What a great sermon! This was funny but informative. Convicting but comforting. My goal when starting 2024 was to truly understand revelation. I’ve been going through it very slowly since Jan 1st. Maybe 5-10 verses per day and reading commentaries. I just finished chapter 17 this morning and then I found this. So excited to watch this whole series!!

Pastor Matt, love this series. I do have a question as I look to scripture that perhaps you can help me with. In your sermon, you note there were doubters during the ascension of Christ into the sky. I know the Bible says there were doubters on his resurrection, but I haven't found the scripture as to the doubters who witnessed Christ ascending to the sky. He started off good, but his understanding of the dating of the book is off. Kenneth Gentry wrote the only book in the world specifically on the dating where he gives the full nine yards of both sides as to when it was written. It was written in the 60’s. The late date evidence falls apart when carefully examined. This changes a lot of things.
I agree with the earlier dating like you. Another huge "game changer" is understanding the Greek word ge. It means soil, ground, land, earth not global or planet earth. If God meant global earth He would of used kosmos. So when we read 1/4 or 1/3 of the earth being destroyed we can know it isn't global earth but it is referring to the land of Israel. Then the Book of Revelation begins to make sense.

I love Matt Chandler, and I was actually saved at His Church. However, this is what happens when someone tries to spiritualize some of the Book of Revelation away. The Book of Revelation isn't going anywhere, and there will be a final antichrist and final mark of the beast in the future. It's dangerous to allegorize all of the clear teachings of the Book of Revelation. There were some prophetic shadows in Revelation for the generation of that day, but the final fulfillment comes way in the future no doubt about it. However, Daniels 70th week must be fulfilled. And the Third Jewish Temple must be built. Best to stick with a Biblical Teaching on the Book of Revelation, someone like John Macarthur properly teaches eschatology well. It's best for the Body of Christ to be prepared for what is coming, during the final years, and during the tribulation.

You are right. This book is not for courage for the Christian but signposts for Israel and all left behind. When you see the abomination of desolation... run. Don't even get your coat. Other prophecies throughout scriptures confirm that Revelation is still unfulfilled. I am afraid Matt has been led astray by amillenialism. Sad. A teacher has a high responsibility, and furthermore teaching Revelation erroneously carries a grave warning. Praying for Matt for eyes to see.
You are 100% correct. He makes a hermeneutical error early on when he says "It cannot mean to us, what it did not mean to them". He goes on to call Christians tricked by cheesy movies (implying Left Behind and others)... oh well. Some people proof text
I appreciate your heart and passion. I’m confused by your invitation. I need to “repent of my sins and surrender to Jesus” in order to be in the part of the story you’re talking about. I’m not sure what that means. It’s an extremely vague, nebulous statement. I can’t pick a verse that comes from. I don’t understand the transaction that’s supposed to take place. Overall I don’t believe anyone could be born again by hearing that plea at all.

@@joshuabaker1631 check out Luke 9:23-25. Denying ourselves and taking up the cross is complete surrender to Jesus. He says in order to be His disciples, we must deny ourselves. The Holy Spirit will give you the understanding you seek. Ask Him for discernment and clarity and meditate on those verses. You must surrender in order to be His disciple- aka a follower of Christ.

