What is your take on new frame size for 2021. Does it fit small? I’m 6’1 would XL frame be ok at 19.5 inches on the Fathom compared to XL Talon1 at 21 inches. Thx
I think you would be fine with the XL for sure. The seat tube length is 19.5 but the top tube length is 26.1. For comparison, the XL in the XTC is 26.2. I tend to go more based on reach and top tube length when im looking at sizing anymore because geometry has changed so much. I hope that helps!
Would the Rocky Mountain Growler be comparable to the Fathom? I’m considering getting either of the two, but I’m wondering what the most aggressive riding is for the Fathom (if it can handle small drops, fast rolling tech.)
Would it make much financial sense to have the LBS upgrade both the Fathom 2 brake system and crankset/bottom bracket (i.e. to full Deore 4-pot brakes/better rotors and Deore 1x12 crankset and Shimano threaded BB) before taking delivery of the bike? Or replace one or the other as they wear out? Thanks! And keep up the great content!!
In this market I would honestly replace what you want, when you want, and then save your other parts as a backup. The bike shop might even install them for free since you are buying the bike from them😃
@@MossieRidesBikes Ok, just wasn’t sure what’d make more sense. Warranty question. Been looking to upgrade from a 10+ year old Gary Fisher and was about ready to, then the pandemic hit. Supply is an issue. I have an opportunity to purchase a Fathom but it's 100 miles away. If there was a warranty issue, what would the process be? Do I have to go back to shop it was purchased at? Can I work with Giant direct? Would local Giant dealer take care of? I would like to purchase it local but who knows when supply will come back. Love the channel, thanks for the help.
So far Giant has still done a great job with warranty through the pandemic within reason. Luckily we haven't had many warranties and you would still wait a bit but they do get it taken care of. As far as who you take it to, as long as you have the original bill of sale you can take the bike to any Giant dealer and they can take care of it for you. The shop I'm at is in NC and we have had people drive from Florida because we had a bike in stock they were looking for! Thanks for supporting the channel!!
Did you have a chance to look at merida big trail? I think they are very similar bikes and both are very appealing. Would be cool if you could review merida big trail as well.

Excellent comparison. Wasn't sold on the blue online but in the shop in person it looks sweet, was hard to tell it is a matte finish. and agree on better value on the 2, so pulled the trigger on it. See how that Praxis crank is over time, squeaks etc, but like you say, same for the Sx crank anyway.
better cancel it while you can, i have one and they suck, the fork, bottombracket and rearhub are trash, Shimano has no spare parts readily available due to the pandemic so when you need repairs or parts within a few months, there are none.

I know in the US this bike was originally coming with the suntour fork. I believe they were doing this just to get the bikes shipped because once the Crest was available that is all they have come with now. Even when we look at the order form you can choose crest or suntour but the suntour has been unavailable for a long time.
Bought a ‘22 29-2 this week. Very interested to see how this HT performs. The 1x12 got dropped to a 1x10, still appears to be plenty of gearing spread for my needs. I was planning to buy a 1 but the Shimano brakes are currently subbed out so not worth the extra dough (will end up adding a set of XT soon enough).
So the selling point of these bikes changed in a interesting way. It now depends if you really want to get 1x12. If you do, getting 29-1 and just upgrading the derailleur to something that actually works is less pain in the *** than changing from 1x10.
@@themoss7115 After 4 months on the bike I can say the 1x10 has been just fine. The performance factor (negative) for me are these brakes. When I get back on my trail bike (w XT’s) my ride livens up. Also plan to get a carbon 800mm / 40mm rise bar.

