Sewing/Craft Room Organization: Gutting My Storage

  • Hello Friends! This week, I felt like it was time to really knuckle down and get the rest of my things cleaned up and organized in my sewing studio. The closet was really my secret shame and it took up the whole room when i exploded everything out of it. The drawers were not much better, but i did manage to get it all tackled and tidy. Come, check out all of my loot, and hang out while I get my sanity back through some purging, some organizing, and a lot of "why do I own this?"

I understand your dilemma, I too like to have visual ‘stuff’ for inspiration and yet I want it ‘clean’. Sometimes just organizing like you did in this video gives great inspiration.
As long as you love your space that’s all that matters.

In experimenting with fabric manipulation, I found it helpful to use striped or checked cloth. Once I understood the process, I could switch to fashion fabric. I made some of the things in that book, but in my defense, it was in the 80's. :) [I do not wish to participate in a reality in which you question your need for wands.]

I have a 'poll' suggestion, and mayyyyybe an idea for a place to put your dolls.
*Poll:* Heck, make the jean jacket. That would be so different from anything you done in the past...2 years? Love to see that.
*Dolls:* It looks like, to the right of your window, you have just enough room for a floating shelf if you move that picture up. It should be long enough for the dolls. (Including that Bernadette doll!

I think do the white corset to get it done, and also because you still have the construction fresh in your head. If it were me, I'd put it off until I really needed it and then rush through going "okay wait what next" every five seconds. I like your bits and pieces of decoration on your desk. Those commenters would be over the top if they saw all the actual clutter around my sewing machine... I'm making a late 19th century pattern waistcoat with modern frog print fabric from Ye Olde JoAnn as the fashion fabric and it is sweeeet.

fiber content note: I found in testing mystery 2nd-hand fabrics that the warp and weft threads can be different fiber contents. 100% cotton weft and poly-cotton blend warp (for strength) Separating the threads and doing a burn test could help you find out if there is any silk in that black and green stripe fabric. Good luck detecting 🕵🏻‍♀️🧵

Your sewing room, and especially your closet is like the clown car of storage spaces. All those wands must be for magicking so much stuff into itty bitty sewing space.
Also, THANK YOU for not pulling punches and being willing to always stand up for what is right. So often people in creative spaces are afraid to speak their minds for fear of public retribution. It is refreshing to see someone say, matter of factly, this is what I feel is right or wrong, without hesitation. Kudos.

I had an organization idea when you were showing the costume go bag drawer situation. As with any organization situation, you do you since brains all work differently.
The thought that I had was to store the costume with its go bag together. To do this, I thought of two different possible organizing (you do you!) solutions from my scouting uniform experiences. Since you already keep most of a costume on a hanger, I would either get a garment bag where you can have the go bag, hose, etc. hang out in the bottom of the garment bag (and you can find some garment bags inexpensively) or I have taken a gallon ziploc bag and stabbed the hangar hook through the bag so the bag is at the top of the hangar. This way you can have storage where the hangar part is sometimes empty with the bulk folded over the hangar. Or even over a coat. Similarly, I have hung on a hangar a typical plastic shopping bag and kept that as an item next to my uniforms as a hanging storage, but my bet is that since you are limited on hangar space, that this probably won't work as well. Alternatively, if you have extra room in your hat box for a particular costume, maybe I would keep the go bag with the hat.
This way instead of grabbing a costume's particulars from 3+ different spots, it could be reduced by one spot.

    • @Costuming_Drama
      @Costuming_Drama  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yes but for a closet that is already way too small, adding go bags to that makes everything worse. I already tried this and it took up so much more space!

I dance Hawaiian hula and I do the same thing with my costumes. I have a garment bag and put the accessories in the bottom. I also have a really cheap hanger thing that is supposed to be for ties that I use to hang my flower leis on.
And I vote for jean jacket next, especially if you can use that rainbow edged material.