My question remains though - why use words and phrases that Jesus didn’t use and which I just interpret from his other words? Or, is it possible that one can be a believer and not a disciple, or a disciple and not born again?
@@joshuabaker1631 I appreciate the dialogue. James 1:22 is another verse that talks about surrender. Matthew 6:33 is another. True that the word “surrender” isn’t used in the passages I’ve referenced. However, “surrender” is the meaning of these verses. If we look at synonyms for the word surrender, “submit” is a synonym. James 4:7-8 talks about submitting ourselves fully to God. The problem is we can pick certain verses while excluding others and make them mean something they don’t. While it’s true we must believe according to John 3:16, 1:John 1:9 also tells us to confess while James 2:19 tells us that even the demons believe there is one God and shudder. Cross references are helpful and word studies- even just looking at a dictionary to simplify and not overanalyze is helpful.
The revelation of Jesus Christ... STOP. Revelation exists. period. Jesus reveals and orders his churches through revelation. HOW DO I KNOW? Because the entire bible, including this book, demonstrate and tell of it.
The 7 letters that were written by John to the 7 churches in Asia Minor known as Turkey today contexualize itself!..The beginning of Rev.states that the things written in the letters SYMBOLIZE or SIGNIFY something..A key to understanding the letters. Another Key to keep in mind is the letters were written to the 7 churches NOT to YOU or I & were things which were shortly to take place in THEIR LIFES..Youre reading someone else's mail! It should be noted that in Matthew 24:30 Jesus is clearly drawing on Daniel 7:13-14 and the promise of the coming of the Son of Man on the clouds of heaven. What cannot be missed is that the vision of Daniel 7, no matter what else we might think, is restricted to the days of the Roman empire. Daniel saw four beasts, and the fourth beast, the sea beast, is none other than Rome. So, Daniel 7 predicted the coming of the Son of Man on the clouds of heaven. Jesus cites Daniel 7 in Matthew 24. Daniel 7 cannot extend beyond the days of the Roman empire, and Jesus confirmed that restriction when he said that his coming would be in the first century generation (Matthew 24:34). The point is that when Jesus said he was coming on the clouds, this was a claim to Deity. It is one of the reasons why the Sanhedrin “came un-glued” when Jesus said THEY would see him coming on the clouds (Matthew 26:64). Jesus & John confirm this is Revelation as well.. Revelation places the final judgment where? The LAND! REV.1:7! AND UPON THE TRIBES OF THAT LAND! OLD COVENANT ISRAEL..NOT US! So hes teaching the book because he has a revelation in his heart of where the church is going.... But we shouldn't base our sermons on revelation or fitting circumstances for the word to be applied..but if we see something in our "minds eye".. thats more acceptable than hearing the voice of god or receiving Spiritual revelation by the Holy Spirit ...??

A little too much mocking for me, is this an attempt to be culturally relevant? Granted, I’ve only watched the 1st lesson, and I will continue. But mocking people who are frustrated about people moving to Texas and then voting in favor of policies they left behind leaves me with a sour note. Cant we love God and the lost and also express political opposition? Don’t we want Texas to remain pro-life? For instance, the Churches of Asia Minor would know the "seven heads" of Rome point to the seven distinctive hills that surround Rome and the 10 crowns point to the 10 provincial governors of Rome. Pastor Chuck Baldwin has a three hour sermon that gives a great history to all of this that is available on TH-cam. Go to verse 18. John writes, "18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast..." John tells you that you should know who this beast is if you are wise enough to calculate six hundred and sixty six. Gematria is the the numbers puzzle game used that translates it to Nero. His face was on the coin, and to engage in commerce you had to use Nero's coin. Go back to verse 5 in Revelation 13, "And there was given unto him a mouth, speaking great things and blasphemies, and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months." Nero falsely accused Christians of setting fires in Rome. His persecution of Christians lasted 42 months, (3.5 years) until he committed suicide. In the second half of Revelation, John writes about the land beast. This is organized religion and false prophets. He is referring to the Jewish high priests, who feared for their positions, who continued to enable Nero during the last 42 months of his reign until his death.
Chandlers great but not a prophetic bone in him. Of course the word of God can speak to us in a different and morw full way. Revelation means a curtain being lifted and more being revealed as time goes on.

This is everything that is wrong with the American suburban church. Apologizing for reading Revelation, blabbing on for ten minutes about Eugene Peterson who is a heretic author who takes the Word out of context, a woman in skin tight jeans reading the Word, and acting like Revelation is a walk in the park. The American suburban church would rather be entertained with coffee and cookies, rather than understand that we have it too good, ignoring our Third World brothers and sisters who are persecuted daily, flogged, jailed and martyred for their faith. Persecution is coming to America. This pastor just wants to sugar coat it.
Bro did you listen to the entire sermon? It's nothing at all like you describe. Is TVC technically a suburban American church? Sure. But Matt Chandler is actively pushing back against the "megachurch" culture of today. He is very aware of the persecution across the world and how numb the Western church has become to the weight of the gospel (I mean, he literally talks about this around the 30:00 minute mark!) Give him a real listen and you'll see that 🙌🏻 I personally think God has really blessed Matt with both a robust, Biblical theology AND a huge reach beyond the walls of his building in Dallas. Praise God for that!

