    Watched your video on Talon 1, called a dealer and they were getting one in my size in a few weeks, so I put a deposit on it. Watched this video and gave them a call back asking if they might have Fathom 2 and they are getting the exact one as in this video next week! You got Giant quite a few clients with your videos!

      Funny you should mention that: I went to look at a Talon 2 29 (I had a 27.5), decided I would like the gear upgrades on a Talon 1, and the guy in the shop was of the opinion that once you start spending much more than Talon 2 money you should really start looking at the Fathom instead. Took it for a ride around the block and happily agreed with him.

    I own the black/rosewood '21 Fathom 2 and I absolutely love this bike. This bike loves to climb. Giant has had an issue with installing a non-boost chainring on some of these bikes, so if you are interested in buying one make sure there is an offset on the chainring or you will be miserable with chain drop. My 1st ride was horrible; chain drop about 20 times. I see that others had this problem on Giant's website reviews. Giant mailed a replacement ring, and my LBS installed a 32t for me so I could ride immediately, but I'm keeping it instead of the 30t replacement. This bike doesn't beat me up like other ht's I've owned, yet the frame has great lateral stiffness. That Crest fork is much better than I had hoped. Brakes were terrible at first, but after a few rides, they are not bad at all now. This bike checks all the boxes for me and it's a great value.

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that info. I will be on the lookout for chainring problems. I hope that they fix this on later production (Giant has been quite good in the past for resolving issues mid production ). Good to hear your thoughts on how the bike rides.

      Hi Larry
      I also have a 2021 fathom 2 and I’m the lowest gears with throw the chain when peddling hard. It’s very annoying. Is the revised sprocket obviously offset to look at or is it just a lip machined on the bac?Mine appears to be just flat. Otherwise great bike can’t fault it 👍

    • @larrymoore2571
      @larrymoore2571 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brockbarford1991 Hi Brock, yes you have the incorrect chainring installed if it is flat. The correct boost chainring will have a bulge inside the crank arm that will cure the problem with chain drop. Giant will ship the correct chainring to your local Giant dealer and pay for them to replace it.

    Picking up my Fathom 2 in two days based on this and a few other reviews on TH-cam praising the Fathom 2. I mostly do rails-to-trails, but was looking for a do it all bike that can do some more challenging stuff as well. I'm 5'-10" with a 32" inseam. Ordered a size Medium. Hoping I made the right choice...

      @DATDesign 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@mikerowley2139 I'm happy to say, no complaints so far. I've put about 100 miles on it too. I don't think you can go wrong either way at 5'-10", but if you want more nimble, I'd go towards M. My only "complaint" is I would like to get an aftermarket stem to position my bars just a tad higher. I do more rails to trails than "mountain" biking, and extended periods in the same position can get a little tiring. No fault of this bike though, because it's not really catering to rails to trails.

    Just picked out the 2021 Fathom 1 27.5 for my roommate's first mountain bike! He's 6ft and the only one they had available was an XL, so hopefully it won't be too big. @@kaleminnema1526 He likes it! If you're 6ft then it should fit you perfectly fine. We both felt comfortable on it. The only negative thing I have to say about it is the longer reach/chainstay make it hard to get the front wheel up for bunny hops and wheelies, but it also means the bike feels more stable on the downhills. Popping a 35mm stem and riser bar on there should help a lot with that though.

    Dude your videos are wonderful and detailed who else is giving opinions from the 80’s or bike weight and so on. This bike is REALLY impressive and also let be know I’m a mechanic and hate bikes with low stacks equals numb hands. I have a riftzone 3 and have all the spacers under a 50mmx30* raise stem with 60mm riser bars and fat paw 36MM grips and it’s better but that’s about it. I’m sic of it and will be selling. The stack is like a 616 around and the reach is stupid at 505mm. I’m 6-1” as well and prefer to be on a large It’s a nice bike and honestly I like it for wheeling about it. This bike has 20mm taller stack reach in my plus reach which will still slow
    Me to have my elbows bent. Fenders are not hard to mount with creativity light plastic fronts are already made for for crowns and they have clamp racks for rear seat stays that don’t require braze on holes. And the weight mine with a 27.5x3.0 front and 2.8 rear turd is a bit over 34LBS. I’m tired of lugging the weight. We si over
    4-6LBS on a bike it’s super dramatic especially pulling ten plus miles.

