I've finally bought the expensive OEM version of this switch. After replacing the 30 dollar ones once a year. Hopefully it lasts as long as the original part did. I go back to this video every time. This has been a life saver everyone every time. Thank you! I had different ignition switch issues, where first my cruise control would stop working, then my auto headlight function was lost, then my temperature control unit stopped working and then finally my ABS light and trac control light would come on. Found out they all ran through the ignition switch. The cheap ones make poor contact after a short period, but every time I replaced the switch got full functionality back and it ran great until about a year later. One switch actually broke a plastic party inside (thankfully while parked) and would spring the key back to the off position... which could've been deadly while driving. Anyway thought I'd write what issues I had in case others are looking for a solution short term so far but hoping oem is long term.
My Alero, which became Dad's Alero, which became my nephews Alero, and which is mine again is attempting to start RIGHT as you turn the key on. So the part the cylinder slides into is the culprit. It's been a pita for a few years with this issue - my only finding this now. Can NOT thank you enough. Seriously.
Bryan, you have made my day, week, month, maybe even year with this video. My elderly dad gave me his 2003 Alero V6, in mint condition and 90k miles, but I was afraid to drive anymore because it would leave me stranded, no cranking, no lights on the dash, no security light flashing or on. I had heard that special tools were needed to replace the ignition switch on the Alero, you my genius friend proved the experts wrong. If you're ever in Northern California I'll buy you a beer, or two or ????! Thanks again!
RoadRageRaul Congrats, I just sold off my Alero, it was rusting out thanks to all the road salt spread out in winter. It had 170k miles and was starting to consume oil and trans fuild and the interior was really starting to fall apart. I wish I had the money and space to restore it. I still think it was one of the better cars I owned.
Well at least I found one video that someone said 2000 Oldsmobile Alero everything out for this car is a 2001 or 98 or an Impala or a Grand Am and it just goes on and on and on besides a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero which I'm sort of having the same problem you're having but my issue is it cranks but security light stays solid and it runs for about a minute and a half and shuts off and I change the all the crankshaft positioning sensors the camshaft sensor this car has two crankshaft position sensors fuel pump fuel filter fuel pressure regulator new belt new wires and getting 50 lb pressure .?????? So it's either a bypass security or the faulty ignition switch itself because all the resets are for blinking security light this don't work I don't know what the freak I'm going to do
By the way everyone...I had to "reset" or "reprogram" my key for the ignition. I have a 2003 model. My husband's friend works @ Napa, and if he wouldn't have told us how to do this, it would have cost us $170. If you install the ignition switch and your car still doesn't start, you have to do the following: Turn your key to the "on" position. Leave it for EXACTLY 10 minutes, turn it off for EXACTLY 2 seconds, on for EXACTLY 10 minutes, off for EXACTLY 2 seconds, and on for EXACTLY 10 minutes.
After swapping out the switch, the security light stayed flashing for (?) Minutes. Then turned it off, waited a couple seconds and moved it back to "on" where it just started trying to crank itself. Hhhh.
I'll have to give this a go. My '04 Alero has been having intermittent problems starting (no dash lights, wipers/headlamps work) and shut off a couple times while driving and today I couldn't get it going at all. So today I'm replacing my ignition switch and you may make my day.
I have a 1998 Intrigue that went insane. Gages went on and off, brake light never turned off, light flashing, warning beeps beeping. Then it would start. Looked it up and found the likely problem was the ignition switch, but how to change it?? Bought a new switch, went online and lo and behold, there you were. Now, the Alero is not an Intrigue, but the year was close and the system is similar. I followed your moves, got the old one out, though I had to cut through where there was plastic barriers that served no real purpose. Messy and awkward, but: Just started it up! Couldn't have done it without your help! Thanks BuckeyeBrran (Ohio State is my alma mater, btw)
Great video. Just an FYI for those out there with Alero's having problems with the instrument cluster/air conditioner/power windows that shut down off an on--replacing the ignition switch may be a solution. That was the problem I was having before changing out the ignition switch. So far, it has fixed the problem. Hardest part for me was getting the ETS and the trip buttons to disconnect. Everything else went fairly smoothly. Thanks again for posting this video.
