40 years ago, my father arranged for me to have a full colour analysis done as a gift. I was starting my professional life and he wanted me to make informed choices as I built my wardrobe. I still carry my swatch wallet in my handbag and try to stick to my colours when making fabric decisions. I appreciate feeling my best self in the colours that suit me. Also, the items in my closet don't follow the trendy colours so I feel fabulous in pieces that are decades old and can match them up just as easily with new ones. No regrets!
I am an old woman now and still actively make my own clothes - sewing and knitting. Understanding what colours work is an essential part of one's appearance. I have understood what colours work for me since I was little - my mother made our clothes then and would dress me - a very fair blonde - and my sister - a gorgeous freckled hazel haired child - in the same colors and patterns. When I worked n the corporate world in the 80's a colleague dressed in greys and browns. She always looked tired and wan. She had a colour analysis done - a game changer for her. Updating your make-up routine is also important - seasons and years call for adapting the colour for foundation and blushers. Eye make-up is important too. I enjoy your posts and watching your evolution. Thank you.
It’s amazing the difference it can make can’t it and if you’re not confident with colour I guess greys, brown and black are ‘safe’ options. Thanks so much for watching xx
Really interesting vlog. I have noticed that since I've stopped colouring my hair colours I had worn make me look tired. I will invest in a colour analysis because you didn't push but questioned. Thank you Sally. X
Back in the day when I was a color consultant (it never really leaves you I'm always hyper focused on it... Color psychology and analysis and draping go hand in hand). I usually did groups of 4-6 at a time of the friends or relatives of each other in the group and asked them beforehand to bring all their makeup and fav jewelry. The makeup prob was always the most insightful for the clients. It wasn't unusual for them to start trading makeup and jewelry around each other. I'm sure you were told as a spring that gold is your metal etc. I know you have a daughter... Well, I draped everyone around me for practice. From toddler to senior. My daughters were 2&3 at the time. They've spent their lives (they're 39-40) in "their colors". Ones a spring ones a winter, I'm a summer) That includes makeup and even the paint on their bedroom walls when they were kids. Men were the hardest to convince. But it wasn't long until they started golfing wearing their colors. It was kinda cute to watch them strutting around the club house etc. I've draped all the gkids. I can't really help myself. I just usually do it while shopping with them in the garment section and they all get it pretty quick. Some are 17 the youngest is 7. The 3 yr old is a boy that will have to wait a bit to show him. But he's so obviously a spring. Once you know it.... You just know it. My suggestion....??? Your daughter will prob thank you to get her on the right band wagon early. 😊
Yes, gold was my metal and I have worn silver and white gold for years!! I am going to look for some cheaper gold items and see how I feel in them. You're right, I would love to take my daughter I might buy it for her as a gift x
@SecretLifeOfASeamstress I have discussed with my daughter over the years, just be aware if she dyes her hair and is fairly neutral it can really change! Naturally I am a winter but leaning to autumn because I'm pretty neutral. Naturally she is a spring? It's the warm toned low contrast one. Lol. But she dies her hair black dark brown or auburn and she flips what looks good.
Thank you for sharing your colour journey. 😊 This is something I’ve thought about also, just never got around to. I feel my colours are similar to yours (prefer warm tones) and interesting to note that I use brown mascara also. 😊
I find it interesting they don't do seasons now! I found a book from the 80s and they were definitely grouped into 4 seasons back then! But you were right! That book was always spot on for me!
I’m from the generation that had the seasons of color. There was a book. My parents had it. I was a teenager. I’m a spring, which means I can’t wear black or white near my face. It did teach me about tone and shade. In the 1980’s harsher colors were in. I discovered that Fucshia makes my skin look yellow but raspberry is fine, although, like you, I’m better with the orange reds than the blue reds. I see you wearing a coral nail polish, too. I’m with you on the brown mascara-it may be best, but not as noticeable or dramatic. Even though I think I do know my colors, I’d love to do an analysis. Even just for the conversations. And I’m sure there are some things I can learn.
