    The quality of this presentation "forced" me to subscribe.
    The flight crew, and ATC, produced an almost 'divine' cooperation between each other. The apparent 'knowledge of aircraft's systems, navigation, and landing procedures - which needed to be utilized
    I was an industrial engineer for Boeing, charged with avionics support, during the design, implementation, roll-out, and post delivery (first 100 deliveries) phases of the 777; for these reasons, I know the 777's avionics systems fairly well. With that said, today, and through this video, I've gotten my 'long awaited' confirmation, that the build process, and operational manuals, spelled-out procedures which were 'easily understood', and allowed the flight crew to execute/apply, and transform those written procedures into the physical operation of the aircraft.
    FOR MYSELF, AND OTHERS, WE'VE RECEIVED THE "SPIRITUAL" PAYOUT - SOME TWENTY FIVE YEARS POST INCEPTION.

      Do you think an emergency should have been declared? It seems a good deal of fuel could have been saved. A PAN call may have made the controller fully aware of the gravity of the situation sooner. This started to remind me of the Avianca crash.
      I'm not concerned about the dollar of fuel saved, but fuel saving in terms of remaining options

      @@slartybarfastb3648 Hi, As far as I can tell from the audio, they had about 15000 Lbs of fuel left. I'm not a pilot so I cannot translate how fuel critical he was. The weather was improving fairly quickly at his first alternate, EWR. The controller gave the pilot all his options. In this case, if the pilot didn't declare a minimum fuel emergency, the controller wouldn't either. I hope that helps answer your question.

    • @uk7153
      @uk7153 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      mo kadir ILS is used in most airports for landing which is an automated landing system which relies on multiple instruments to keep it on course. Since they had those specific guidance instruments fail, they had to do an alternate VNAV approach (which all pilots are trained well for) but the only issue with that was, there was a low ceiling of cloud cover, so they could not do a long approach in such a low ceiling as it requires visual confirmation of airway on approach, otherwise landing has to be aborted and a go around is done as per procedure.

    • @ronsta11
      @ronsta11 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hey it is not about Air India flying like one of the state transport buses. These things happen to almost every airline. And generally pilots are trained for such emergencies. My point here is despite the negativity at their workplace, zero goodwill and acceptance of the company these pilots work for, they display exceptional skill by remaining calm when almost all of the systems they need to rely on for a safe landing packed up. As far as I know, all airplanes are maintained to a certain level, especially the critical instruments inside the cockpit. Saving Air India is something I still wonder how they would plan it in the midst of bureaucracy, political influence and everything under the sun you could think of that could stop something happening in India. It is better they shut down the company and sell it crap for scrap

    Maybe its just me but i picked up a distinct change in tone in the pilot's voice when asked about the number of people onboard. Calm as he was, in that moment, the possibility of the plane being potentially in mortal peril seemed to cross his mind. And the next instant he was back to being chill and pro. Love the human spirit on display here against the backdrop of planes and aviation 👍

      @davidswelt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Plenty of misinformation there. Autoland is not the same as flying a coupled approach (autopilot flying the, e.g., ILS). It's possible that their standard operating procedure mandates autoland or certain features for certain weather, but what they allude to is that they either lost the glideslope, at which point they would have reverted to a localizer-only approach (higher minimums), or, if you take literally what they said, they actually lost the localizer, which would indeed cause any correctly trained pilot to go missed. They're very clear that they could not fly an ILS approach (even CAT I). They ended up flying an approach to Newark with non-WAAS (not quite so precise) GPS (or generally, RNAV) equipment where they'd get nothing but an advisory glideslope and higher minimums, which is why they needed better weather. If this sounds complicated then that's because it is, and that's why training to fly in the instrument flight rules "system" (and becoming an ATP, let alone get a job to fly big iron across the ocean) takes much time, experience, and talent. These guys were very far from "not being able to hand-fly an approach", and they probably have been dealing safely with older navaids across India for years.

But it is not 'bravery' to save yourself. Sorry, not to denigrate his skills, but shouting hero at every pilot who lands a plane in an emergency is a pet peeve. Firemen who enter burning buildings are heroes, soldiers or police who sacrifice their own safety to protect others are heroes. Not pilots doing their job in a stressful situation.

    It's a great lesson for all pilots: ATC will always be doing their best to help when you need it most, but they cannot be expected to analyze the situation as the pilots can, being each and every aircraft has different systems, backup systems and capabilities. The take-away here is to tell ATC 1). What the problem is you are facing - the general nature of the emergency. 2)What you need to ensure the safety of the aircraft - ie. An RNAV/GPS approach. and 3) Your intentions.
    Thanks so much for posting this, and kudos to all involved in resolving the problems safely. It's not easy with 370 souls strapped to your back, at 300mph, in a 650,000lb aircraft that turns into a glider in the next 20min.

    After doing some calculations, 7,200 kg of fuel translates to approximately 1hr of fuel for a Boeing 777. Thank goodness for the regulation that all flights carry enough fuel to make it not only to the destination, but also to the alternate airport and then some. Thank you for taking the time to put this audio together.

    Is it just me or did ATC seem a bit slow at understanding the situation?
    The plane was low on fuel and had instrument failure but they didn't seem to understand what the pilot wanted.
    He was asking for an airport that had a high cloud ceiling so he could see the runway on approach and fly the plane manually,
    not come through the cloud then find he didn't have time to make corrections and fly straight into the ground.
    I think the pilot was much calmer than I would have been, I would not want to keep repeating myself in that situation.

    • @markdoldon8852
      @markdoldon8852 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the ATC had some In kling that they needed a higher ceiling, but either he never understood why or he forgot because he clearly thought they were doing an ILS approach to Newark.
