We discuss in depth about the history of Philippine citizenship from the pre colonial period to the Spanish colonization, American colonization and post independence.
Prior to the arrival of the Spanish in the Philippines before 1521, people in the archipelago were known by their barangays or their tribes such as being Visaya, Ilocano, Bicolano etc.
During the Spanish arrival of Magellan, they were able to unite all the islands in the archipelago and called it Philippines as a tribute to King Philip II of Spain.
In this era, the people called "Filipinos" were white European Spanish while the brown race were called "Indios".
The Spanish government sold control of the Philippine islands to the United States of America government in the treaty of Paris in Dec. 10, 1898 which was turned over April 11, 1899. The American government at first classified all individuals of the Philippine islands as non-citizen U.S. nationals. Eventually in the Philippine organic act of 1902 by the US congress, they classified all those who were already in the territory prior to their takeover were classified as Philippine citizens. Subsequently in 1912 the US Governor General of the Philippines and the Philippine legislature extended birthright or jus soli (by soil) citizenship to all those born in the territory of the Philippine islands while under American regime.
In the first constitutional draft for independence of the Philippine republic, they drafted the 1935 constitution which classified all those already Philippine citizens are the first citizens of the country and all those who have at least one parent who is a Filipino citizen will be a natural born citizen while naturalization was also introduced at the same time. Subsequently the 1973 and 1987 constitutions adapted the same jus sanguinis (by blood).

Original people from Taiwan were Austronesians, however there was a wave of Chinese migration overtaking their population that multiplied faster than the original brown natives of Taiwan (formerly Formosa). Some of the ethnic chinitos from Taiwan then migrated again to the Philippine islands.

I would like to comment sa sabi nyo saan ipinanganak magulang o mga lolo/lola. Southern PH may mga kilala kami pinanganak sa Labuan (Now Malaysia) pero dati PH pa. Meron din cases sa Balut Island 2nd or 3rd even 4th generation Philippine born pero nde Pilipino. Indonesian with ACR sila.

@@iliveinduniverse many people fail to understand that race or "lahi" is not the basis of being a Fillipino citizen. The timing is due to the discussion of the moment, since it is what people are confused about. Many people think the indonesian rooted kayumanggi are the true Filipinos, but in fact it was the negritos, aetas and tribes that were here originally before all these races started coming to the islands (Whites, Browns, Yellows etc). We explained the wrong procedures that Alice Guo took in order to become a citizen, it seems they took a short cut from a fixer at the NSO based on what investigations have found out.
