Very informative, Thank you Adam.
No problem bro! Glad it was helpful.
wow, that is along sword. But as you say, smaller Japanese in the movie "47 Ronin" used the nodachi swords. So they developed the correct body movements to make it work for them. Awesome ! Thank you for this video.
+triumphmanful When I was talking about the 47 Ronin I was actually talking about the real 47 Ronin although the movie was awesome. 33 out of the 47 Ronin's sword blade length were actually documented before they committed seppuku. No problem, thanks for watching!
Very informative, thank you !
formidable blade I think you motivated me to finally take the plunge on the odachi
Thanks! I actually got influenced to used the Nodachi when I was reading about people like the 47 Ronin, Sasaki Kojiro and some other average size Japanese practitioners using sword around this size or longer that make me say to myself "hey, if those guys can do that than I should be able to do it too". Before this sword I was using a sword with a 31" blade. Now I love using the longer blades and look forward to trying more of them out in the future. Thanks for watching!
I agree, as a taller fellow about your height i recognize the advantages of a longer blade. at the same time i'm not against two kodachi :D
Useful, i am a medieval martial artist my style is 2 handers and ive taken a liking to german greatsword fighting but ive been wanting to make my own fighting style and to do that i gotta branch out, so i got a nodachi on the shorter side as thats what im used to (more mobility that way) so thanks for the info it will help me more easily grasp the style which will make it easier for me to mix the 2 styles.
awesome! 👏
+AlienGoBoom thanks!
Thanks for sharing
No problem! Thanks for watching.
I really love this! I've recently begun the study and practice of this Way of swordsmanship, and the Nodachi has caught my eye. Are there any recommendations you could make to someone looking for a nodachi of similar size?
+Gordon Greene thanks! I've always loved the Nodachi, it's just an awesome and unique weapon don't get me wrong I love using Katana but the longer blades r just more fun. What style of Iai r u studying? The sword I'm using in the video is the Shinwa Odachi which is a really nice sword after u do some work to it (shortening the tsuka) and I did a review on this sword if ur interested in hearing what I think of it th-cam.com/video/eS_vwRR-HqE/w-d-xo.html. Ryan sword makes some Nodachi and while I've never handled any of their Nodachi I have handled several of their swords (including one they sent me just lately for review that has a 33.5" blade) and the balance on their swords is pretty good.
I adore the Nodachi, I stand at 5'11 so I hope I am within an acceptable height range without being handicapped, but I currently study Katori Shinto-Ryu, Niten, Enmei, and a mixture of a few other philosophies and styles. I have trained in martial arts and sword play since I was 4, only now I am able to purchase and maintain my own weapons. I would love to send you a message some time with a few questions regarding the technique of the Nodachi, as I may end up ordering the Shinwa for myself. I plan on doing all the refitting and sizing necessary, so your videos will help greatly.
+Adam Novath the Shinwa Odachi also requires repositioning the Kurigata to be good for Iai in my opinion because it has too much space between the Kurigata and koiguchi but after fixing the length of the tsuka, rewrapping the tsuka and repositioning the Kurigata I think it's an awesome sword for the price.
I like to have my Kurigata higher up, almost resting near my pinky and the edge of my palm.
+Gordon Greene same here. At most I like it touching on the very outer portion of my palm but no more than that otherwise it's too much space. I've had to reposition the Kurigata on a few of my swords because of this.
You are super 😁 men how can training whit a long nodachi i think buy two i colecting katanas i have many for 3 years and now decide buy nodachis 😁
Thanks!! Lol. Part of it is I’m just tall so that helps (I’m 6’2”) and I have long arms. I’ve seen shorter people use nodachi as well but generally speaking taller people are able to use them easier. You really have to have your technique down when using a nodachi though. I had years of using katana before trying to use a nodachi and that definitely helped.
@adam what's you're opinion on using the nodachi with the quick draw style of Aiajutsu? (Hope I spelled it right.) A video response would be cool too.
That’s what I’m actually talking about for part of the video. I’m 6’2” and I can use the nodachi for Iaijutsu although there is a length limit with the way the system I learned is. Some styles of Iaijutsu actually were created for use with the nodachi but some systems would never allow the use of nodachi. Not all styles of Iaijutsu are the same.
yes I have real been looking forward to this video hi if it ok can you all so make a video on eishin ryu footwork like tai sabaki and ashi sabaki
and thank you so much for the video
+Shiv samurai glad it was helpful :-) sorry it took me so long to get to it, I did it once but I wasn't happy with it so I redid it. I'll see what I can do on footwork. Thanks for the video requests, I love being able to make videos on things ik people want to see. If u have any other requests let mk. Yw
+Adam Novath thanks for watching!
Why did I just find your channel just now?
I fell in love with the nodachi ever since I played Shogun Total War. (The older one, not the remake). It's such a massive sword that delivers a lot of death & destruction. I tried to read more about it & apparently it lost popularity right after the Sengoku Jidai mostly because it's too long? Sad, but understandable, even you demonstrated how much of a hassle it could be when you sheath & unsheathe the blade.