I have the same problem and no mechanic can find anything. Now I found out about this and I ordered a new ignition switch from the USA. Let's see if it solves the problem for me. I am so excited about this, because it is so annoying with the air conditioning not working right away. Thank you for verifying the solution.
Well you were correct again. I punched out the cylinder and was then able to release the cable and the 3wire plug. Now it's off to buy a new ignition. Just so you know, I looked high and low and could not find any other videos that covered this project. Thank you so much, you saved me a bunch of money. Good Work.
i did it in 30 min ....man thank u cause the lock smith tried to tax me 145.oo junk yard 85.00 did the job myself $34.00 a great used ignition and it work perfect till this day... thanks my dude
Wow so much work,my 98 olds is having a steering wheel lock issue and was told about that white cable unlocks everything. Didn't realize the whole car comes apart.
Thanks for the advice! This video helped a lot!!! Not being a mechanic and all, it took us about 2 hours to dismantle & replace, then 10 minutes to put back together.
i love the internet. thanks bro i needed this for some trouble shooting and the comments here made me sure this is my problem. thanks for the video and everyone thanks for the comments
Thank you for the helpful video. I had to replace an ignition switch on my wife's Alero, and I followed your instructions and breezed through it. I would have never been able to do it on my own. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for this video. It made it really easy to get in there and replace the ignition lock cylinder, which I had to replace because of a faulty Passlock sensor. I had to reset that thing about 5 times in the past 5 weeks, kinda got tired of it and just went ahead and replaced it.
Great video man, I had to have this done and the dealer charged me $900! It was a ridiculous price, and then it broke again. Luckily it was under warranty. Too bad this video wasn't out at the time, I could have just replaced it myself.
many thanks! this worked!. i have a 99 Alero. although it seems alittle temperamental when i try to start it now. sometimes i go to start it and power cuts out almost immediately. then i can't get any power to anything. i have to disconnect and reconnect the batter to get it to start again.
Great video, helped me replace my ignition switch on my '02 Intrigue. Going by the printout was near impossible, but this really helped visualize the process. Thanks a lot.
No I don't regret buying it, it's been the best car I've owned. I bought it with only 248 miles on the odometer. I've owned a Toyota Corolla and a Honda Civic before the Olds. And I've had less trouble with the Alero than compared to the Corolla or Civic. The Corolla was rusting out, the cooling system was always acting up, the Civic burned through exhaust, brakes and tires like they were going out of style and I had to replace the head gasket.
Our 2001 Alero had an issue with the instrument cluster not lighting up, the radio not coming on and windows not working for a bit after the car was started. Traced issue back to the ignition switch. The worst part is getting that cluster out of the way. It needs to come out at an angle (with the face of the cluster facing the sky) through the right side of the opening after you manage to get the harness disconnected. Thanks for the Video.
Getting ready to put in the fourth Ignition Switch in my '01 Alero... AC Delco replacement each time... I will say that this last one has made it four years (the most out of any of them) before finally screwing up. Of course I only used one key this time around... hid the second key so my wife or I wouldn't grab it...
@aricpelt I bought my Alero new with only 248 miles on it. It just past 120000 miles, this is the first time the switch was replaced. Sorry to hear you've had so much trouble with your car. I would guess either you or your wife have a lot of keys or other things on your key rings. I know a lot of people talk crap about the Alero but in my experience the Alero has been the best car I've owned. Hopefully the 4th time will be the charm. :)
It's easy really, you have to remove the gear shift handle and pull out the center panel. Then you carefully pry out on the upper cover with the HVAC and radio. It just clips in and out, but be careful to not crack it near where the radio is. The radio is held in by 4 screws, you can get a adapter to fit your aftermarket radio, it's pretty much just a universal adapter for gm vehicles. Most places will have it, try crutchfield if you can't find it.