@@jackietreehorn1754 i got the F 1 29 last october after more than 5000kms the hubs are fine, my bottom bracket blow out and dropper post fail i guess that the only thing that i Know for shure when i buy the bike was that the dropper was the weak part and i would replace it which i did for a pnw, but i think is very good for the price and the most important the frame geometry is awesome
@@pepeanza6187 very remarkable that on one bike the hubs or hubbearings are faulty, and on others the BB and dropper, on my F2 i have now rode like 2000km and the BB and dropper are still fine, the hub also no problem till now since i got the complete rearwheel replaced by Giant three months ago.
Do you know if the medium or large would be better for a person who is 5 ft 9? I wrote a 2020 medium and it felt small. Best bike is a different frame so I was curious I should get a large?
Based off your height I would lean towards a medium but at the end of the day it's all about how you feel on the bike. I'm 5'10 and can technically ride either size but I have always preferred a large
Hei Mossie! Thank you for your videos, they are amazing! One question tho, I got the Gient Fathom 29 2 2021 and the headset is already shot. (didn't have any greace in it) and I'm now looking for a fully sealed unit, but I can't seem to find any information on the headset. Maybe you know a headset that fits in there?
The sizes should be 1-1/8 and 1-1/2 for the upper and lower respectively.
I second AnCap's response
@@OfficialFedHater Is that the ID, that is the steerer diameter? How about the outer diameter, or they are all the same? Sorry if its obvious question. I found a google suggesting Cane creek zs 44 56, but couldnt find more info. Thanks a lot!

Anything that says those specifications should fit.

Betweek suntour and giant fork on fanthom 2 which one is better?
I actually think they are on par with each other. The Giant fork is a newer product so I always have a fear of there being issues but I haven't seen any real problems so far
@@MossieRidesBikes i plan to buy a new bike! Talon 1=650$ and fathom2 =950$ at my place !
Do you think it worth the 300$ to get the fathom 2?
What is your take on new frame size for 2021. Does it fit small? I’m 6’1 would XL frame be ok at 19.5 inches on the Fathom compared to XL Talon1 at 21 inches. Thx
I think you would be fine with the XL for sure. The seat tube length is 19.5 but the top tube length is 26.1. For comparison, the XL in the XTC is 26.2. I tend to go more based on reach and top tube length when im looking at sizing anymore because geometry has changed so much. I hope that helps!
@@MossieRidesBikes thanks for getting back to me. Still think seat tube length plays huge part in bike sizing.
Which one is better.Centeral lock or 6 bolt system 🙂🙂
Would the Rocky Mountain Growler be comparable to the Fathom? I’m considering getting either of the two, but I’m wondering what the most aggressive riding is for the Fathom (if it can handle small drops, fast rolling tech.)
Hi guys, what do you think about the Giant made fork Crest ? Btw, I fully agree with the value not corresponding to higher price of 1.
A little off topic, but I’m not sure you’ve covered this bike yet...would you be able to get your hands on a 2021 Giant Trance Advanced? I’m curious as to your thoughts about the bike. Seems almost like the perfect full sus bike (even has carbon TRX wheelset) except for the rear triangle not being composite/carbon. Thoughts on if there’s much of a difference between front and rear triangles being carbon versus just having only a carbon front triangle. Thanks in advance!
love this video very specific comparison..can u make a comparison with 2021 xtc slr 2 and 2021 fathom 29 2..thanks in advance :)
@@MossieRidesBikes Thank you very much!
Did you have a chance to look at merida big trail? I think they are very similar bikes and both are very appealing. Would be cool if you could review merida big trail as well.
I’m looking at getting a 2022 fathom. My background is road and I ride a medium frame. I know nothing about mtb so was wondering what size to buy at 178cm tall? Would appreciate it if you could give me some idea. Some have said medium and some said small. Other brands M/L ! Really confused
Trek roscoe 8 2021 29er or giant fathom 1 2021 29er?
Roscoe
Got my 2021 fathom 2 used for $950, popped on some guide r 4 pistons I got $150, and it’s now on par with the fathom 1 I’d say
that was a steal!
Just ordered a Fathom 2. Can't wait!
better cancel it while you can, i have one and they suck, the fork, bottombracket and rearhub are trash, Shimano has no spare parts readily available due to the pandemic so when you need repairs or parts within a few months, there are none.
@@jackietreehorn1754 what's wrong with the fork, bottom bracket and the hub? It's a $1700 (CAD) bike... what are you expecting from it?

