Henschel hats like this are also stocked by John Helmer in downtown Portland, Oregon.

Thanks for the tip. I now own 3 Henschel hats (all from Lee Valley), and they're the best I've ever owned. The one in this video is about 5 years old and still holding up fine.

I had one of those and I had hung it from a broken branch on a tree next to the entrance of my tent. I was in a primitive camping area; but it was a fairly busy weekend. When I awoke in the morning the hat and my coffee pot that was on a rock next to my fire pit were both missing. It's the only time I have been stolen from in the woods. Except the time a raccoon stole a loaf of bread from my wooden pantry box one handful at a time through a small hole in the side the rope handle went through.

hoosierarcher Man, that's harsh. That's why I like to camp on private land or Crown land up here in Canada whenever possible.
I can see theft like that happening with car camping as a lot of busy campsites turn into drunken cesspools of shiftless morons on the weekends (and this I know as I live about 10 km from two of these). But one would expect more from a primitive campsite, and from the supposedly "ethical" campers who often use them. "Ethical" is actually how a lot of these backcountry hikers like to style themselves.
I think that could be one more nail in the coffin of the Leave No Trace philosophy. No matter how "ethical" it tries to portray its followers, it's only as good as its weakest proponents, some of whom are real rotters.
I hope you managed to find another decent hat, though. And I hope that the one that got stolen constricts on the thief's head so tight that his head explodes.

Thank you for sharing Mr. Dean, specifically the pros and cons. I am looking for a good hat myself online, and you know how that can be not being able to try it on, so the details are important. Thanks again, and be safe out there.

+braddah_lakai Thanks!. I'm always looking for a good hat as I just like good hats. I try on a lot of them every year, and almost all of them go right back on the shelf. Currently my two favorite manufacturers are Henschel and Outback Trading Company, and both have good sizing guides on their websites.

Looks good on ya too. Take care

***** Thanks! I got the idea from the one you wore in your videos. I've recently discovered you can accidentally sit on this hat and squash it flat, and it doesn't affect it much.

it's a damned good hat by my thinking. you're gonna compromise with a hat just like a stove as i see it. that one you have has the wire, good brim, good lasting material, waterproof........ it looks right on ya. i like it. i'm looking for a new bush hat right now. plenty of'em for high dollar available too, but don't wanna mortgage house for a hat if ya know what i mean. that cotton canvass hat you have would do fine for me. i would wax it big-time and tarp grommet it like you said for air. no matter what kind there's upsides & downsides. i like yours. hit liked - thx.

Found a few better ones from Outback Trading, but this one was still 2/3 of the price.

Now this is just my opinion and does not have to be taken as absolute fact. But I have found that any hat that has a leather sweatband inside of it is not a very good Hat to keep your head cool. All of the hats that I have that I want to keep my head cool I rip out the leather sweat band and hand sew in a cloth sweat band. That way my sweat can be drawn out to the rest of the hat and Not running down my face. Everyone that has a leather sweat band inside of it makes the Sweat run right back down my face. That is why I like the henschel hats because the sweat band is cotton.

Lately I've been noticing the same thing. Thanks for the comment! I may try to see if there's a good way to add on a cotton sweatband, as most of my hats will turn into Beverly Hillbillies props if I gut the leather sweatband.

Great durable hat, but it indeed needs some ventilation holes on the side. I would also change the strap and make it Canadian mounted police style. With strap at the back of your head and in front of the chin. Prevents the hat from being pushed/blown off. My own hat is a Barmah Sundowner Aussie hat made from waterproof kangaroo leather. Super soft and durable squashable leather.

Kalecommando That's for certain. I've modified the strap by removing the fake leather thong and replacing it with paracord and it's pretty close to the RCMP style now. Plus it works better. The grommets are another story. I could replace them with basic leather grommets, but I'd rather find some of the larger ones with mesh on them. This would keep ticks and other bugs out where the regular grommets won't.I just found out this hat is quite crushable as well. I accidentally sat on it, and it went back into shape quite easily...

Thanks for that! I was looking for it recently and couldn't find it or the model they used to call the Breezer. Now I know where to look for this one. Unfortunately their Breezer line is harder to search ads they made it a whole product line.