Help! I changed my ignition switch and it has a gritty hard turn and now doesn't return from the "start" position to the "ON" position on its own. So I changed the switch again, thinking it was defective but its still doing this. It works fine for the first day but gets gritty by the next day. What can I do to fix this?
QUESTION: I have 1998 INTRIGUE... and it is dead in a parking lot now. Need to replace the ignition switch. Think this is similar to the Alero? Great video. Hoping your skills and teaching will save me some money.
I'm not sure if I understand you, The car doesn't have to start you just turn the key so it's in the "ON" position and push the button on the key cylinder and pull it out. If the key won't turn at all, I don't know if it would be a problem with the cylinder or the switch. You may have to try to cut the cylinder out somehow. Hope that helps.
liked your video , the problem im having is that my key would not work ,got everything except that the cylinder would not come out..frustrated i pryed the switch apart just to unlock the tranny.,so i could push the car back into parked position an out of the middle of lot,i would appreciate any ideas as to how i would be able to pull it out and not cut wires that go to cylinder..
You could try turning the key to the ON position for 10 min, then turn back to off and try to start it. It may be a bad sensor or other part. Google or Bing "alero security light stays on" and you'll find several links to help you. It's a very common problem with GM cars. Good luck.
I have a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue and followed your video and it worked perfect except for one small problem. I am replacing the ignition because it wont turn on. So I cannot release the cable with the key in the 4 oclock spot cause it wont turn on so how can i get arount that?
Hi Bryan, did you have to get new keys when you did this repair? I want to change the ignition cylinder in my car (I already did the security bypass). I'm just wondering how the original key will work with the new cylinder (or not). Thanks.
hi I have a question. I have a 1998 oldsmobile intrigue and my car had an engine swap and ever since my car only has 3rd gear unless I manually shift and even then it only has 2nd and 3rd. Had it looked at by AAMCO and they couldn't find an obvious issue. Auto zone pulled about 4 malfunction codes for the shift solenoids and transmission. After googling them together I found a link that said it can be caused by a faulty ignition switch which then causes the transmission to default to 3rd gear. Has anyone else had this problem and it be fixed by replacing the ignition switch?
very very very important on 12:37 of video those two wires the BLACK AND YELLOW WIRES are the main power or signal to ignition switch .you must connect them back to the switch or you will have nothing ....no power to the switch believe me i found out the hard way . THANKs to the video i seen them .that plug will get lost behind the dash .
To be fair, wheel hubs, struts and springs are normal wear and tear, maintenance items. All cars eventually need to replace them. Head gasket not so much, I'm guessing you had the 2.4L 4 cylinder. If it blew twice I'd think it was either a really cheap replacement gasket, wasn't installed properly or the head was warped.
After installing the new ignition switch cylinder, reinstall all the components to the original preset, when you try to start your car it may not start due to a security feature. On most GM cars you must turn ignition key to one cycle or the on position and wait 10 minutes until the flashing security light turns off. When the light turns off you must shut the car off then start the car, it should be working. keep in mind while the security light is flashing your car will not start, the radio and all the electrical components will be operating but you will not be able to turn the car over until you do the following: above. Keep in mind that your car will be on battery so make sure all lights are off and the radio is off because if your car battery dies while the security feature is resetting you will have to do it over.
I cut the wall out beside the radio and pulled the switch through the radio opening, it sucks and still not fixed lol. Bought a dorman switch and was broke out the box. But mine is an olds intrigue
turn the ignition to the "ON" position (without trying to start the car) and leave it for 10min, after that turn the ignition "OFF" for 10 seconds, repeat the process 2 more times. It should take 30min to complete. It should turn off the security light and the car should start.
The 12 years that I've owned the Alero it went to the dealership 1 once under warranty for the turn signal switch, which was a recall item anyway and would have been fixed for free. I decided to replace the LIM gasket as a precaution, The front driver spring broke and the starter died, both of which I consider maintenance items. I think most people have trouble with cars like the Alero because kids bought them and abused them and didn't maintain them correctly.
