If the background is wool, add the stabilizer after stitching as you don’t need to add body to the background. If it’s cotton or flannel (the background) add the stabilizer first. It makes it nigh on impossible to pull stitches.
Very, very helpful. Watching your tutorial was much better than reading it in a book. Question: It bothers me that when layering the pieces, I end up with lumps when top pieces only partly cover the layer beneath. Does that unevenness bother you?

Not really, but if it bothers you, trim away the under layer so that you’ll catch it while stitching