      Thanks for the question. Very tough answer. Neither is the obvious winner. If you're going to be riding aggressively I think the Fathom is better because it will leave you a few dollars to replace broken parts as you break them and potentially upgrade (brakes). You will also become a better rider faster on a hardtail.

    Love the 21 Fathom line and I think its the bike I wanna buy. I noticed the Trek Roscoe has kick stand bolt holes on the non drive side chainstay portion...can a kick stand be added to the Fathom? This would be my beginner trail bike with 50/50 trail and paved, but I kind of just want to buy once and be done with it, without the need to upgrade. So is this a good beginner spec bike and can a kickstand be added?

      Adding a kickstand might be a challenge. We don't suggest having a kickstand on a bike that will actually go mountain biking. The bumps can cause the kickstand to pop down and cause a safety issue - or just make a lot of noise.

      Hi, with the bike not having ISCG tabs and a press fit BB, I honestly don't know of any. They may exist but we have never had anyone ask for one so we've never searched out the solution. That said, the reason we haven't had to seek one out is that the modern combo of narrow/wide chainrings and clutch derailleurs almost eliminates chains bouncing off chainrings.

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kevin, I assume you're referring to seattube length? The Fathom has a shorter seat tube but quite a bit longer reach. Unless you have exceptionally long legs (like freakish level long), I don't think you will have any issues with fit on either a Talon or Fathom. You're also in the middle of XL sizing so you aren't pushing the limits on either bike. I'd suggest still picking the bike that fits your budget and/or intended use. If you're truely mountain biking, I'd suggest the Fathom as it is an incredible value and performer for actual mountain biking. The Talon would be more of a really nice daily rider that you could take on trails, but not going to inspire confidence like the Fathom.

    are press fit bottom brackets still ok? how about pros and cons for a press fit BB compared to threaded...?

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the two most common issues with press-fit bbs have been that they can creak and are harder to service. To be fair, the bad reputation largely was from other bike brands that used a different version of press fit combined with really bad quality control of their frames which resulted in the common creaking problems. We have been very impressed with Giant and the press-fit standard they have used for not having issues. The pros for press-fit is that it is a lighter system, incorporates larger bearings spaced further apart, provides a larger stronger bb and I think, in mass production, can make assembly quicker. Fans of threaded bottom bracket like the simplicity of removal/install and ease of fixing creaks (remove, clean, reinstall). I don't think one or the other is necessarily better.

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are not the same frame - like a 29" wheel won't even fit on a 27.5" frame. Going the other way, (putting a 27.5" wheel on a 29er frame) will work but it isn't safe. Doing that will drop your bottom bracket enough that you will increase the likelihood of a harsh pedal strike while going over roots/rocks or cornering while pedalling - that can cause really bad crashes so I would not recommend doing it.

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If your primary use is riding mountain bike trails choose the Fathom, if you use the bike more as a daily rider around town with occasional off-road then the Talon. Besides drivetrain and brakes the Fathom is a very different spec: thru axles, dropper, 30mm longer and stronger fork, better rims, tires and Tubeless... all things that make the Fathom perform better offroad.

    • @Srdeo33
      @Srdeo33 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you ride trails at all Fathom 2 is much better choice. Fathom has wider wheels, better tires (2.5" wide DHF/Aggressor in US), tubeless ready, dropper post, thru axle wheels, more travel and more trail friendly geometry. All that for $200 USD more. It is no brainer. To upgrade any one of those would cost you $200 USD. And you can not upgrade to better geometry and thruaxle without changing the frame. If you plan on only riding on paved road and wide gravel road, talon may be ok, but then just get cheaper lower end one like talon 2 or 3. I am not even sure why they have talon 0 in the line up.

      If it helps, in the Trek line, the Roscoe is the more comparative line to the Fathom. The advantages the Trek has are they run a true plus size tire, and frankly have more and in my opinion better color choices. Up until the 2021 model year the Roscoe was the better bike, but now the Fathom is. I’d get this one over the Roscoe with the current specs, and it’s even a little cheaper.

The Fathom 1 also has Shimano brakes - depending on your luck with which level of Shimano brakes (so up in the air as suppliers scramble with substitute parts) if you get the MT420s the brake upgrade is a good improvement too. My personal choice would be a Fathom 2 and upgrading the brakes to Shimano MT520 or better (depending on availability).
