I was first exposed to the abercrombie offshoot Ruehl 925 and their signature scent. They closed and allegedly rive gauche was spot on similar. I only could get the newer version which was underwhelming compared to the Ruehl signature. Abercrombie rereleased it at Batch 46 which they then cancelled. Comparing the two they are very similar except Rive Gauche feels like it stops at the heart notes with no basenotes. 46 has a woody musky drydown that’s wonderful. Id recommend trying to get a sample of that one. To me it actually smells better than RG but i never smelled the original.
Fine Accoutrements makes shaving soap, aftershaves and edts. The have an aftershave and edt called American Blend that smells very similar to Rive Gauche pour homme. Fairly cheap too. Great video
Awesome video Sebastian! Thanks so much! I do wonder why no modern clones of the ultimate barbershoppy fragrances. Have been interested in YSL RG, though have never smelled it. I wore Azzaro very long ago after my father, now I own (blind bought) Fougere Royale after your own recommendation :), such an awesome fragrance! Specially for right now, yet year-round versatile I think. Its chamomille note to me is very noticeable, yet soft and almost warm. Azzaro to me has something somewhat "rougher in the edges" as I remember we discussed in some comments in another of your videos. Either its star anis or the caraway not sure. I happen to have a little tester that I got for free when I got the Fougere Royale :) Might get a bottle at some point just for nostalgia´s sake, just as I might a Drakkar Noir at some point. Sartorial I like a lot, from paper strips both opening and drydowns I clearly liked it more than TF Beau du Jour. The latter smells nice too, but did not particularly picked my interest too much. One incredibly pleasant barbershoppy fragrance that I love is surprisingly inexpensive: Pinaud´s Clubman After Shave lotion. The smell immediately reminds me of actual traditional barbershops that I went to decades ago to get haircuts when I was a kid and teenager. Floral and powdery, yet super fresh and clean. The talc they applied back then on my neck after a haircut, and also some times the lotion instead of talc, I´m pretty sure it was Pinaud Clubman. Smells exactly the same today, in fact it caused a sort of "Ratatouille" travel-in-time effect when I finally got it and smelled it. I also have Pinaud´s Finest Powder, which smells a lot like the after shave. Easily it's the finest smelling talc I´ve ever smelled in my life.
There won't be any alternatives 🙁 the black shaving aluminium bottle was amazing. Sartorial, Beau de Jour, Azzaro pour homme, Fougere royale, Paco Rabanne pour homme and Bracken Man are very good still

At least I have Sartorial, Fougere Royale and Bracken Man (my favorite Amouage and my favorite springtime scent). It's still relatively easy to find in Europe, still available in the glass bottle from YSL french's website, and I've seen the canister bottle in multiple French airports.
It's interesting, I feel At The Barbers is very similar to Chanel Platinum Egoiste, even though I wouldn't consider PE a barbershop scent (it's not even classified as a Fougere).
All the fragrances mentioned in this list are superior to Rive Gauche. The fragrance that has garnered me the most complaints by a wide margin. There's a reason it flopped twice.

Their store brand fragrance of the same name smelled a lot like rive gauche I had both and for some reason in all these years that was the closest I had found but, they’ve discontinued that as well since the store closed in I believe 07. Anyone ever smelled reuhl no 925 for men?
Instant like - This is the video we needed! But no real replacement fragrance in the list... Azzaro is probably closest. Fougere Royal is like a totally different genre with its sparkly limey feel. Beau de jour is an awesome smell in its own right but no Rive Gauche. I was hoping for a revelation at the final tier so that I could instantly pick it up but I guess I'll have to keep hunting decants of Rive Gauche to keep me satisfied.
I really want to try Bracken man and Mousse Illuminee. Originally thought that Azzaro PH, BdJ, English Fern, Fougere Royale, Zino and Beach Hut Man would be enough, but there's me proven wrong. Not a fan of At the Barbers myself - too metallic on my skin - but superb performance on that one.

Phoenix artisan accouterments makes a product called CAD that they make in an aftershave as well as a perfume it’s extremely close to rive gauche with an added menthol note in the top. I believe he uses real oak moss as he is based in the United States. He makes dozens of other scents as well some of my favorites being Agharta and Good vibrations. Please check them out if you haven’t already

When you show Chanel Boy you put the wrong name on screen 😉 Sampled At The Barbar'ss and for me it smells like Hair Spray and as you said its very weak. Fougere Royal is great too. Love that fresh touch but not so potent. As Rive Gauge often get conspired to Barbar Shop style i wonder you don't showed The Tragedy of Lord George. Really felt in love with it but can not afford it. Maybe some cheaper alternatives to it? 🙏 Thanks for your great reviews
Hi Sebastian. Nice options. I just checked my collection comparing to the different Rive Gauche incarnations and Lolita Lempika Au Masculin (original formulation) has a similar vibe.
Even though i like Rive Gouche, i do prefer Azzaro pour homme much more. Its smoother and overall a better fragrance. Also Fougere D Argent is a beautiful modern barbershop fragrance that im liking more and more. Nice video Sebastian.
I own the light version and prefer it to the original. Its a tad more creamy and much fresher on the opening. An almost minty introduction - perhaps geranium. Little to no anise which is preferential for my taste. Its quite cold in feel, good for summer nights but perhaps missing some depth. I think its worth owning though if you own the original and can actually find a bottle.
Speaking of alternatives, I remember a fragrance from Hugo Boss called Boss Elements Aqua. Do you have it? And in that case, can you recommend any alternatives....
Sartorial got that damp and aged feel to it. Definitely not my favorite fougere, but different and artistic. Nicolai should blend Cuir Cuba with New York intense together.
I found the performance of the square bottle great...at least much much better than fougere royal. I find Azzaro ph very close, at least my 90s bottle.

Same from me Sebastian. Easily 8-10 hours and my skin tends to 'eat' all my fragrances, with the exception of this one, and Sartorial which is going even stronger on me.
I'm not all that familiar with Ysl with the exception of nobile leather & tuxedo. Do you you any recommendations to look into from Ysl? Sartorial is lovely , sampled it at a boutique near me. The rest it's great to learn about ☺

I just ordered the samples of Rogue. Glad I did cause I only like 3 of them mousse illuminee is ok. My favorite is faugerre l'aube.

Performance is extremely poor.
The scent is spot on but it's an after shave so it performs poorly. I wish they would make an EDT because they have the scent nailed

RazoRock American Barber is the same thing and it lasts 8h on my skin even if it's an after shave.

I have quite a few fragrance oils that mimic designer and niche houses. Most of them are so spot on, I don't recognize a difference. Thoughts?

Yep same here! I get 10 to 12 good hours from my La Collection bottle consistently. Have to save it for special occasions though. Irreplaceable.