I checked autozone.com and it looks like the Intrigue uses the same part# ignition switch as the Alero, so I would guess it installs pretty much the same way.
The key needs to be in the cylinder in the "ON" position and you have to push a button on the underside of the switch at about the 4 o'clock, with a small screw driver. then you just need to wiggle the cylinder out. If that doesn't work I don't know how to remove it.
Strong car I need it I need a pretty good is Sharon Carr I want to put it in the ignition in a possible Integra 2001 Oldsmobile I want to put the ignition can you play a video to
For some reason I'm not able to get the ignition switch cable to lock back into place. I have the key in the on position but when I turn it off the cable just slides right back out. Anyone have any tips for getting it back in?
At this point it's been about 2 years since I did this. I don't remember having any issues with reinstalling the cable. Just be sure that the cable is fully inserted in the switch. The black square piece on the cable has to fit inside the switch. I haven't had anyone else comment with a similar issue and I haven't seen this before. Try leaving asking on aleromod.com if you can't figure it out.
There is a thing you have to press when you pull the cable out.Make sure you push it down and it locks in place try to pull the cable out if it comes out then its not locked in place. It should catch and not come out!I am having trouble getting the ignition to slide out can't get the plugin out
"sometimes" the fuel pump can do the same thing you described! running on low fuel allot or just fuel filter and whole system just sludged up! don't always have to pay the dealer $95 dollars to do a diagnostic charge is all im getting @. try lightly tapping the fuel tank just to see if you can spark up the fuel pump for a longer run atleast you can rule it out before taking it in...
i have a 2000 oldsmobile alero and it has all the same symptoms as the ones on the video and i change the ignition switch and the car still will not start can anyone help me out ?
Try this. Turn your key to the "on" position. Leave it for EXACTLY 10 minutes, turn it off for EXACTLY 2 seconds, on for EXACTLY 10 minutes, off for EXACTLY 2 seconds, and on for EXACTLY 10 minutes.
I meant that the key wont turn. It will go into the cylinder but will not turn, that was my problem to begin with. As a result, I'm not able to release the cable or the two wire conection. guess i'm going to have to call a lock smith.
I've finally bought the expensive OEM version of this switch. After replacing the 30 dollar ones once a year. Hopefully it lasts as long as the original part did. I go back to this video every time. This has been a life saver everyone

Thank you for posting this. I changed my ignition switch on a '98 Intrigue; your tips on removing the key set at about 12:00 were extremely helpful!

Great Video I love how you realized you had swapped the switches at the end
Great job on explaining disconnecting wires from ignition. Thank you.
This was same ignition for a 2003 Chevy Malibu. HUGE help!
Thank you for the helpful video. I had to replace an ignition switch on my wife's Alero, and I followed your instructions and breezed through it. I would have never been able to do it on my own. Keep up the great work!
To much unnecessary talking then getting to the point of how to remove, install.

you didnt show how 2 remove radio and staple on gear shift, other than that good job and thankx for posting, world needs people like you.
Saved me at least 2 hours of angry searching. Thanks man

many thanks! this worked!. i have a 99 Alero. although it seems alittle temperamental when i try to start it now. sometimes i go to start it and power cuts out almost immediately. then i can't get any power to anything. i have to disconnect and reconnect the batter to get it to start again.
having this symptom and this comment made me sure that this is my problem. i love the internet dang
Thanks man! This job was really easy after watching your video. 30 min and I was done.... 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

nice vid.shows how things go when ur felling ur way through a repair.
Thanks a lot I changed my ignition switch, problem solved I got it changed before and I got charge 600 dls
Again thank you
thanks for the info, helped a lot on my Intrigue. took a few hours, some #%$^ might have been said, but got htenew switch in & seemed to do the trick.