But I'm always curious, with the tradition of sheathing & unsheathing, does accidentally cutting yourself common?
But between a katana & a nodachi, which 1 do you prefer? From what I understand, katana is mostly a secondary weapon, so what would be your primary weapon? A hinawaju?
So... do these tips do one any good if they hold the sword backwards a la Sephiroth?
Probably not. Keep in mind a lot of things in anime and video games don't apply to real world which is why in a lot of cases proper replicas are so hard to make. A sword like Sephiroth was never used historically, there are some surviving examples of swords that big but they were prayer offerings not battlefield weapons because they would have been way too heavy for a single man to use let alone using it with 1 hand like Sephiroth does. Supposedly there were swords that were used by 2 men but I have never seen any real evidence of that and if so it would be used against cavalry just holding the blade horizontal while the horse charges into the blade.
So far surviving nodachi that were actually used in battle generally don't even have 5' blades let alone what is usually taller than Sephiroth in the blade alone excluding the tsuka (handle). Also making such a sword was not easy. In reality if you want something that long that is usable a yari or naginata would be the better choice.
Using a sword in reverse grip is mainly for shorter blades, the bigger the blade gets the more awkward it becomes to use in reverse grip and in my opinion it at some point makes less sense to use in reverse grip.
so is there a difference between a nodachi and an odachi or are they the same thing? I'm planning on buying an odachi soon
To my knowledge there is no different, just different terms for the same thing. “Nodachi” means “field sword” as opposed to Odachi which simply means “great sword” or “big sword”.
Awesome, which odachi are you looking at?
Adam Novath Much appreciated, and the Odachi is just for looks, it's from a company called Kolourco and it's made of tempered stainless steel, so it's nothing truly worthy of cutting. It was only $94 too
Ok, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that company. I’m hoping that one day there will be more options in the market for nodachi. I actually just got done posting a video of the grim reaper theme I gave the sword in this video, I ended up breaking the tsuba so I made a tsuba and have the sword a new theme.
Adam Novath wow, you made tye tsuba? That's sounds reslly interesting. Also Kolourco is a really good online store to buy knives, swords, axes and a bunch of other really crazy weapons like knuckle tasers. You should check it out
Yes, I made the tsuba, Steel kurigata and horn kojiri for that sword. Menuki were made from a set of conchos. I really thought outside of the box and wanted to make most of the fittings or make them out of something. Looking at their website right now, kinda reminds me of budk. Looking right now and I think I just saw a knife on there for $20 that my brother bought himself for $60 lol not sure if I should tell him about that. I’ll look around on there more later but looks like there is some stuff I’d be interested in.
hello, i want to buy one of this. can you tell me if it is a real damascus steel?
Blades that are Damascus steel now a days r typically either folded, twisted, or have a pattern put in the steel then dipped in acid to bring out the pattern. The historic Damascus steel unfortunately has been lost to time. This one seems to be the Damascus kind that is acid dipped as I described, the blade finish hasn't worn off or anything and I do use this sword a lot. Not sure if you've watched it but I also did a review on this sword th-cam.com/video/eS_vwRR-HqE/w-d-xo.html. Thanks for watching!
im going to wach it right now! tks for answer me
No problem! Hope the video helps.
What nodachi dimensions would you recommend for someone who is 5' 8"?
Unfortunately there is no set guide really. The answer is it really depends on your experience level, the style you study, how you plan on using it, etc. I study an iaijutsu style that isn't really designed to use the nodachi so as a result I have to be able to draw and resheath the blade at my waist with either foot forward using it like a big katana so I prefer a 3 shaku blade which is also the same length Sasaki Kojiro used as well. If you are just going to cut from with it without doing nuketsuke and not then length isn't as critical but either way its better to have a background in the katana before going to a nodachi.
@@StudentOfWarCustoms Thanks
Tip #1
Dont use it in self defense because its a battlefield weapon
2: youre probably having a nodachi because you hate horses, that already tells me who you are ;)
3. The one you have just seems like a really long tachi, although i dont see the point in a long tachi when you can just a polearm for cheaper making and easier fix/replacement.
1. For most I agree, this is a shorter nodachi so it’s not so bad but generally yes more of a battle field weapon.
2. Lol nope actually I like horses I just want to keep my kimono nice and clean, with a katana I gotta get close to the opponent and get blood on me. Do you have any idea how hard it is to remove bloodstains!?!? Lol
3. Long Tachi is basically what a nodachi Is, odachi means “great Tachi” and nodachi means “field Tachi”. The nodachi length I use is actually the same as the nodachi that was used by Sasaki Kojiri it just looks more normal for me because I’m 6’2”, if used by a shorter person it would look longer. This size is pretty much what many consider the minimal length for a nodachi.
What was the length of that nodachi?
35 1/4” blade and about 16 1/4” handle at that time. I have shortened the handle down a bit more since then. I’ve shortened that handle on that sword 3 times.