If you want drawer room hang your costumes in garment bags and put your go kits in the bottom of them. It’ll probably also make a bit more room in your closet. I know it really consolidated my workroom when I did it and I don’t have to go searching for anything when I want to pack a costume. 😍Ahh, Japanese fabrics!! What is the thing you were going to use them for?
😍💕 OMG, awesome Wonder Woman doll! Rock it! (Wild Stallion air guitar)
May I make a suggestion about your desk…I will anyways😒😅… I saw some glass containers on there. Would they be able to string together and be hung from the ceiling? That would certainly get them off the counter space.
What should you do next? Hmm, if you neeeed a white pair of stays, then maybe do that, but you've been talking about a jean jacket for a while now that I think it's entered your subconscious. I will always vote practicality and necessity, so I vote jean jacket number 1 and stays number 2!

And thanks to a comment below I now have an idea for keeping costume accessories with my costume...a travel jewelry organizer seems perfect to me as long as I have a hanger with the little loop on it. The jewelry organizer can hang from the loop and should remain relatively flat against the costume. As another comment said though...you do you. I love seeing how other people organize their spaces. I took your advice from last week and did the thing. I finished the neckline on my shift, started on the PJs (I am about 2/3 of the way done with the pants), and started hand sewing on the pocket on the apron. I also decided to take apart my first attempt at a shift, which I kind of hated. It's based on the Simplicity/American Duchess Outlander pattern and the ruffles on the sleeves and neckline were kind of hideous on mine. I think I have managed to remove the ruffles without completely wrecking the fabric, so I am going to try to turn it into a very basic shift to wear under future 18th century costumes, rather than making a whole new shift.

You mentioned the dust everywhere and all the time, and I just wanted to mention that since getting a Dyson stick vacuum, which has a really good closed filter system, I have so much less dust everywhere, because the vacuum actually keeps the dust inside instead of putting it out into the air to settle again. Tons of vacuums don't have closed filter systems so just disperse the dust.

I like having my tools at hand an not having to dig them out of drawers every time I find a few spare minutes to string beads, sew, or cut fabric. Of course, cutting and ironing always mean moving a cat and wiping down the cutting surface, or running the lint roller over the ironing board despite the sacrificial pillow case for the cats' perching pleasure. Closed cupboard doors in the kitchen make me claustrophobic, so I removed the doors, and later this year the upper cabinets will go away entirely.

I enjoy these organizational videos. They seem to both calm me and ignite my own desire to clean up my area. As for the dolls on the desk (sounds like a children's story) perhaps raise them up via command hooks? Trying to forget the world and its insanity, I recently watched "Free Guy" on Disney+. It has mixed reviews, but it made me happy and made me laugh aloud, so worth it for me. As for You Tube comments we all forget that our words do not convey our vocal tones hence I am using these: 😉❤️. As for a next project from "the board" how about the parasol one? OR (just looked this one up) how about pet en l'air ?

If you want the stays, make the stays! As you said, you make this is what happened videos and not tutorials, so doing similar things doesn't make it boring to me. How things happen is always different each time.
Refolding fabric to get it to fit spaces to be able to cram more in there, is so relatable!
Really inspiring to see you getting so much space back from organizing.
Thinking a lot about the war right now. Feel like I have gotten so many new perpectives on the world in a short amount of time. It hits different when things are happening right now and not just in a history book. When Ukraine is only a 2 hour flight away and I know people that have family there.

Loved this video! Watching organizing content just makes my lizard brain so happy. I did have a question (that might be answered in other video please feel free to redirect me to one of them). How did you transition from politics major to working on website design? As a fellow liberal arts major who is interested in maybe making that shift, I’m curious. Also for next project idea - how about doing that corset for the friend? Different than doing stays but completes another to do!

    • @Costuming_Drama
      @Costuming_Drama  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I literally learned html from my friend in an hour and then got a job as a web producer. It was 2000, so the bubble was happening and demand was high. I also come across in interviews as highly competent, so that helped, but it was right place, right time, and then I rode the wave from there. But honestly, just try. If that’s what you want to do, it’s worth it. Someone will want you.

