and all problems have been solved. not a single issue since installed about 8 months ago!!!

    Front Diff in the CX-9. partial voluntary recall. Coolant leak, drains, blows up on the side of the road. I don't think it killed anyone, but it's one reason why the new CX-9 drivetrain doesn't share a single part with the old one.

    The problem with the Jeep fault isn't just the way it returns to the original position. With a BMW, if you leave the gear in a slot outside of park, take off your seatbelt, and open the driver's door, the car chimes at you AND goes to park automatically.

    That ZF 8 speed is actually quite good, it's the selector that sucks. Also, the problem was not neutral, but reverse being selected instead of park. I've done it myself, but I can only blame myself because we should All be looking at the indicator when we park regardless of what kind of gear shifter we have. I don't defend this shifter at all, just making a point that most of us have forgotten how to do this because we rely on muscle memory to put it into park.

  • @Patchuchan
    @Patchuchan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually several manufactures who used the ZF9 have issued a recall.
    Even when the ergonomics are right it's still prone to random failures as the problem is they're shift by wire.

  • @wazlamish113
    @wazlamish113 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good one on the Xterra/Pathfinder. it wasn't actually a problem with the transmission but rather the radiator. it shared a line with the transmission oil to help cool the oil under load. The type of oil was corrosive to the metal in the radiator and would eventually eat through the lines and mix with coolant. There is an easy fix for the issue by simply bypassing the radiator and adding a small separate transmission cooler. Cost about 75 to do it yourself and completely eliminates the possibility of the issue. However it is shifty that it's such a well known issue and Nissan really didn't take care of customers that it happened to.

  • @tf5969
    @tf5969 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just rebuilt the transmission on my 2006 Xterra because it had this issue. It's not actually the trans that is at fault but the very cheap trans cooler integrated into the radiator. Like the Pinto, the Xterra has lot of issues. Most Nissan trucks and truck based vehicles of this vintage develop a problem with the emission controls and start reporting engine codes for malfunctioning O2 sensors that are not actually bad. They also had defective fuel systems from the factory. I had to replace the fuel pump, fuel gauge, and gauge sending unit 3 times in the first year.

  • @lukesdoings7150

    I have read on different Mustang forums that the biggest problem with the MT82 Mustang trans, is the shifter. Once they replaced it with a Barton or Hurst it took away most of the problem. But I don't know first hand.