My goal when starting 2024 was to truly understand revelation. I’ve been going through it very slowly since Jan 1st. Maybe 5-10 verses per day and reading commentaries. I just finished chapter 17 this morning and then I found this. So excited to watch this whole series!!

Pastor Matt, love this series. I do have a question as I look to scripture that perhaps you can help me with. In your sermon, you note there were doubters during the ascension of Christ into the sky. I know the Bible says there were doubters on his resurrection, but I haven't found the scripture as to the doubters who witnessed Christ ascending to the sky. I don’t like when people preach revelations without exposing other biblical views. The majority of the Church through the centuries believed the letter was written in 68 AD because they saw parts of revelations already fulfilled

He started off good, but his understanding of the dating of the book is off. Kenneth Gentry wrote the only book in the world specifically on the dating where he gives the full nine yards of both sides as to when it was written. It was written in the 60’s. The late date evidence falls apart when carefully examined. This changes a lot of things.
I agree with the earlier dating like you. Another huge "game changer" is understanding the Greek word ge. It means soil, ground, land, earth not global or planet earth. If God meant global earth He would of used kosmos. So when we read 1/4 or 1/3 of the earth being destroyed we can know it isn't global earth but it is referring to the land of Israel. Then the Book of Revelation begins to make sense.

I love Matt Chandler, and I was actually saved at His Church.
However, this is what happens when someone tries to spiritualize some of the Book of Revelation away. The Book of Revelation isn't going anywhere, and there will be a final antichrist and final mark of the beast in the future. It's dangerous to allegorize all of the clear teachings of the Book of Revelation.
There were some prophetic shadows in Revelation for the generation of that day, but the final fulfillment comes way in the future no doubt about it. However, Daniels 70th week must be fulfilled. And the Third Jewish Temple must be built.
Best to stick with a Biblical Teaching on the Book of Revelation, someone like John Macarthur properly teaches eschatology well.
It's best for the Body of Christ to be prepared for what is coming, during the final years, and during the tribulation.

You are right. This book is not for courage for the Christian but signposts for Israel and all left behind. When you see the abomination of desolation... run. Don't even get your coat. Other prophecies throughout scriptures confirm that Revelation is still unfulfilled. I am afraid Matt has been led astray by amillenialism. Sad. A teacher has a high responsibility, and furthermore teaching Revelation erroneously carries a grave warning. Praying for Matt for eyes to see.
You are 100% correct. He makes a hermeneutical error early on when he says "It cannot mean to us, what it did not mean to them". He goes on to call Christians tricked by cheesy movies (implying Left Behind and others)... oh well. Some people proof text
I appreciate your heart and passion. I’m confused by your invitation. I need to “repent of my sins and surrender to Jesus” in order to be in the part of the story you’re talking about. I’m not sure what that means. It’s an extremely vague, nebulous statement. I can’t pick a verse that comes from. I don’t understand the transaction that’s supposed to take place. Overall I don’t believe anyone could be born again by hearing that plea at all.

@@joshuabaker1631 check out Luke 9:23-25. Denying ourselves and taking up the cross is complete surrender to Jesus. He says in order to be His disciples, we must deny ourselves. The Holy Spirit will give you the understanding you seek. Ask Him for discernment and clarity and meditate on those verses. You must surrender in order to be His disciple- aka a follower of Christ.

@@joshuabaker1631 I appreciate the dialogue. James 1:22 is another verse that talks about surrender. Matthew 6:33 is another. True that the word “surrender” isn’t used in the passages I’ve referenced. However, “surrender” is the meaning of these verses. If we look at synonyms for the word surrender, “submit” is a synonym. James 4:7-8 talks about submitting ourselves fully to God. The problem is we can pick certain verses while excluding others and make them mean something they don’t. While it’s true we must believe according to John 3:16, 1:John 1:9 also tells us to confess while James 2:19 tells us that even the demons believe there is one God and shudder. Cross references are helpful and word studies- even just looking at a dictionary to simplify and not overanalyze is helpful.

