I'm assuming you're talking about the black outer cover, if that's the case, then no you don't have to drain the coolant. If your taking of the water pump cover, then obviously drain the coolant. -Charles
What is the other ring called behind the o ring you replaced on the coolant elbow at the top of the water pump? That's the only part stopping me from putting mine back together I lost it some where and I don't know the name of the part to buy it. I don't want to buy the whole elbow and stuff for a clip or another o ring or whatever it might be called
It sounds like you're referring to CIRCLIP Part# 93440-19083-00 . We have an OEM parts finder where you can enter your machine and go through all the schematics to make sure you're getting the correct part. Doesnt Yamaha use JIS screws not phillips? I thought that's why a Phillip's screwdriver always wants to cam out of them.
Don't you "burb" the radiator/coolant system to make sure all of the air is out of the system?
I would line up the drain pan, then pop the rad cap.

So how bad is it when the seal between the water pump and the oil breaks, what will I have to replace (it’s been sitting for a while like that)
Does the vent hose just dangle freely?
Do you need to use a new gasket for the clutch cover or can the old one be reused? You didn't say in the video
We used a new gasket in this video and we would always recommend doing the same.

Is it completely necessary to use a cir clip or can I get by without it?
It's a $2 dollar piece that could potentially cause a lot of damage, definitely would not recommend not using one.