It's interesting how long the analysis has been going because I had thought it was a relatively new thing! So interesting too how a slight change in colour can make all the difference. Yes, I noticed the coral nails matched one of my reds so well haha x
You have made a lovely informative video . Thanks .. I had my colours done over 40 years ago, and since my hair is still it's natural colour, they haven't changed much from dark brown, cream, soft golden yellow, and khaki/olive greens :) But they were already the colours I loved to wear. I think we innately know what is right, but fun to know WHY. However after the world was saturated with dark brown in the 70's it was impossible to find this colour, and the new ones were so hard to wear. Even sewing, I find that the fabrics come in for the new season, in ONE of the seasons. A year ago, there was nothing or me to buy! This year, it is all in my colours and I am loving it.
I am so glad you had your colors done! I did mine over the internet during the lockdown and loved the experience. It was very accurate and it confirmed some things that I have noticed on my own, just as yours did. I love the Pimpernel viscose you picked out. I am a huge fan of William Morris and have had that blue version on my radar for a couple years. I can’t wait to see it sewn up as the Anthea Blouse, perfect choice. You absolutely glowed with your new makeup, particularly the blush, I think 🥰
This was fun. I'm actually not surprised about your results as I think the colours you got given really suit you. I haven't officially had my colours done but I know that I am a dark autumn. I have a warm undertone, brown eyes and dark brown hair. I remember my husband used to tell me that I don't suit white whenever I used to wear a white top. Now I know what he meant as ivory is more my white 😊
It’s very interesting about the different shades isn’t it. It’s good that you have a great understanding of your own colours too 😊 Thanks so much for watching xx
I really enjoyed listening to your colour experience, thanks Sally, it was so interesting. I think maybe I might try it as a birthday gift too 🎉 your make up looks lovely BTW 😊
I took myself and my two daughters to have our colours sorted last month. My girls are 44 and 29 and I am 61. I have always wanted this done but it was costly and can only afford to have it done now. It is amazing how colours can lift you or drain you! Glad you and we have had this done now and we won’t be buying colours that make us look ill 😉
Chelsea did a wonderful job with you, your colors suit you perfectly. I really like the way Colour me Beautiful works with color, I was analyzed with them as well and am a Soft Cool (or a Soft Summer in other systems). I think in other systems, the equivalent of a Warm Soft is a True Autumn. By the way, the lipstick you thought was too bright looked amazing on you IMO. Enjoy your new palette !
I had my color done through House of Color and found that I was an autumn, which has similar colors to yours. Huge change for me I dressed as a winter for so long. Brown mascara was a huge change for me too, but now I love it! Wear the bright lipstick. It is so fun.
Hi Yes its a game changer I had mine done plus my style of clothes as well years ago I’m Autumn which are exactly the same colours as yours The reds are amazing on me I try to get a geranium colour with orange tone Stay away from blue tones Such a good video xx❤️❤️❤️❤️
It’s interesting to hear how you got on. I’ve had my analysis done by Colour me Beautiful and I’m exactly the same as you! I wear spiced peach lipstick and the same blusher. I know my colours now pretty much inside out and I’ve found it super useful. People always comment on the colours I wear suiting me so it must make sense!
Thanks for another great video 😊 I find colour analysis fascinating and would like to have it done one day. I’ve also been really inspired by your hexi quilt and have decided to make one! So thank you! 🤩
I follow Dressing Your Truth. Not only colour, but texture, pattern and design lines are important according to your nature. I got rid of all the black and grey from my wardrobe and am slowly building it back up with clothes I enjoy wearing and it's so much easier to mix and match.
There are definitely warm and cool tones of blue, just like lemon is a cool yellow, but mustard or Marigold are warm yellows. Every colouring of skin tone has a tone and shade in every colour that they can wear.
Thank you for a most interesting vlog. You have inspired me to look into having a colour analysis done. Now that I'm getting older and my hair and skin tones are maturing, I'm sure it would be very helpful. It looks like you had a lovely relaxing day out. Thank you.
Warm earthy tones suit me best but oh I have such trouble finding them! I mostly shop second hand and everything seems to be blue!! Even in good old Marks.
