    Alright so I've been catching a lot of flack lately from people wondering why I am big on high glycemic carbohydrates when it comes down to breaking a fast.
    Well, I thought that merited an explanation. You see, when it comes down to a fasting period, we become very insulin sensitive. Now what insulin sensitivity is, is when your body's actual release of insulin is determined by how much food you eat. So if you are more insulin sensitive for example, less carbs are going to cause more of an insulin response.
    If you're insulin resistant, or you're not creating a whole lot of insulin, that means you can consume a lot of carbs and your insulin levels aren't going to change all that much. Now we don't want to be insulin resistant, we want to be insulin sensitive...one of the main benefits of fasting.
    0:47 When you consume carbs, your blood sugar levels rise, and your pancreas starts to produce insulin...this instructs cells to absorb blood sugar for energy and/or storage.
    1:29 Insulin also stimulates protein synthesis and enhances the transport of amino acids - so by consuming carbs with your protein you'll be able to increase the absorption of protein.
    3:26 Spiking your insulin and maintaining it low is optimal for breaking a fast.

    Thank you for sharing all these information. However, I was expecting that you will tell the food that need to eat when breaking the fast though you explicitly demonstrated and informed us but then, the terminology is super scientific and difficult to understand in layman language. Can you please be specific the foods need to avoid when breaking fast? Yes, you said no carbs when breaking fast. So, is it okay to eat, boiled egg whites, bananas and other fruits when breaking fast? Your knowledge and wisdom is highly appreciated. Thank you so much and looking forward to your response.

    For people who don’t understand
    Avoid combining fats and carbs together right when you break your fast
    A little high carb food to break your fast is good, after which you can go about eating normally
    From experience, fruits, milk, coffee and tea with little amounts of sweeteners, 1-2 biscuits and white rice are good for breaking a fast.
    Additional note: coffee just before starting a fasting window helps a lot😊

    I'm 71 and belly fat ain't coming off quickly, but is coming off slowly. Figure it will take me 6 months to lose what someone in their 40's could lose in 2 months. No big deal. I eat 2 meals a day, fast once a week, and work out 6 days a week. No processed sugar at all, very little carbs, mostly veggies, fish and beef. I'll get there

    When you specify that we can eat carbs that means more than 20g (alowed per day). Or how much g of carbs per that first meal?

    Couldn't you break the fast (and get that effect) with peanut butter? I hate trash carbs like rice cakes.

    Brilliant! I have just come to the same conclusion myself re this moderate carbs plus protein to break a fast. I am still avoiding grains but eat a 'rainbow' salad along with protein...inluding beets, red peppers, carrots. I felt a definite detriment to my health doing hardcore Ketogenic my skin, eyes etc and yet my energy levels were steadier. I am fighting autoimmune difficulties... I am thrilled you posted this video, it is confirmation I am on the right track. Big hug Tom and family. X

    Hello Thomas, thank you for the great content. I have a question which relates to metformin. Many people seem to be taking metformin for its life extension qualities. I understand it reduces the amount of sugar your liver allows into the blood stream. It also affects insulin sensitivity. My question is what are your thoughts on metformin and does it affect muscle gains. Hopefully this might help for an idea for some more content you can produce. Many thanks once again Thomas.

    There really needs to be a short end dumbed down version because this stuff gets tiring and I am not and that mood to really investigate all the terms. Just give examples of what foods and the size and quantity After a fast or after a long term pro long fast of 24 to 48 hours. Like I get it it works but come on

    So, would no butter no oil air popped popcorn be sufficient? I'm a little confused on the carb first meal breaker and what to eat along with it...and then what to eat after it, like an hour later. High fat, or vegi or fruit juice?

    Does the rice cakes still apply to people on Keto? E.g. a Protein shake and rice cakes 30-45min PWO and then a high fat moderate protein meal about 60-90 afterwards?

    I don't think you want to spike your insulin with high carbs if your insulin resistance or type 2 diabetic, just to break a fast.

    I tried that. My blood sugar spiked too high and 3 hours later I was semi hypoglycemic and was laying in bed dizzy and wanting to die...I think I ate too many carbs.

    I never drink these anymore, but it if you're talking about high carb, no fat, what about soda? If i remember correctly, coke or pepsi for example, has like 60 g of carbs or something, but no fat! I remember, back when I was uninformed, I used to prioritize soda for that reason!

    Q: I did a 24hr fast then drank 4-6 oz of organic chicken broth went to bed 2hrs later and it’s now 17hrs later and I still haven’t eaten. Not sure what to eat to break this fast?

    First 20hr fast after doing 16/8 for a month. Now trying alternative day fasting with 20hr fast on fasting days. I have my plain tuna and my rice cakes ready to go... Not looking forward to it. Lol😑

    So "breaking a fast" meaning after a ctotal abstinence from food for a period , or do you mean the regular kind of interval fasting with one or two meals a day? This is confusing. I've had one meal a day consisting of a small kale and berry shake and an egg for the last several days, after 27 days of 2 meals with the small shake and then veggies and 3oz of protein. Lost 25 lbs in 28 days.Then today, because I was going to start HIIT work outs, I had a large spinach salad with oil and vinegar and an egg. Should I be doing the rice cracker or other kind of high glycemic carb before the other food? Sorry, long question.
