Good build! I was playing around with the idea of a boom with gate hardware too. I had the idea of a two section boom to get around my garage door frame but will definitely have issues with sag. Thanks for the build!
Very nicely done! Subscribed. What I did to give myself a bit more room was mount a shelf on unused wall space (in my case, above the right wing of my table saw) and park the vac up there. That way, it's not taking up any floor space. I also use a dust deputy so I won't have to change the bag or filter for literally years. My own boom arm will end up being a mishmash of all the videos I've watched using the features that suit me.
I wish I found your channel a couple weeks ago because I just built a cleat wall with 70mm faces, wish I did 60mm as I am about to buy the shaper origin and like your designs. I’m definitely building this boom arm! Love your content so far , keep it up!

Very cool, i will need to retrofit a tension cable to mine as the sag is real! My personal approach is that i have a "dock" for my CT26, which connects into a separator/collection bin - but i can always disconnect as needed. From there i have central vac tubing running up the wall to the end of the boom arm (with a piece of flex vac pipe for the swinging joint) so that i only had to have the one pricey festool hose 😂
Nice I did think about a pre-separator but space is an issue. Instead I just bought a bag for life. Though it is annoying to have to open up the CTL to see how full. I have an older CTL mini connected to my mitre saw and as part of soon to start mitre station build I might fit a cyclone separator though height with hose fitted might be a problem.

As to the interest , other than the Shaper, the project is accessible to the average crafter, I think. Small project make a good entry point or even midrange point for people to get involved in the craft or woodwork, or any other "maker" sort of endeavor.
Thank you for sharing this video. It's a really nicely engineered arm. My situation is slightly different, in that my shop is 8m long by around 2.5m wide. I'm going to have to come up with some kind of overhead gantry with a sliding trolly. You have inspired me to do something about it. I'm fed up with dragging my shop vac around and having cables ad vacuum hoses snagging on stuff. Also, I want to say how great it is to have someone from the UK creating woodworking content. You know I actually recently installed a ceiling gantry for my lights has X,Y and even Z movement. Probably overkill for a hose but would be a solution for a bigger shop perhaps 🤔

@keithforster2615 lol mine is low tech just aluminium extrusion with sliding carriage. Position movements by hand. Will do a short soon on how it works and how I installed it.

Hi, great summary at the beginning and good video overall. WRT to the design, did you say that the boom arm pieces would assemble together without any glue or screws? I don't mean during the initial dry fit, I mean the final assembly. If so, why? surely using at least screws will add strength while still allowing for disassembly later on if needed. I was also confused about your choice of hinge, since it seemed to have a lot more potential for sag than the other choices, particularly the butt hinge. Just curious, thanks!
Yes this is a no fixing no glue build. I didn’t use either as not needed and def would not add strength as the forces here are going through the tenons. Given offsets used in the joinery there is no chance of parts coming apart. On the hinge as I said I wanted the hinge to be internal and have wall clearance adjustment. The hinge I went for provides both the aesthetic qualities I wanted and wall projection adjustment for clearance. Sag was known issue and wire guy line is IMO an elegant solution here. If I had gone for the most basic design possible it wouldn’t have been satisfying for me or probably got the interest from others. Hope that helps.
My shop is super small so will struggle with space for a shapoko unfortunately. I might be able to make a smaller CNC bed work. Have been looking at Workbee…
The best wood design yet 👍. But I wonder why no one is just bending a 3/4 piece of EMT? $20 with the straps to connect it to a French cleat rig. If it’s extra long, one could even use the cable option to suspend it farther.
Lots of routes for improvement for sure. My shop is pretty small so only needs a 3ft wall projection. Also no metal working tools so buying hardware felt sensible to me at the time.
I, like you have looked at all the same videos with the need in mind for an effective, efficient solutions to power hand tool dust extraction over my assembly table. I have taken your idea and expanded on it by adding lighting underneath, a compressed air hose that runs along the side of the vacuum hose and a switch that automatically turns on the vac when power is turned on when operating tools. The length of my arm is 1370mm. Can I ask how long your arm is? It looks to be about 1200mm? Aside from this I really enjoyed your video and the way you approached the project. Well done!
Just FYI it’s pronounced “swaje” not “swag”. Nice boom, I feel like the ultimate boom arm would have a retracting coil system for the hose and cable. This looks very functional and not too time consuming to build though. It’s super helpful to see things like the pivot alignment problem before trying to bash out a build like this for myself, thanks for the video 👍
Cute boom arm but too heavy for what it does. I made mine from a 1" EMT pipe. Bent a 45 deg at 36" on both ends. Ran a 12 awg extension cord with 3 outlets inside the pipe. Attach the vac hose on the pipe with velcor strap. It swivel freely on 2 baltic birch L-shape french cleat with lock for stability. Took me less then 1 hour to built and cost me under $40 including the pipe, extension cord and velcro strap. Take 2 minutes to move it if needed.
Nice. I wasn’t going for the fastest build. Instead I was going for a mix of form and function as will be in the background of my videos. If I had had 12mm ply that would have been lighter but the weight also stops the arm from swinging around too much which I like.

I think you need to offer the CNC files unrelated to the shaper. Most people don't own a shaper and its not something I would want. But I do own a CNC and would gladly purchase the files just to save the time.
Thanks and good suggestion. Not familiar (yet) with CNC file setup. What would be the file format that you need? Am thinking about getting a CNC bed also so this might be a place to start!
@garrydye2394 the files on the link are .svg files, technically you can use them on your CNC, however .DXF might be better for some users. I hope this helps?

A very nice build but is 18mm ply not overkill for the arm? With your design would 12mm not have been plenty strong enough and significantly lighter? (And cheaper).
Totally agree with you. Ideally side pieces 12mm for sure. Most of the weight comes from the wood. However I only had 18mm on hand. If you try then for sure 12mm!
The attention to the engineering concerns, design and outcome are great. The issue that stood out to me is the amount of overkill you managed to cram into this project is impressive. Your constraints unnecessarily imposed unnecessary complication, effort, tool sofistication and cost to the project. It seemed like two six foot lengths of electrical conduit, a large nut and bolt with some zip ties could have provided the same functionality. What is wrong with using cable ties?
Over-engineering is my thing where design and form usually trump base level practicality. For me in all my projects even shop projects form is as important as function. I appreciate that is not for everyone. That isn’t my continent goal either.
Great presentation, great explanation, great project!!!! I'm glad you chose not to use the world "ultimate" because that word has become bastardized on TH-cam. I have seen projects that looked like a three year old child on a sugar high put it together and called it "ultimate", and I've also seen some projects that look like they belong in a museum instead of the commoner's workshop, and the builder probably had to take out a second mortgage on their home to build it. What might be ultimate for one person, might not serve any purpose for another. If you can upload videos this well thought out and put together with fewer than 1000 subscribers, I can't wait to see the quality of your videos when you kit 100K subscribers!!!!!!!

"No cable" ties"? Hey, if you like perfection I suppose no one can contribute much to what you want. For the rest of us, perfection is just a little too expensive, both in money and time - given that baltic birch is almost unobtainable where I live, and time is too precious in how I need live. Just me, doing mine, so...good for you...
I’m not being prescriptive here. Any plywood would be fine and if you want to make the most cost effective and fastest version possible then the Lincoln street woodwork build is probably the one for you 👍🏻.

I need to occasionally remove debris from the coupling but otherwise I do not think there is much loss in suction.

Yes the arm itself is 1000mm but with the bracket and cleat the wall projection is approx 1200. Glad you liked it 🙌

Amazon in the UK. Here we call it a hook and eye strap or gate strap. Adjustable is essential.