Wow Sally.very interesting time that you have had. I always think that your colours and fabric choice is great and suits you well. Love the fabric that you bought and look forward to seeing what you decide to make.
Hi Sally, I'm glad you had a positive experience having your colours done. I had my colours done years ago and since then my hair is a natural grey, so I had thought I might have it done again, to see if there are colours I can now wear.
Brilliant! So glad it was interesting and helpful. I feel similarly as a sewist, that is we're going to all this effort hand making our clothes, then every bit of self reflection makes the work more worth it
I think it's super cool to have the make up analysis done with it! That's actually the part I would be very interested in. I feel like many of us just do our makeup "like we've always done it" without any clue if it really suits us or not?
Just to let you know.... If you ever come across a dark green mascara.... Buy it, buy several, its rare... And every spring coloring looks fabulous in it. You're lucky actually springs age gracefully and never look their age. And most makeup avail commercially is actually mostly beige peach yellow or brownish based
@@SecretLifeOfASeamstress I have been wearing brown mascara ever since my colour analysis a couple of years ago. I would never go back! You are right, in the beginning it feels weird not to use black mascara, but after a while it's the opposite and black feels to much.
Great video Sally! I recently had my colours done as I felt as I'd lost my way a bit and as I have only recently started sewing, I wanted to ensure I wear the clothes I make. I found the whole experience very interesting and helpful. Even though I already understood what suited me quite well, it's made decision making much faster and easier
Oo I recognise all those colours, I'm a warm spring too and we can borrow from warm autumn. Having my colours done has saved me so much. I've made dresses in the passed and when finished hated them but realise tgey were awful colours on me 😊
I had the same type of colour analysis. It was really interesting. I've got out of the habit of keeping my wallet of colours around but this has reminded me! Hopefully it will help you with choosing fabric etc. I found it most helpful for identifying the better neutral colours for me where subtle differences can really change how I feel about a garment.
Yes! I think this is what struck me most, I had never really considered the difference in whites, blacks, navy etc it’s so interesting how different they can feel on you x
@@SecretLifeOfASeamstress change of hair colour. I was dark then I dyed it to Reddish brown upto before we move to Trinity House. So you and I worked together, I had the dark colour hair. Now as you can see, I am completely grey, by choice
Loved this vlog, it was really interesting. I had my colours done many years ago, they are very similar to yours and it has really helped over the years shopping for clothes and fabrics, eventually all your wardrobe goes together. Your fabrics are all gorgeous, the shop looked lovely
Great video Sally, very interesting 😊 I think subconsciously, you have always known what suits you, but that this process has certified that with just some little surprises 😊a tip I was given about choosing lipstick is to squeeze the end off your finger and the shade it turns is the shade you should choose and sray in with the same tones 😊 I think I am cool tones, mid to dark colours as I have very Scottish pale skin that doesn't tan 😮 but I would like to get my colours done too just to see if I am right 😊 your fabrics are lovely , perhaps something simple like a shift dress for the busy William Morris print and something like the fleur top for the other fabric as that could take the extra details of the bows 😊 happy sewing 😊😊
Ah thank you for that tip I’ve not heard of that before, and for the suggestions for the fabric. I love the look of the Fleur Top. Thank you for sharing your experience too xx
Hi Sally that was really interesting, your colours look lovely on you. I also think your blouse is beautiful and much better than the images for the official pattern. I have just made a cardigan today using some leftover fabric and was wondering why I don't love it on and now I am realising it is the colour, I love the colour but I think it is not the best on me on by itself as it is too pale, the deeper shade is better for me. This relates to what you were saying about the colours not being out of bounds just the shade or hue.
