    I almost never take gyro gunsights, having to worry about making sure the distance and target size is set correctly just annoys me when i could simply walk the tracers in with a standard gunsight. Most of the time I find that the gyro is offset from the target when a straight pointing sight would at least let me know where the shots are gunna go.

    • @ToreDL87
      @ToreDL87 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use slider on throttle quadrant to adjust for distance, and buttons to adjust wingspan, that way you can easily and continually adjust it as distances vary.
      Good rule of thumb of any dynamic gunsight (be it gyro or radar) is to assume shots fall short, so lead a bit more, then walk it in, and as shots start hitting simply guide it in from there with stick & rudder control based solely on impacts.

  • @Boslandschap1
    @Boslandschap1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm not a fan of the gyro gunsight, be it the Allied or the German version. You (understandibly) can't count on the crosshairs indicating where the bullets will land and still need to compensate for various factors besides the inherent inaccuracy. For me, I find the gyro gun sights end up being a higher mental load than using the fixed gun sights. It probably would get easier if (like a true wartime pilot), you only fly one plane, but in IL2 I will fly everything and as a result it is easier to train good reflexes with fixed cross hairs I find.
    BTW, nice fights. Brave to get into a fight against two P-51's when already low on fuel. Very nice scissors at the end, though I think I would have cut the throttle to help the P-51 overshoot. Given that you were low and his friend was not too far behind it is unlikely that that would have changed the end result btw, but maybe it could have prevented some hits.

    • @mephstacticalreview9329
      @mephstacticalreview9329  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cutting throttle is never good, even if you are in 1:1 and usually deadly in 2 vs. 1…

    • @Boslandschap1
      @Boslandschap1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@mephstacticalreview9329 I wouldn't go as far as saying "Never": I have had succes with it and arguably it facilitated your scissors opponent in putting some bullets into you in the video, which generally doesn't help the situation.
      From 12:30 on, you and your opponent seem to be struggling to manoeuver so that the other ends up in front of their guns, which your opponent *very* narrowly succeeds in at some moments, which allows for some snap shots. As soon as your engine quits at around 13:05-ish your opponent does end up in front of you, even though you are manoeuvring actually less due to receiving some shots from his wingman, suggesting that your loss of speed rather than different/better manoeuvring contributed to that. I could imagine that surprising your opponent could have lead to a (somewhat lucky) quick elimination of the first opponent, leaving your full attention to address the challenge of his upcoming wingman, without the need to having to fight two opponents simultaneously (just ridiculously short term serially :)
      Clearly, in general and other equal, more energy = better, more possibilities, etc. However, given that the throttle is a power setting rather than a on/off switch is already an indication that maybe there is an optimal setting for each given situation, which is contrary to terms like "never" I would say, arguably this may be one of them.
      To be clear: I'm not trying to say something cheap like "you made a mistake" or "you should (simply) have...", only wanted to share my considerations. The situation was very dangerous as it was and you'd probably only gotten away if the opposition was very novice or outright incompetent. Besides that, it can be seen in many of your videos that you have a pretty good understanding of what you ar doing. Keep up the good work 👍

    I wish it had the mustang gyro in the dead center instead of off to the right. After the war when the americans got there hands on a few doras, they put high octane fuel and made them run on our standards, i think they even may have put a mustang gyro in one. Anyway they outperformed anything we had. I think even the k-4 did aswell when they gave it better fuel. You can look this up its fact, the dora when the americans got there hands on them and made them run on the fuel our planes ran on, the doras performed amazingly.

I do know that the dora's were supposed to be manufacutured with a rubber gasket piece that went somewhere in the engine, and it made it run alot better and increased aero. Info on this gasket piece is out there kurt tank talks about it, it was some rubber component that they forgot to install, the plane made due without it somehow i guess. But i think they got all the notes and had one running proper with the rubber gasket, made some changes where they could they might of bored out or milled certain areas of the engine, idk, the amount of specifications is really unknown. The german engines ran with 3 valves per cylinder, american engines were running on 4, we were confused why the germans were doing this but this was the case with the Jumo, it had 3 valves for each cylinder, were later models planning on having 4 idk but probably.