Not that you actually NEED more stuff (says the fellow hoarder with too many hobbies), but origami may help with fabric manipulation. I’d suggest watching a few videos on tessellations. They’re incredibly cool to watch being collapsed from a flat sheet into a multilayered, repeating pattern. I learned to fold 36 years ago at the world Expo in Vancouver, BC. It really helped me understand shaping, and dart manipulation when I started sewing in my teens. Though, if you don’t feel like jumping down another rabbit hole, that’s perfectly okay. 😁
I love “snooping” videos like this!! It’s always fun for me to help or watch people organize their craft rooms. I love learning about other hobbies and especially seeing ones I have in common with the organizer. I’m also inspired by cacophony…particularly colorful cacophony! I get some of my best ideas from tchotchke collections and abstract art.
Let’s see…Reading: the back catalogue of Spin Off magazine. I’m still hard into spinning! I just bought two new spindles, and found out a dear friend’s husband is building us both spinning wheels!! There are schematics for a 3D printed wheel available online for free, and he has access to an industrial 3D printer. So cool! Listening: some exceptional pain management guided meditations on Insight Timer. It’s the best meditation app on the market, imho, and most of it is free to access. Watching: Noelle organize her craft room. 🤣 And spinning videos, and I’ve really been in to nail art videos.
I’d really enjoy watching you make stays, again. Honestly, though, I’m here for the chatter first, and anything else you happen to do is just the icing on the cake, so do what feels good to you in the moment. Be well, and thank you for the peek at your stash!!

About the Green/Black stripe fabric: Rayon, yes, likely. Unfortunately, since you said pure paper smell, its almost certainly not a silk blend, as you would get the burnt hair smell with that, because its a protein-based fiber like wool. You said it had an afterglow; could it be rayon/cotton blend?
ETA: As for next projects? Perhaps you should do either (a)finish some of the random stuff you just found or (b) whatever else you feel like ..which is of course what you should always do!

Enjoyed this week's content. 😊 When you clean I make notes for you but really it's for me and my stuff hahaha 💗 so as your loving older sewing sister advice or I could be ur aunt as I'm 60 . Buckram and silks on rolls, use your muslin ( bolts of fab have pos 10 flaws in, eg: stains) to whip up some tube bags called dust covers, for storage! Environmentally better than plastic . Check your fans aren't dried out and cracked. Shipping drawer and kit things together on right side .
I'm reading ( from my shelf) The Dance of Intimacy by Harriet Goldhor Lerner PhD 1989. I guess I wasn't ready to hear it b4 now 🤔. Having total fun cutting up my cotton scraps to make Jordan Fabrics 'Scrap Strip Trip Quilt!'
When I saw your pure perfection new chapeau I really want Nicole Rudolph to see...borrow...it for her cruise . Though I'm thinking now it's probably not correct time period 🙂 Would go for seeing you do an embroidery video ( or partial while you chat to us) Glad you found more room- space in your drawers / closet to free up space in your head 🥰💖🙏🍁

I finished my trousers draft! Mostly, it looks a little off but, I’m hoping to meet with someone to help with that.
I just finished reading Beloved by Toni Morrison and now I’m kinda between books since I’ve designated Count of Monte Cristo for only when I’m working on stuff.(the heavy French terminology is a little harder for me to focus on without having something else going on at the same time)
Watching wise I haven’t been watching much, mostly the treehouse of horror Simpsons when I need a pick me up, and a lot of TH-cam. Markiplier’s 3 scary games series, Rachel Macksy and LaurenZside’s series have been kinda the right amount of entertainment without thinking for my migraine ravaged brain. Also Nile Wilson’s gymnastics blogs and equestrian instructional videos have been a nice bit of athletic goal inspiration

You want the next project? Maybe not the 1870s corset, because you said no on that, but how about your friend’s corset? Unless that’s the same thing. Sorry haven’t been watching as regularly as I’d like to, or maybe I’d know. But if you do your friend’s corset, she’ll have it back, you’ll have the space back, and I find it’s always easier to finish something for someone else much sooner than things I’m making for myself. Seems like you’re different from me there. You get plenty done. But maybe it’ll be a good filler project? Or you can finish up some of your smaller projects, like the initialed reticule? Or some of your little project bags? Just a speed run, but of small UFOs?

It also made me happy to look at you stuff thinking: Yes, I have horrible stuff in inordinate amounts, but compared to yours, mine is a little stashette. So thanks for showing us. And you mentioned discovery of witches! I think the costumes are awesome - they take some inspiration from history and then run with it and there are some interesting shapes to stop and wonder.