So happy for you on this color discovery, I am sure extra confidence is always welcomed when chossing fabrics let along what will I be sewing with it. Thank you for sharing love your channel
I found your vlog really interesting. I had my colours done 12 years ago with House of colour and found it equally interesting. I had a fair idea about what suited me but it becomes so clear. I also hated the part when I sat in front of the mirror without makeup. I kept seeing my father’s face 😂as I never go without makeup, since my early teens as I was always very pale. I have a lovely wallet which I use when I’m trying to really compare a colour closely especially if ordering online. My red is cherry. I’m still unsure about it and sometimes it’s hard to identify. It was hard not to wear black but I always knew I need colour near my face and I still wear black trousers and boots and tights mainly because it’s hard to find navy boots etc. There’s a company I was introduced to called Kettlewell that sells clothes in all the shades but divided into seasons. I think it sounds as if you’d be autumn. It mostly sells stretchy tops and cardigans/ jackets but it’s worth looking at and nice quality. I’m a summer but I still have to refer to my book which gives me colour combinations. Some colours just come easily and sometimes I just make a judgement. I was also introduced to Duo boots which caters for people’s calf size so boots actually fit me in the leg as mine are skinny but I wear a size 6-7. I can never buy boots in ordinary shops. They are a big investment but very well made.I hope this info is helpful to you too. 😊
Ah thank you so much for sharing it’s so interesting to hear other peoples experiences and the difference it can make. Thanks so much for watching too x
It was interesting to watch your color analysis. You have always innately known what colors look good on you but it was really interesting to see your completion drain of color when the cooler colors were close to your face and then warm back up with the warm colors. As an FYI, some mascaras come in black brown which might work well for you. Thank you for a very interesting video.
You turned out to be exactly the colouring I expected. It's funny that they changed away from the seasons. Colour me Beautiful was the one I went to about 37 years ago, and they called me a tawny autumn, which is essentially the same as your colours, but slightly deeper, richer, and with a hint of gold overtone. You would have been called a soft autumn back then. There was a deeper autumn version as well. I wonder if maybe they went away from the seasons because the concept is rather subjective and probably confused people, whereas saying soft, warm, deep, clear, cool, muted, etc. is easier for people to understand. It's funny, but the makeup case is still exactly the same after all these years, where you snap out the colour pans when they are empty and snap in new ones. I didn't realize they still had them. I should go get some refills. I was supposed to wear brown mascara too, but to me, that is a casual look on me, so I use brownish black when dressing up or going out. I think that is because my eye lashes are so thin, fair, and fine that they are almost non-existent, so the brown mascara barely makes my eye lashes show up at all. I definitely don't like black mascara on me though. I love purple on you. You really should make something to wear out of your purple.
Ah how funny! I think the explanation about the seasons was that it's more global i.e. we would see summer as warm and Australia cold etc. Funny you say about purple, I feel like purple is the one colour I really don't like but perhaps I'm forgetting something I've made from purple which is entirely possible haha x
I think the colours you got are perfect for you. I love the fabrics you chose as well, I think the second fabric would make an amazing wrap dress or wrap blouse . There is something about it that feels quite nautical.
That was very interesting. You're drawn to colours that suit you already and that's your main choice. The unusual ones would be special occasion maybe. Know what you mean about sitting in front of a mirror, hate going to the hairdresser 😂
I enjoyed watching your day, days out like that are so relaxing (apart from the no make up bit!). Also very interesting about the colour analysis, you always look great in the soft light and neutral shades you choose. Something colour analysis doesn’t focus on is personality and I think those shades are so ‘you’. I was typed years ago as a dark autumn (warm and dark), it took some adjustment as I thought I was a winter (cool and dark). I don’t always wear autumn colours but they do look the best on me and those deep shades work with my personality too. Have fun experimenting, I will be interested to see if you try some new colours!
Really interesting to hear about your experience. I've always thought that light and soft were your two main chromatic characteristics, and that you knew this too, as those are the types of colours you were already drawn to. I was surprised earlier this year when you said you wanted to add in more black, as I assumed you'd already concluded it wasn't the very best colour for you. I think sometimes we ignore our own instincts when being influenced by external inspiration, like what other people are wearing and what's dominating the high street, and it can take something like this to validate our own judgement. Did Chelsie give you an order of priority of the warm/soft/light characteristics? For example that your dominant requirement is the softness or muted quality of a hue, followed by the value (light or dark), and that perhaps temperature is less important? Or was equal weight given to each characteristic?
