    Just want to rectify some misinformation... flying foxes do not grow to a 6ft span here in Australia. The largest ones here are the grey-headed flying fox, and they can reach a span up to 4ft. The largest bats in the world, the six-footer flying foxes, are a Malaysian breed.

    • @boob72
      @boob72 10 ปีที่แล้ว +136

      No. In the summer they colonize large trees, make shit loads of noise because of their constant bickering. They stink up the place with their bat piss ( a large colony of bats living in a tree make a lot of piss). They shit on your car when they fly over it & the shit eats through the paint. They will attack every mango on your tree, only take one or two bites & then chuck it on the ground. They also carry the lyssavirus which is a type of rabies.

    I use to live in this town here in Australia called Ipswich, it had a bat colony in the middle of the town and the neighbours wanted to pull it down due to noise and the oder. But they didn't pull it down as it was a town icon. It was so beautiful to see at around 5pm, you'd see a blanket of bats fly over the city to the other side to feast on the fruit. I miss them.

      Me, too. They're beautiful. My Mother disagrees, but what does she know? Well, a lot, but not so much about animals and how beauty is all around us. Sometimes it's difficult to see, but it's there somewhere.
      I have been terrified of spiders (particularly Tarantulas and those gigantic jungle spiders), but I've done my own exposure therapy for 2 yrs. I got to the point where I couldn't say the word, "tarantula" without horrible nightmares. Now I watch videos of them at night.
      But I doff my hat to you Aussies for being able to live amongst some of the largest ones on the planet, namely the bird-eating tarantula. They still give me a slight shudder.

    Even if they'd fly towards you, they'd NEVER EVER EVER hit you. Last summer I had a fun experiment with (smaller) bats flying around in a wood in Malaysia. They were 2 bats flying around in circles, and I would stand in the middle and move a bit in their fly-path, or raise a hand up, not ONCE they touched me, even though they brushed by me a few times. It was amazing and not at all scary.

    These little guys (flying fox/fruit bat, the only flying mammal) live in colonies in Australia, Philippines, and some parts of Asia and Africa. They can grow to massive sizes and come in different colours. They live only on fruits and raise their babies for up to 6 months at a time and are not eco locators like the vampire bats, they rely on eyesight. Depending on the area their predators are hawks, crocodiles, and other large birds of pray. However they are accident prone in urban areas due to their strict restrictions of take off, making them get trapped in city areas easily resulting in injury or starvation. They live together in trees and typically fly at night to look for fruit and water.
    However they are bound to be extinct in 20 years due to lack of food and deforistation.
    Flying foxes cannot stand upright nor walk as their hips and legs and feet are backwards. They sleep, eat, mate, birth, all hanging upside down.
    They can be prone to disease such as the rabies virus, it is very rare but possible. If you get scratched or bitten by a flying fox that has the virus in its brain, it can be transmitted to you. So it is highly recommended not to touch them unless you have been vaccinated.
    If you ever find a flying fox that is trapped or injured there are many wildlife carers you can call that will rescue the bat.