Does your shop carry the momentum sub brand? If so quick review on the UX9?
It's funny you say that. We have had them on order for a while now and we just got in the UX3s. I got about 3/4 of what I wanted to film before it sold but I am going to do a quick video on that at least!
Cool. Its really affordable and nice looking. I'd like to get one just for riding around with my daughter.
TR wheels 👌. With the fathom does that mean rim tape is already on there? Just remove the stock tubes and pour in the sealant as seen in the vid?
They actually don't even have tubes in them. The valves and tape are already installed. You just have to take the valve core out with a little tool they provide you and squirt the sealant in!
@@MossieRidesBikes oh nice. Thanks for the insight.
I’m looking to upgrade, and I’m shopping all brands of hard tail in this price point. I’ve seen/heard that giant uses dated geometry. Is that still the case with these? I’m not sure what is considered modern geometry these days.
Video I was looking for looking to buy one this week!
i wouldnt buy one again, i have one and its basicly toast after a few hundred kms of riding, the forks suck, the bottombracket suck, the rear hub suck, its just a pain in the ass bike that does look very cool.
Think that happens with most Giant hardtails cuz my taron had the same issues as well. First good, then after some riding it starts creaking
The UK website list the fathom 2 as having Suntour forks but the photos show the crest. Anyone have any ideas which ones come on the 2?
I know in the US this bike was originally coming with the suntour fork. I believe they were doing this just to get the bikes shipped because once the Crest was available that is all they have come with now. Even when we look at the order form you can choose crest or suntour but the suntour has been unavailable for a long time.
@@MossieRidesBikes awesome thanks

@Mossiebikerides In the U.K the front has quick release thru axle. Is this the same basically as a normal thru axle? Tanks
they have a different fork in the UK, it's the suntour raidon 34, instead of the giant crest.
@@wst3968 Thanks for getting back to me, I bought the Fathom 2 29er & love it
I'm told (I'm pretty new to the scene) that the Trek Stache is a better hardware buy for the money, can anyone confirm or confute this claim ?
I went to Giant and tried to buy one. But they are pre-sold out. theres a waiting lis here in Brisbane.
What size was the 2 you weighed? Maybe I missed it?
I apologize! I did put a shot of the size in the video but I never explicitly stated what it was. It's a medium!
@@MossieRidesBikes sweet that’s the size I have. I probably made it heavier when I JM added deore 4 piston brakes though.

Here in the Philippiness we have SLR frames it’s an AL version of xtc.giant says its 20% lighter than ta SL frames.
Ahhh, giant use to have the SLR in the states as well but they don't anymore which is a shame. The SLR frames were always super nice
when mossie said exact same build, does it mean that the frame of 27.5 and 29er have exactly the the same geometry that i can exchange their wheels and fork and get exactly the same performance? better breaks
Way better hub system The shimano hub bearings are crappy and you know it
Better breaks for sure
And a better crank set up
All of these combined gives you a more secure ride JMO

I just got the Fathom 2 and love it! My Crest 34 fork has started clicking recently though :(
Mine too, have had it for about 2 months. I cleaned dirt off around the o-rings at the bottom of the stantions and that helped,
I posted a video of mine clicking right away. I was able to exchange it. The second bike clicks too, but not near as bad
What was done about it? Mine started clicking on the first ride. Also my seat post is really slow to return

Thanks for the video. After seeing this it seems that maybe Giant should have come up with a Fathom 3 so there would be no need to upgrade components down the road. Nice bikes indeed! I love my 2020 Fathom 1.
I almost bought this bike til I read a bunch of reviews about the fork making noises

Would anyone recommend the Fathom over the XTC Advanced or XTC SLR for general trail riding?
I've been riding my Giant Trance X 29er for a few years and I'm looking to get a hard tail for less maintenance, lighter and agile.
The fathom would definitely feel closer to your Trance but without the rear suspension. I love the XTC SLR but I've heard from more than one person that it feels more twitchy than the fathom. The weight of the XTC would on the climbs though😀
@@MossieRidesBikes I'm leaning towards the Fathom 27.5 because it seems more flickable but I also like the XTC Advanced's weight and short chainstay.

That bike would make a nice ebike conversion

The fathom 2 is a great bike but giants in-house crest 34 fork is terrible.
the rear hubs are trash too.
