📽 📽 IN THIS WEEK'S VIDEO: We compare two 12 year bourbons from legacy Kentucky distilleries in a completely double blind head-to-head tasting. Knob Creek 12 is fairly easy to find in most markets while 1792 Aged 12 Years is very difficult to find in almost every market. Is 1792 Aged 12 Years worth the hunt or is Knob Creek a suitable substitute?

Josh - you 10000000% nailed it on not expressing what you are guessing a bottle is - it totally detracts from the blind tasting. I've given that feedback to other channels as an improvement suggestion - well done!!

I, too, have given that same feedback to other channels about guessing. Several times.
There's another channel -- think they're the #2 channel out there now in terms of subscribers -- where the guy can't help himself from guessing. I've been watching that channel a lot less.
And to top it off, he usually guesses *wrong* ! It makes a savvy viewer skeptical about the validity of his tasting notes knowing that he's "guessing in his head" as he's going along.

The entire Knob Creek lineup is climbing up the ranks with me. Good proof, different age options, offering both rye and bourbons along with single barrels. I don't have enough experience with 1792, but I like what I have had. Good matchup. Cheers!

I had a super fun idea if you guys were making it to the Junkies Pours in the Park this year. Have a booth, have a blind sample. Have slips of paper and a big jar so everyone could guess what it was and their top 3 notes they were getting off it. Maybe small prizes like a hat or T shirt from Stuff and Whiskey if anyone guessed it, then take all the notes and put them in a word cloud, then you could discuss the word cloud on a later episode or hop on a live stream with Dan and Sean and break it down. I think it'd be fun and spread your channel a bit. Oh, also. Love the Knob 12 way more than the 1792. Never really understood what people loved 1792 for. Just super banana on the nose for me and meh on the palate. Cheers!

So........do you think that had you tasted the 1792 before the KC, that your notes and rankings would be different?
The KC12 is definitely more widely available than the 1792 in my market. The entire KC lineup is much more available, whereas I really have a hard time finding anything other than 1792 SmB, and even that is somewhat hard to find. I do have a 1792 Full Proof store pick which is deliciously delicious, but thats about it........... I have more empty KC bottles in my recycle bin than I have 1792 bottles on my shelf. As a brand category and for availability, age stated, and price, the KC's just cant be topped. Cheers and once again a great review!

Great question. No, because during the mid-video break we take a lot of time to clear our palates and start with the second glass just in case the order in which we taste has a large influence. No matter which way we went on these two, they made each other worse. Really great question again and thanks for watching!

I LOVE Knob Creek 12yr, but had a devil of a time finding it... until it showed up in Target for about $60, at which point I promptly bought the two bottles on the shelf!
I also lucked into a dusty 1792 12yr for about $50 at a small mom & pop liquor store, but don't like it as much - similar tasting notes as what you all came up with.

Right on! You just created my Friday night blind but from memory the KC 12 has a nice balance of sweet and oak but the 1792 was over-oaked for me. Both product lines are fantastic values in the current market with 1792 FP being the best IMO. And I never mentioned this but I love your methodology... I do blinds on a regular basis and have to fight the fact that I recognize the flavors of each most times... I need to set myself up like that.

Thanks for tuning in! We had a series of videos that are compiled into a playlist called Wildcard Wednesdays and several Japanese whiskies came up within that series. We'd love to add that series back into the channel content rotation but a fourth video a week is a bit too much editing and drinking with our family and work schedules. We have dabbled with the idea of incorporating international blind samples into our Pours Unknown blind pool for Monday videos though, so it's a possibility.

Great matchup. I have the knob creek 12 year for a lower price of 54.99 and I have seen it for as low as 44.99 in NY. I have never seen the 1792 12 year in the wild though. The KC 12 is a great pour. I have also had the rest of their lineup, although the standard KC 9 is lackluster to me (the 9 at 120 proof is another matter). As for Barton, Ive had their single barrel and some of the offshoots (Calumet, Lucky 7, Sam Houston) and they have been delicious as well. If I see a 12 year 1792, near its MSRP, I will pick one up. In the meantime, that Knob creek 12 is where it is at.

I’m new to bourbon and there are only 3 that I REALLY like and can drink every day, pipe dream, OF 1910 and WR double oaked. Any other recommendations you may think I’ll like based off those 3? Thanks in advance!!

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Michter's US*1 Small Batch would be a great one to try in the same proof range. 1910 and WRDO are really two cream of the crop 90ish proof bourbons though so you're going to be hard pressed to find anything better--it'll just be different. We'd suggest working your way up the proof ladder a bit and trying some fuller flavored pours in the 100-110 proof range that will pack the flavor concentration of 1910 and WRDO with a longer finish and fuller body. Keep an eye out for anything double barreled too as you seem to like that note (and we do too).

First and most important question: Are those Glen trays one piece?
Now I have enjoyed your channel for a long time but I think it's unfair that you guys get to try all this excellent whisky but we don't. Therefore I think you should send out samples so we can join in the fun. Vice-a versa, when we send you samples we should send enough for sharing.

@@stuffandwhiskey Reminds me of this. 🙂 A young man was walking along one of Southern California's sandy beaches with his surf board. He suddenly spots this bottle which has recently washed up on the beach. It's obvious it's been tossed around for a long time. He picks up the bottle and notices that it still has the cork intact. So, being curious as to what may be inside, he manages to get the cork out and out pops a Genie.
After expressing profound appreciation for having been let out of the bottle, the Genie grants his benefactor the classic, "one wish" and it will be yours. Being an avid surfer, it doesn't take him long to say,
"I've always wanted to surf Hawaii, but I get seasick on ships and I'm afraid to fly. Would you build me a bridge to Hawaii?"
      The Genie replies:
"Do you know what you are asking for? Do you know how long the bridge would have to be? Think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking. The supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific! The concrete and steel it would take! It will nearly exhaust several natural resources. And the maintenance of that bridge! No, think of another wish."
The man said OK and tried to think of a really good wish. Finally, he said,
"I wish that I could understand women ... know how they feel inside and what they're thinking when they give me the silent treatment ... know why they're crying, know what they really want when they say nothing ... know how to make them truly happy ... I really want to understand women and how they think!"
After a long sigh, the Genie responds:
"Would you like that bridge with two lanes or four?"