    It is curious that you have installed the cumbersome EZ 42 gyroscopic sight, manufactured by Askania & Zeiss on the Fw 190-D9 ss far I understood it was never fitted on this airplane! It was apparently used operationally only on some of the Me 262A of the famous 8.8 JV44 that was based at München-Reim, outside Munich. That said this EZ 42 sight proved unpopular and ineffective with pilots and required continued twisting, by the pilot, on the range finding button. Finally this heavy gunsight was about over 268 mm long, 196 high and 114 large so basically there was no space to install it on the Fw 190-D9.....

    • @mephstacticalreview9329
      @mephstacticalreview9329  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      About 800 EZ42 have been produced, there are documented examples of these being installed to D-9s during production and some dispatched to units to be installed in the field. It would definitely fit 190 cockpit. 109 was too small, but 262 also used these in addition to Ta-152, Do-335.

      @@mephstacticalreview9329 Thanks for replying! I've checked better the "story" of the EZ 42 sight and I confirm that it was produced around 800 units but officially only around 200 of them was distributed to the the Fw 190-D9 units and the Me 262A as well but doesn't mention the Ta 152H-1 or the Do-335 but I can confirm that there is one photo of the cockpit of the Do-335 B-2 prototype fitted with the EZ 42. In other words there are some photos of Me 262A that it can clearly see the EZ 42 but I never seen any pics on the Fw 190-D9 but it is quite possible because of chaotic final months of war! That said I apologise for my ignorance as I simply didn't know. Hope I didn't bore you 😴...

    You overshoot them alot, chopping back on the prop would of let u get alot of these kills, and u wulda had that last plane if u started shooting earlier and let him fly straight thru cannon and mg fire. Not bad tho. The one clear advantage besides gun placement the dora has on the mustang is its roll rate, learn to use it for evasive manuevers and get them to overshoot you. I used to 1v1 pilots on servers for hours and hours back in the day on il2. The dora is my favorite plane. Dont play the chase game with the mustang, ur both fast and have advantages in certain small areas, whoever utilizes those the most will usually win. One trick id always be able to do was bring a mustang down to the deck, start rolling feint a roll one way then go the other, before you knew it the mustang would overshoot.

      I haven’t flown late war 109 after the patch, but before Dora was more competitive due to later lock up on higher speeds. I feel that 190 are harder to master compared to 109, but in hands of experience pilot 190 are devastating. But if people don’t know what they are doing - you can kill them quickly. Same like Mustang drivers staring tight turning with 109 and dying in scores…

    • @rring44
      @rring44 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mephstacticalreview9329 It just seems to me that the Dora just is good, but not great in is speed, climb and turn. It doesn't have the speed to really run so you can chase it down. Also the Tempest/P51/Spit14 have a high enough dive so it can't just dive away. It can't just climb over people like the 109 and it can't turn very well so it can't win that way. It just seems to only be good at ambushing and that is about it.
      After the update, the 109s are just much better. They have a bit less climb and acceleration so you can't just disengage or climb over people with no effort, but they turn far better and have much better high speed roll and elevator authority. The devs made a mistake with the roll and at 700+kph, the 109 has a better roll than the 190. It seems that the 109 should be used more as a knife fighter like the Spitfire. You can easily out turn a Spit because you can just out G them since the engine is so powerful, it can keep you fast enough to black out the Spit.

      A gyro gunsight (G.G.S.) is a modification of the non-magnifying reflector sight in which target lead (the amount of aim-off in front of a moving target) and bullet drop are calculated automatically. The first examples were developed in Britain just before the Second World War for use during aerial combat, and more advanced models were common on Allied aircraft by the end of the war.