The revelation of Jesus Christ... STOP. Revelation exists. period. Jesus reveals and orders his churches through revelation. HOW DO I KNOW? Because the entire bible, including this book, demonstrate and tell of it.
The 7 letters that were written by John to the 7 churches in Asia Minor known as Turkey today contexualize itself!..The beginning of Rev.states that the things written in the letters SYMBOLIZE or SIGNIFY something..A key to understanding the letters.
Another Key to keep in mind is the letters were written to the 7 churches NOT to YOU or I & were things which were shortly to take place in THEIR LIFES..Youre reading someone else's mail!
It should be noted that in Matthew 24:30 Jesus is clearly drawing on Daniel 7:13-14 and the promise of the coming of the Son of Man on the clouds of heaven. What cannot be missed is that the vision of Daniel 7, no matter what else we might think, is restricted to the days of the Roman empire.
Daniel saw four beasts, and the fourth beast, the sea beast, is none other than Rome. So, Daniel 7 predicted the coming of the Son of Man on the clouds of heaven. Jesus cites Daniel 7 in Matthew 24.
Daniel 7 cannot extend beyond the days of the Roman empire, and Jesus confirmed that restriction when he said that his coming would be in the first century generation (Matthew 24:34).
The point is that when Jesus said he was coming on the clouds, this was a claim to Deity. It is one of the reasons why the Sanhedrin “came un-glued” when Jesus said THEY would see him coming on the clouds (Matthew 26:64).

A little too much mocking for me, is this an attempt to be culturally relevant? Granted, I’ve only watched the 1st lesson, and I will continue. But mocking people who are frustrated about people moving to Texas and then voting in favor of policies they left behind leaves me with a sour note. Cant we love God and the lost and also express political opposition? Don’t we want Texas to remain pro-life? For instance, the Churches of Asia Minor would know the "seven heads" of Rome point to the seven distinctive hills that surround Rome and the 10 crowns point to the 10 provincial governors of Rome. Pastor Chuck Baldwin has a three hour sermon that gives a great history to all of this that is available on TH-cam.
Go to verse 18. John writes, "18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast..."
John tells you that you should know who this beast is if you are wise enough to calculate six hundred and sixty six.
Gematria is the the numbers puzzle game used that translates it to Nero. His face was on the coin, and to engage in commerce you had to use Nero's coin.
Go back to verse 5 in Revelation 13, "And there was given unto him a mouth, speaking great things and blasphemies, and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months."
Nero falsely accused Christians of setting fires in Rome. His persecution of Christians lasted 42 months, (3.5 years) until he committed suicide.
In the second half of Revelation, John writes about the land beast. This is organized religion and false prophets. He is referring to the Jewish high priests, who feared for their positions, who continued to enable Nero during the last 42 months of his reign until his death.

This is everything that is wrong with the American suburban church. Apologizing for reading Revelation, blabbing on for ten minutes about Eugene Peterson who is a heretic author who takes the Word out of context, a woman in skin tight jeans reading the Word, and acting like Revelation is a walk in the park. The American suburban church would rather be entertained with coffee and cookies, rather than understand that we have it too good, ignoring our Third World brothers and sisters who are persecuted daily, flogged, jailed and martyred for their faith. Persecution is coming to America. This pastor just wants to sugar coat it.
Bro did you listen to the entire sermon? It's nothing at all like you describe. Is TVC technically a suburban American church? Sure. But Matt Chandler is actively pushing back against the "megachurch" culture of today. He is very aware of the persecution across the world and how numb the Western church has become to the weight of the gospel (I mean, he literally talks about this around the 30:00 minute mark!) Give him a real listen and you'll see that 🙌🏻 I personally think God has really blessed Matt with both a robust, Biblical theology AND a huge reach beyond the walls of his building in Dallas. Praise God for that!
