I've carried one of these for over 25 years. Mine is so old that it has several design differences from yours. Mine does not have the spider on the blade, only on the clip. The clip is narrower and flatter, is just a tapered rectangle with no flare out at the tip, the attachment point is crown shaped instead of round, and the spider engraving on it is more subtle. It doesn't have any extra holes drilled to change where the clip is attached. The opening hole is closer to the spine, and the lanyard hole is about half the diameter. It's GIN-1 (Gingami I) steel.
I still have the box and "book" for it too, and the box is just a plain little red cardboard box that's only slightly bigger than the knife.
This is my second Harpy, as my first one was lost or stolen after I'd had it for about a year. They were both the third generation version of the Harpy, but the first one was an early gen 3, with the difference being that it didn't have the spider engraving anywhere on it and it was stamped G2 (still the same Gimgami I steel, just a different stamp for it). I'm still pissed about the loss of that knife.
It was pretty cool seeing it show up in Hannibal, and I'm sure that movie sold a lot of Harpies. I'd already had it for like five years at that point though, and my reason for getting a nautical knife was for an entirely practical reason at the time... I wanted something that would cut through a seatbelt like butter. A friend in high school had rolled his car and burned to death, hanging upside down, because he couldn't release his seatbelt. I've carried the Harpy ever since and fortunately I've never had to use it for that reason.

Wow. Sorry for what happened to your friend. We all carry knives for different reasons. Hearing this is just amongst the meany real world applications this knife is capable of. Spyderco makes great knives. I've only carried this knife acouple times, I like the design. It dosent take much training to use a hawkbill blade in a selfdeffence scenario and it's a great tool for easy EDC tasks. Great design over all. Thankyou for the support.

Wow what a story and lovely thing to read , of course not hearing about the horrible thing that happened to your friend . I’m sorry for your loss brother.
You gave so much information about the knife here and you sound like an interesting bloke!
Yes I got a Harpy after I bought the book. I also had difficulty finding a Civilian which Hannibal also bought in the book.
I had two chances to buy a non serrated Harpy but the price was CRAZY!
I got taken into a police station here in Ireland for sitting in a park eating my apple and mango! All for having this knife! Nobody would have said anything if I had a steak knife!
Eventually after two hours a cop with sense let me out and handed me my knife and asked what was it because, and I quote ‘one hell of a knife’...
I’m very glad I found your channel mate

I just purchased my third Harpy. First one went missing around seventeen years ago, so I bought another one off of eBay, and it turned out to be a counterfeit. This time around, I ordered from DLT Trading, so I expect it to be legit. I’ve been collecting Spydercos for the past twenty five years. The Harpy and Cricket remain my favorite EDC knives. Great video!

Man I’ve always wanted a hawkbill spydie. Even the lil matriarch. Love them. Most useful knife shape in my opinion.

The knife of Hannibal "cannibal" Lecter from the books by Thomas Harris... 👌🗡😎, by the way I love full steel Spydercos, and I have also the Police, the Endura and the Native, all serrated. But under stressful and fearful circumstances, my guess is that they could easily slip through your hands. In a defensive contest I would carry them only wearing gloves. Well, just my 2 cents man. Nice video as usual from you, I think you deserve more followers... 😉😀🖐🖐

There was a guy called “Sensei Israel” I believe , who did a review on this , and he used skate tape on the handles as it’s so slippery . Ironic as it’s supposed to be a fishermans knife . I think Spyderco finally stopped selling this a year ago so it’s definitely passed into folklore and subsequent high-reseller prices (I got mine 10 years ago and wouldn’t part with it for all the tea in China)

Nautical knife / needed lanyard hole to prevent it going overboard when I’m right seas or high up in the rigging .
All ocean knives have them for that exact purpose.
So they prob won’t ditch it when they feel the knive can be used on board or near the water .
The only thing missing is a marlin spike

Great boat knives designed to cut line & netting in an away motion so you don't cut you. Slot on the side is for loosening or opening shackles...Hannibal must have been a swabby!