I don’t think any priority was given but I may be forgetting now! Yes it’s interesting that lots were what I had already thought. I think the black maybe was influenced by external factors, I think I’ll still wear black in trousers etc but not right against my face 😊 Thanks so much for watching xx
Have you tried the Lune dress from French Poetry? Fabric Godmother sell the pattern. I made it in the summer for a wedding and used Liberty Tana Lawn. It’s a beautiful dress and I think you would love the shape of the dress. 🍂
I’m the type of person that doesn’t believe in that color chart. My theory is just make something in the print or the color that you like and once you get done the garment if that makes you feel great inside that’s all that matters doesn’t matter what anyone else says. My personality says I like bright bold colors, my daughter always ask me when I am going to change to a more muted palate..I say I am not so deal with it.😂😂😂
Lovely video. I had my colours done years ago and we're the same. I was advised not to wear anything darker than a royal blue. I love coral, oranges, warm beige and mid blue. I've since gone grey so it would be interesting to see if these have changed x
I'm ambivalent about this colour analysis. It goes the rounds. I see Pele happening up fabric which looks beautiful against their face, then they put it down because it isn't one of"their"colours. If you like it, wear it.
I think it’s absolutely up to you, as I said in the video it isn’t a hard and fast rule obviously if you love something and want to wear it you wear it. If you find you’re discarding garments after making them because they don’t feel right (like I have done in the past) it can be a really worth while investment. Thank you for watching xx
What a lovely day! Color analysis, lunch out, shopping and fabric! Hope you came home refreshed.
It was lovely x

Wow Sally.very interesting time that you have had. I always think that your colours and fabric choice is great and suits you well. Love the fabric that you bought and look forward to seeing what you decide to make.
It was really interesting! Thanks so much for watching xx
What an interesting video Sally. I feel inspired to have my own colours done. Thanks for such an informative video
I'm glad you found it helpful xx
Hi Sally, I'm glad you had a positive experience having your colours done.
I had my colours done years ago and since then my hair is a natural grey, so I had thought I might have it done again, to see if there are colours I can now wear.
Oh yes i suppose that might be helpful. Maybe you could have a half analysis? X
Brilliant! So glad it was interesting and helpful. I feel similarly as a sewist, that is we're going to all this effort hand making our clothes, then every bit of self reflection makes the work more worth it
Yes it’s so true isn’t it. Like investing in quality fabric rather than cheap that won’t last or be worn x
I think it's super cool to have the make up analysis done with it! That's actually the part I would be very interested in. I feel like many of us just do our makeup "like we've always done it" without any clue if it really suits us or not?
Yes, that was certainly me! I'm glad I didn't know it was included in a way as I might have thought I didn't 'need' it haha x
Very interesting, definitely the makeup part too
It really was xx
Just to let you know.... If you ever come across a dark green mascara.... Buy it, buy several, its rare... And every spring coloring looks fabulous in it. You're lucky actually springs age gracefully and never look their age. And most makeup avail commercially is actually mostly beige peach yellow or brownish based
It's funny isn't it I would never have even thought to buy any other mascara colour than black - my eyes have been opened literally haha x
It's really helpful to know isn't it! Thank you for watching xx
Oo I recognise all those colours, I'm a warm spring too and we can borrow from warm autumn. Having my colours done has saved me so much. I've made dresses in the passed and when finished hated them but realise tgey were awful colours on me 😊
I used Style me Happy, they use the standard seasons/sub seasons which is easier when looking at make up etc. Maybelline do a fab dark brown mascara 😊
Yes I think it explains a few things for me too! I’m glad I had it done I think it will be helpful 😊 x
I had my colours done in March. I have cool tones now. I was Summer , when i last done in the early 90's. Its very helpful
Interesting that you’ve changed 😊 it is helpful to know isn’t it x
@@SecretLifeOfASeamstress change of hair colour. I was dark then I dyed it to Reddish brown upto before we move to Trinity House. So you and I worked together, I had the dark colour hair. Now as you can see, I am completely grey, by choice
Loved this vlog, it was really interesting. I had my colours done many years ago, they are very similar to yours and it has really helped over the years shopping for clothes and fabrics, eventually all your wardrobe goes together. Your fabrics are all gorgeous, the shop looked lovely
I’m hoping this will be really helpful in the future. Thanks so much for watching xx
Ah thank you so much! Sorry about your cardigan. I had a similar experience with mustard, I love it but have to be really careful about the tone x
@@SecretLifeOfASeamstress I have tried with a navy top under and this seems to help so all is not lost😀
Your makeup looks great. Loved the podcast.