Bryan would you have any clue on my 99 Alero where the flasher is under the dash? Not the relay it's the round silver plug not the square black plug
Can you do a vid about changing the blinkers on the alero? Year 2000 plz. Its been giving me problems. I hope its not me alone.
I'm not sure if I understand you, The car doesn't have to start you just turn the key so it's in the "ON" position and push the button on the key cylinder and pull it out. it would have been cool to see you assemble the ignition switch and put it back together
thanks but what if my key lock is what is broken not the switch so that i cannot turn the key to the on position, or at all to the right?
How u fix?

very very very important on 12:37 of video those two wires the BLACK AND YELLOW WIRES are the main power or signal to ignition switch .you must connect them back to the switch or you will have nothing ....no power to the switch believe me i found out the hard way . THANKs to the video i seen them .that plug will get lost behind the dash .
What mounting kit did you use for your radio? I know it's completely random, but I've been wanting to put an aftermarket radio in.
I got the radio from Crutchfield, the mounting kits come with the radio if you buy from Crutchfield.
Did you have to get A new key and did you have to get it timed by GM?
what is the name of the white/black cable that was plugged into the back of the igntion at 12:08?
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO!!!!
So do you have to reset the body control module when you replace the switch?
I couldn't find anything that had step by step instructions on how to replace the switch, I thought this would help someone. Thanks for viewing.
Dwayne J what if it still doesn't start when u do the 10 minute reset
What if I lost my key to get that whit looking cable out
Me ba a servir mucho ya que le cambie yo tambien al alero
I cut the wall out beside the radio and pulled the switch through the radio opening, it sucks and still not fixed lol. Bought a dorman switch and was broke out the box. But mine is an olds intrigue
do i have to that if im switching the whole ignotion... on the 4 oclock turn to get key lock out
Would the ignition switch cause the tachometer to do this?
just pulled my switch out on my 01 Intrigue. If you own this car i was only able to get the switch out from behind the radio
turn the ignition to the "ON" position (without trying to start the car) and leave it for 10min, after that turn the ignition "OFF" for 10 seconds, repeat the process 2 more times.
What happens if you lost the key and you don't have the key to do all that
Strong car I need it I need a pretty good is Sharon Carr I want to put it in the ignition in a possible Integra 2001 Oldsmobile I want to put the ignition can you play a video to
I really couldn't say, it's possible. I'd try checking for a intrigue forum and searching if someone else had the same issue.
It should catch and not come out!I am having trouble getting the ignition to slide out can't get the plugin out
I did on my 99 model but it dont turn on the engine....the security light is on....help
Yes you still have to remove the key cylinder, to undo a wiring connection for the ignition.
I thought you had to reset the computer in order for the part to work?
Wait so I have to reset the computer Inorder for the part to work or ?
"sometimes" the fuel pump can do the same thing you described! running on low fuel allot or just fuel filter and whole system just sludged up! don't always have to pay the dealer $95 dollars to do a diagnostic charge is all im getting @. try lightly tapping the fuel tank just to see if you can spark up the fuel pump for a longer run atleast you can rule it out before taking it in...
This maybe true for all 2001 and up Aleros, because they changed the electronics for the 2001 model year.
WHAT IF YOU DONT HAVE A KEY TO THE IGNITION
i have a 2000 oldsmobile alero and it has all the same symptoms as the ones on the video and i change the ignition switch and the car still will not start can anyone help me out ?
Try this. Turn your key to the "on" position. Leave it for EXACTLY 10 minutes, turn it off for EXACTLY 2 seconds, on for EXACTLY 10 minutes, off for EXACTLY 2 seconds, and on for EXACTLY 10 minutes.
ok ill try that thanks
+duke97d it work
I don't remember If I had to do it or not, but you may have to. I just commented on how to reset it for someone else.
don't take the speedo out nextime.. just the stereo
Can you get to all the bolts from there?

+LuckyDrunk it's a joke.. they just mess with the keys unfortunately...
