    Best piece of advise I've received in cards "sometimes you gotta buy what doesn't make any sense".
    I think that is very fitting for this episode and it matches my strategy of buying cards from the NBAs overlooked era.
    I'm digging deep into product history and pack odds to find rare overlooked cards.

    Happy to hear Geoff talking about his belief in vintage Signed cards. I've been preaching for a while about the small pop numbers in those signed cards. I think it's still an undervalued market but it is growing in popularity for sure. Thanks for bringing it up in this podcast!

      Yeah, especially if the specific person is now deceased. People would cherish signed items of their favourite sportsmen or women.

    SPORTS TICKET STUBS are so undervalued now and I think it will be absolutely HUGE in a few years! Especially the Autographed ones authenticated and graded by PSA. We will have a whole new generation that will have no idea what it's like to hold a physical ticket, its all digital. TICKET STUBS are relics of sports history and are close to being a "game-used" item as you can get.

    From the recent hype generated by video games , japanese version of pokemon cards, TCG and global appeal of soccer cards , one great play / investment could be the Panini SEGA WCCF football cards issued in Japan from 2001-2018. Arcade and football culture in Japan was huge with the 2002 WC so Panini in collaboration with SEGA came up with game cards to play with the WCCF arcade that were loaded with legends like Ronaldo, Zidane, Totti and later with young players like CR7, Messi , Ronaldinho Benzema etc. The problem with these cards is how condition sensitive the black backs and surface are and the abuse it got from playing the Arcade for several years. You could buy these cards for about a buck each at the time in Japan or Italy and the quality and selection of the product was off the charts and unmatched at the time with beautiful shiny prizm and gold foil look and awesome eye appeal. These could be the next in line to explode in value with Messi coming to the US and hype generated by 2026 WC !! Great topic / video. Keep up the good work …

    I think bowman chrome 1st image variations aren’t highly sought after right now but they have extremely low print runs and pop counts and should be more collectible based on their rarity.

    The only reason these cards or collectibles are valued so much from a monetary perspective is because of the fact that people didn’t take care of them and threw them into the ocean. Without these factors, the rarity and scarcity wouldn’t exist, and in turn the values would be significantly less. Imagine there were 1500 1952 mantle PSA 10s

    Its called value investing. I do it with Star Ken Griffey Jr rookie cards and various original photographs of players like Willie Mays. Many items like this are still very undervalued and overlooked.

    Regarding autographed vintage cards, I'm really wary of the authenticity especially for big name players. PSA has authenticated autographed cards that are clearly fake and well documented by the collecting community. Remember that it's just their opinion, not fact. Unless there's good provenance around the card and auto, I'm hesitant to spend hundreds or thousands on a vintage auto.

    1952 Topps is a landmark set, but three of the four reasons Geoff gave are incorrect: It is not the first set in color, it does not feature actual photographs (through previous sets from other companies did), and it is not even the first Topps set.

    Every card you listed that was made to be a collectable that has value. Have one thing in common, they have manufactured scarcity 1/1, /10, etc....Even with the manufactured scarcity only a very select few will have lasting value. 99% of the cards produced in the last 35 years will not maintain their value. In my opinion. Thanks for all of the time you put into putting out content. I really enjoy this programming for me, I enjoy the more educational content as opposed to the hype and strictly entertainment type stuff.

    Was big into collecting cards 30 years ago, I'm now 39 and have started collecting cards with my son, he loves it. Now being back in the hobby and watching these videos is interesting. I'm a real estate developer so I'm used to investing in income producing assets, but cards aren't that. From what I can see card "investing" is one giant group think exercise where a market just moves towards different segments (modern, vintage, etc) and everyone follows which drives prices, which to me makes it hard to see it as an investment. My son and I are enjoying trying to complete sets for fun but I do enjoy your videos and think its interesting to watch. Seems more like gambling to me than investing but everyone can do what they want with their money.

    star basketball wasn't printed in quantity because there was no demand; no one wanted them; how do I know, because I bought them in the 1980s at card show; and also 1980-81 basketball; not because I'm a great collector, but I could buy "more cards" for the same price of buying baseball cards; I just wanted card quantity, not price/card value; my PC at the time was Rickey Henderson, but Larry Bird was the neighborhood idol

    Now that everyone looks as cards as something of value, you will never see a 52 Topps set or 86 Fleer set story of it being worthless to being priceless.
    But that can still happen on a specific player who falls under the radar and becomes a great player. I’m not taking about Lebron because his cards were sought out the day they hit the market in 2003. I’m taking about Tom Brady, as who was hoarding his rookie cards in 2000 when Bledsoe was the starting QB? Who was hoarding Jokic cards in 2015?
    So now we can look back at Jokic values in 2015 when he was a 2nd round pick and say if I only bought his Prizm Silvers for how much?

    I think you’ve missed the point of the comment. All sports cards (yes including soccer), top shots, veefriends, etc are made as investments/collectibles at this point. Sure there may be unbalance between supply and demand which may cause the chances for prices to go up, but all these product are made with the thought someone will think they will go up in value. I interpret the comment as true collectibles that increase in value were items that were never intended to be collectible.

    I don't care what's valuable decades from now. I'll be irrelevant. I don't think I ever saw 86 Fleer packs when I was a kid or remember it being affordable. I think part of the Fleer story is a Myth. However I saw a Star BB Jordan, not one of the best cards, but it was $20. I really wanted it, but I wasn't sure if it was fake.

    I have a question for Geoff: I am going to do what I learned NOT to do while I was in the military and “ASSUME” that you take the time to read the comments posted on your videos! Given the ongoing situation with Ja Morant; do you cut your losses now, or do you buy while his card prices are going down? He has so much potential, but one cannot help but see a self-destructive pattern to his off-court behavior!

    • @itsgeoffwilson
      @itsgeoffwilson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi - it’s a good question. I like to be optimistic that Ja will turn his off court issues around and be a star in the league, so I’m a buy on him during the dip this summer.

      I would steer away from Ja, but that's just me though, there are plenty of other great young and upcoming players in basektball, baseball, football that don't have the concerning behavior to worry about.

    Geoff that was a terrible take on F1 having more long term sustainability than WWE. Please educate yourself on WWE fans and their habits. They are the most rabid merch buyers of any sport out there. At the moment they buy belts figures but there is an ongoing gradual shift over to sports cards.
    The fanbase is manic, they spend all day discussing the product and watching videos on the product. Seriously look that the media presence on TH-cam and Reddit.
    Also unlike most sports they COLLECT, if you look at the top WWE cards they are not being sold frequently. Aside from during the boom when the flippers came and went on key rookies but then show me a sport where that wasn't the case.
    My main point here is that WWE fans are made for cards, they already spend more on collectibles than any fanbase out there, that combined with a collect over flip tendency is really good for the long term viability of the space.
    I would love you to do a video researching WWE fans hardcore engagement with the sport, their spending on collectibles and how that may translate to cards given time.

    • @pt4563
      @pt4563 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, the global appeal comment. Just look at numbers WWE is doing internationally vs F1, it's not close.

Would probably help someone out for their years of hard work rather than what they would call plagiarizing in you were writing for a magazine but stinging bylines from a local store.