Where you get the sword your using in the video?
That is my Shinwa Odachi I bought from trueswords.com. I have heavily customized mine though so if you buy one and want it like mine you will have to add the price of customizing into the price of the sword.
I Begin first with katana than I Will have a nodachi or odachi !
+Damien DM that definitely helps as well. For me I was using Katana and some slightly longer than normal katana for 6 years before trying to use the Nodachi.
@@StudentOfWarCustoms hey i have a question what fighting form do you use for the nodachi and correct me if im wrong but judging from the background do you practice aikido
collin Nicolazzo I practice Muso Jikiden Eishin ryu. I am 6’ 2” and have long arms so being that tall I can just use my nodachi like it’s a big katana which is pretty much how I use it.
That dojo did teach aikido and I tried it for a while but it wasn’t a good match for me and by the time of the video I had been long out of aikido.
@@StudentOfWarCustoms ok thank you this was helpful but ive never heard of what you practice is it a smaller art form and can you tell more about your martial art
When you say don't start out with a nodachi that's 4 feet long...do you mean the blade?
Correct. I'm 6'2" and personally I think a nodachi with a 3 foot blade like mine is pretty much perfect. Short enough that it's not too short but long enough that it still has reach advantage over a katana.
But even if you want to use a 4 foot blade it's best to start with a shorter blade, get used to that and then move up to the 4 foot blade.
@@StudentOfWarCustoms I'm 5,7 and I've wanted to get a nodachi for a while. What measurements would you recommend?
Do you have any background with the katana? If not I recommend starting with a katana, get good with a katana and then proceed to a 3 foot blade nodachi. 3 feet is pretty much the shortest a nodachi can be but it's still long enough that you get a good amount of reach over a standard katana.
If you're fine with just a long katana instead of a nodachi then a shorter blade would probably be better but you really have to use a katana first to find out. If you don't have a basis with the katana it is possible to use a nodachi but will be much more difficult.
And if you don't have a bokken then you should really get a bokken first. Inexpensive and really a bokken is an invaluable training tool for learning swordsmanship.
@@StudentOfWarCustoms I've used a bokken since the lockdown and I feel pretty comfortable with it.
@@StudentOfWarCustoms Should I get a slightly larger o katana then?
So why would that sword be a nodachi instead of an o-katana?
As far as I know o-katana isn't really a historic term, nodachi is a historic term. I've never seen a Koryu system that used the term o-katana.
@@StudentOfWarCustoms i forgot to reply lol
I had not known that o-katana was not a historic term, but after doing a little digging it seems you are correct.
This makes me wonder if o-dachi & nodachi were originally considered different length swords but over time became interchangeable.
Regardless thanks for the clarification!
@Asa-Punk at Suðri Vinlanð It's all good lol.
As far as I know they were always terms for the same thing but you never know. When you translate odachi it just means "big sword", "long sword" or "great sword" and who's to say what is considering a "long sword" since it could be that sword is long in comparison to the average sword. I will say on average I believe most swords used during times of war were longer than what is left now. Interestingly 33 of the 47 Ronin's swords were actually documented and the majority were longer than what is now considered an average katana length.
@@StudentOfWarCustoms interesting that so many of the 47 Ronin had longer swords.
It is also interesting that so many commercial katana today have an almost standard blade length, 48" from the guard closer to 47" from the habiki, especially considering surviving swords are not so standardized.
@Asa-Punk at Suðri Vinlanð Yep! Another thing thats interesting is they were using that after the josun laws were put into effect which restricted what blade length samurai could have down to 27.4" on their katana. This is why modern swords are generally so short but ya I'm not a fan of how short most modern swords are. They aren't great for taller guys like me lol I'm 6'2".
Would you please kindly inform us of what ryu you belong to : ) ?
+Ken Epee sure, I study Muso Jikiden Eishin ryu.
Thank you very much. There's a branch dojo of your ryu in Jakarta, Indonesia. Perhaps one day you can come and train there.
+Ken Epee no problem! Perhaps. I live in the USA though so it's pretty far for me but if I'm ever over there I'll definitely train with them.
+Ken Epee they're not the same branch of Muso Jikiden Eishin ryu but I would train with them if I could.
The SKA
do you have nodachi
where can i get nodachi
how much does it cost
Yes, the sword I'm using in the video is a Nodachi. The one I'm using in the video is the Shinwa Odachi which u can buy through trueswords.com for under $250 and some other websites have it too, if you do plan on buying a Shinwa Odachi I highly recommend that u watch my review on it th-cam.com/video/eS_vwRR-HqE/w-d-xo.html it's a pretty good sword as long as ur willing to do some work to it but I go into more of that in the review. Ryansword.com also sells Nodachi which I can easily recommend as great swords u can use out of the box and they can customize it for u for and the price for Ryan sword Nodachi start around $220+shipping. If you're interested in more videos on the Nodachi I will be posting more on the Nodachi this year.