Ah thank you xx
❤❤❤
This was a fascinating and very interesting video. I’ve really enjoyed it and am going to look into having colour analysis done. Thame you
I'm glad it was helpful xx
So happy for you on this color discovery, I am sure extra confidence is always welcomed when chossing fabrics let along what will I be sewing with it. Thank you for sharing love your channel
Thank you! Yes I hope it will be xx
Just a heads up- my colors have changed since I’ve aged + gone gray! I loved hearing about your experience ❤
Yes! I noticed that so much more while I was editing the video. I’m glad my analysis didn’t show I was going too far wrong haha x
Yes it is isn’t it! You’ve reminded me of a pattern I have so thank you 😁 x
@@SecretLifeOfASeamstress It's a pleasure 😄 I cant wait to see what you make with those fabrics
It looks like Chelsey made her dress with Robert Kauffman Flannel and the Fleur pattern. Nice video❤
I think it was the Nell Dress by Tilly :) xx
Yep it's the Nell in a Merchant and Mills linen 😊
She does a better job than most colorists 😊
That was very interesting. You're drawn to colours that suit you already and that's your main choice. The unusual ones would be special occasion maybe. Know what you mean about sitting in front of a mirror, hate going to the hairdresser 😂
Haha yes it’s a bit weird isn’t it! Thanks for watching I’m glad there were a few there I already love to wear x
Ah yes the personality side is interesting isn’t it! The no make up part was pretty scary haha. Thanks for sharing your experience xx
Wow you don’t even look 40, the English weather definitely helps.
Ah thank you xx
Omg can I ask where did Chelsea get her dresss from? Is it handmade? I love the pattern and the fabric!
It’s the Nell Dress it’s so pretty isn’t it x
This was really interesting. I have an appointment with a local Colour Me Beautiful consultant in few days time.
Ah good luck I hope you find it interesting too xx
Have you tried the Lune dress from French Poetry? Fabric Godmother sell the pattern. I made it in the summer for a wedding and used Liberty Tana Lawn. It’s a beautiful dress and I think you would love the shape of the dress. 🍂
Oh no I haven’t see that I’ll look it up thank you! X
I’m the type of person that doesn’t believe in that color chart. My theory is just make something in the print or the color that you like and once you get done the garment if that makes you feel great inside that’s all that matters doesn’t matter what anyone else says. My personality says I like bright bold colors, my daughter always ask me when I am going to change to a more muted palate..I say I am not so deal with it.😂😂😂
I think do whatever makes you feel happy :) x
Lovely video. I had my colours done years ago and we're the same. I was advised not to wear anything darker than a royal blue. I love coral, oranges, warm beige and mid blue. I've since gone grey so it would be interesting to see if these have changed x
Ah yes I guess that might change things a bit, it's interesting isn't it! Thank you for watching x
I'm pretty sure I know my colors but I'm to afraid to pay for a professional color analysis because I think I might not prepared for the result 😂
Haha yes I felt a bit like that x
I'm ambivalent about this colour analysis. It goes the rounds. I see Pele happening up fabric which looks beautiful against their face, then they put it down because it isn't one of"their"colours. If you like it, wear it.
I think it’s absolutely up to you, as I said in the video it isn’t a hard and fast rule obviously if you love something and want to wear it you wear it. If you find you’re discarding garments after making them because they don’t feel right (like I have done in the past) it can be a really worth while investment. Thank you for watching xx
