    I can't stand playing emulators on a cell phone... Nothing beats real hardware and nice physical controls.

      touch controls are cancer and external bluetooth controllers are a pain; not to mention so many emulators have a fixed touch control overlay :X

    NGPC is awesome but I love Wonderswan crystal. WC is super light , has many games and great battery life (especially using a Lithium AA). That said NGPC stick control is the best part.

      Someone was selling an R-Zone at a local game store with everything. The plastic reflective piece, the headset, the controller, the cable, and I think a game or two. It was in a bin of stuff that said "3 dollars".
      I did not get it. I am glad I did not get it. lmao

    When you consider the cost of retro games $100 for a flash cart really isn't much. You get a few games for that price these days and with a flash cart, unless you're a collector, you essentially get every game that's been released for the system. I wish the flash cart for the NeoGeo MVS was that cheap, but I will probably get it when I have the time to get into NeoGeo stuff again and finish my consolization of one.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on what type of gamer/collector you are... I like to own things so most of the good and/or common games I'd probably buy anyway, which means for me a flash cart is just to pick up either the impossible to find games or the crappy games I wouldn't otherwise buy. (Also, the NGPC has a very small library overall.) It could still be worth it just to play those rare games on real hardware, but often rare games aren't the greatest, they're just rare. I will say I'm having fun playing Densha de Go, which I didn't even realize was available on this system before!

    Also, there's been more flashcarts than the Neo Geo Pocket SD. Like, way more, and way before. For example, the Flash Masta which has been around for yonks.

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I love it! In 2002 I had the silver B&W NGP. I only had one game and it was Samurai Shodown 2. It was such a bad ass cute game. It got me through my first morning class in high school. In my first year of collage I bought a NGPC with Fatal Fury. It was great. It was a little bigger then the NGP B&W. I had more great memories with the NGP B&W. Thank you for this video. It made me happy just to see the Metal Slug game play. If you can find one, you should play a GamePark 32. It was the second handheld that I had. It played Doom 1 & 2 at full speed and had great emulators. The GP2X was awesome as well.

    this flash cart is something anyone with a little patience and basic programming knowledge can make. did you notice the cart is 3D printed? it's so easy these days to print something plastic in whatever shape you need. for this cart you basically just need to take any existing game for the system , desolder the cart's ROM and replace it with an EEPROM, solder in a card reader, and then write a small routine that runs from the EEPROM and brings up the text menu when you boot the system. the routine will fetch the file you tell it to get and flash it onto part of the EEPROM's remaining space. put it in a 3D printed cart (made from scanning an existing cart's dimensions), laser color print a label and done

      Not a good option for one of these. The new screens are smaller and I have not seen a yellow surround available for any of them. But even if one were available, the screen on this thing is small enough as it is. I'll give up the backlight for a few more mm.

    • @DavideNastri
      @DavideNastri 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ModernClassic
      I do understand your concern but when you see the difference you stop caring about the millimeters lost.
      The only problem would be the screen color, I agree...
      The difference is stunning:

    I truly love playing on original hardware when possible, but the older I get, and the worse my one good eye gets the more I need a backlit screen so on this case emulating on my Android phone with a MOGA Gamepad is the way to go for me, but none the less great video. :-)

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The lack of backlight is not as easy to deal with as I remember, but I just could never give up these controls as long as I have a choice. I'd play blindfolded. I'd play with the system off and just make up the game in my own head :)

    How has the flashcart held up for you? I'm real interested in it and wondering how you feel after a few months with it.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The flash cart itself has held up fine. What hasn't held up quite as well is just the NGPC's library, which is smaller than I think even I realized, and maybe not quite as good as I had remembered. I played through a bunch of games for a while after buying the cart, then put it away and haven't touched it since then. So it just depends on how big a fan of the NGPC you really are. But the flash cart itself does what it's supposed to do really well.

    I like original hardware as well, it's prone to less bugs and the bugs that are there have better workarounds. I dislike the emulation especially for this system, all the sound and speed are messed up.

    I guess they use 16MB flash and 1MB is reserved for file menu overhead. It is a shame they did not use 512MB flash as that would have more than held every game ever made.

    To some degree I disagree with your price analyses. I feel that, while a flash cart is a lot of money up front, the savings in versus buying each game on its own makes it a valuable resource for someone simply looking to play games on original hardware. Someone could easily buy a Gameboy Colour with an everdrive for less than $200 and never have to spend a dime more while playing every game for the console.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, it wasn't really an "analysis", it's just that $100 is not a small amount of money for an older handheld. If I really did want to do an analysis, I'd look at the games that are really good for the system - it has a pretty small library - and add up the cost of buying them, assuming you'd really do that. You can get most of them for $5-$10. But again, that jibes with what I said about these things being for really hardcore fans - most people don't buy every good game for any system, they buy a few and are content with that. So it's still only worth the money to people who are really into it.
