  • Flatirons Tuning Tech Tip - Why we like the MAP DCCD Controller
    We recently installed a MAP DCCD Controller into our 2014 WRX Race Car when we swapped in an STI 6-Speed Transmission. We were very impressed with its function and capability, so we wanted to put together a video about all that this little box can do.
    One thing we ran into was that getting the vehicle speed and engine RPM is a bit more tricky in the CANBUS cars (2008+), but we did manage to figure that out.
    These signals can be captured behind the gauge cluster, and on our 2014 WRX, they were the following wires:
    Engine RPM - Gray with Red Stripe in Pin #32
    Vehicle Speed - Pink with Green Stripe in Pin #31
    Check the PIN out for your specific car in the gauge cluster, but they may be the same for you.
    Thanks for watching, and if this helped, please leave a like.

      Thanks for your question. In short, it allows your DCCD to function in a way that improves your cars traction and handling. And since you can start with a number of different maps for different behaviors or surfaces, you can quickly zero in on the map that you like the most.
      Thanks for watching!

    Hello,
    Just purchased the MAP DCCD from you guys for my STI Swap. What location do you recommend installing the DCCD?
    Does the colors match up on the 2016 WRX as well?

    Is it bad for the transmission to change lockup while wheels are slip spinning? I read somewhere in my 2005 STI owners manual that its OK to change DCCD manual mode settings while car is turning around a corner but its bad to change the lockup while car has wheels slipping and spinning, like when you're drifting or sliding. (not that I could even reach the knob while I'm busy AWDrifting.)

      @FlatironsTuning  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for your question. When the DCCD is working, it is constantly changing the lock-up of the differential. So I don't think that in and of itself is what is being talked about.
      If you are looking in your manual, I believe that what they are referring to is pulling the diff out of auto mode and putting it into manual mode while you are driving. One reason certainly could be that it would be that it would put a little extra stress on the diff if it was in a more open setting to ramp up to an aggressive lock.
      More likely thought, it is because that if you manually make a large change to how the differential is behaving, it can have a dramatic effect on the cars handling, and it could cause you to lose control of the car.
      Long story short, it would be best to put the car into manual mode and pick the lock-up before you start moving.
      Thanks for watching, and I hope that helps!

    Do you guys set up the Dccd for the Customer say I tell you I won’t set for snow gravel tarmac regular street driving would you preset those for someone and just send it if they don’t know how to do the set up their self like on the computer

      Thanks for your question Frank. We don't do that at this time. So far we have been able to find one of the maps that works well for us. But that being said, we are starting to play around a little bit with this, and if we get to the point that we think that we have something to offer, we might.
      I'd also say that the interface is very user friendly, so you can make small changes easily so you can test whether you are moving in the direction you want to go in.
      Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

    Have you ever seen engine rpm fluctuate after wiring one of these up? I recently had one installed and sometimes when cruising I see the rpm jump all over the place

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for your question. Because this should only be riding on top of existing signal wires, not spliced into them, it should not have any effect on actual RPM.
      If you have recently done a 6-speed swap, I'd recommend checking the wiring for the speed sensor, and possibly the sensor itself. It could be that is where the issue is.
      Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

    what setup would you use in a gravel rally stage?? 100% locked??
    is it like a plug and play?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question. The MAP DCCD controller isn't exactly plug and play, but it is fairly easy to wire in. For gravel, you would not necessarily want to run it at full lock. For some instances, this may be okay, but not all.
      MAP DCCD does have a pre-build gravel and slick map, and I'd recommend starting out with those. You will most likely want some dynamic behavior to get the car to work best.
      And running in full lock all of the time may wear the center DCCD out more quickly.
      If you want to do that, you would want to look at replacing the DCCD with a clutch type unit most likely.
      Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

    I have a version 8 sti drivetrain in my version 9 sti. Because my drivetrain is 35/65 and my dccd controller was made for the 45/55 version 9 I have very bad binding. Would MAP DCCD help fix this issue? i tried to just swap the OEM dccd module but the connectors are different for version 8/9.

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question. If you are sure that the binding issue is the center differential, and you are sure that the center differential is still functioning properly, then a standalone controller should allow you to get it working properly again.
      If you disconnect all power to the center diff, and you are still having the binding issue, most likely there is some other cause for the issue.
      Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

    If a gd sti has an abs delete is something like this necessary to retain function of the dccd?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question. Deleting your ABS would trigger a fault which would disable DCCD function. So yes, if you wanted your DCCD to work in that condition, you would need a controller like this to get them working again.

      @@FlatironsTuning I've heard you can just leave the solenoid plugged in but not hooked to anything and it'll trick everything into working, I always assumed that was false have you tried it?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cainlawson4570 I can tell you that if you have an issue with the ABS, because it is tied directly to the factory DCCD control, it will deactivate the DCCD. Everything like power, wheel speed signals, etc., has to be going to the actuator for the DCCD to work.

    For GR WRX to STI trans swaps which would you say is a better platform to run MAP DCCD or DCCD Pro Universal?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your question. We actually were running the DCCD Pro on our Rally car before we did the swap on the PPIHC car. From our experience, the MAP DCCD controller gives you much more functionality, and is a lot more customize-able (you can modify or build your own maps for instance) than the DCCD Pro.
      That has been our experience at least.
      Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the question. With the STI, if you remove the stock DCCD control, then you will lose your ABS as well because everything on the network will go into limp mode. You may have an easier time with your early STI, but for this reason, we haven't put this controller on an STI yet.
      Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question. We used DCCD Pro initially in our rally car, and the MAP DCCD has much more capability and is much easier to adjust the behavior. That is why it is what we use exclusively now.

    what wires are they that you have to tap into in the ecu for the gd wrx, do you know?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your question Tristan. You need to find a wiring diagram for your year WRX and find the wires for the brake signal, rpm signal, throttle position, vehicle speed. There are more inputs that you can tap into as well, but those are the main 4 that will get you the significant function out of the controller.
      If you have more questions, I'd recommend that you look through their installation instructions. Here is a link:

      Good luck with your install, and feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!

    When you’re driving around should I just keep it in Auto Mode and When is it best to have it Manual Mode?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are using one of the pre-set maps, you would just leave the transmission at that setting. If have not found one of those that you like, then I'd say you would be best to leave the controller in Auto mode. Leaving the controller in manual mode will leave you at a fixed torque split, and that is not ideal unless you are only driving on slick surfaces (and even then, one of the gravel maps would be more ideal).
      Hope that helps!

    Can you disconnect the rear end if the handbreak is used? In the same way its done on rally cars?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello David. There is a connection for the parking brake so that you can program the center diff to go to open when it is pulled. If you read through the installation instructions, you can get a sense for all of the input that you can send to the controller, and once there, you can tune this controller much like you would tune an engine.
      Thanks for your question!

    Can u make the centre diff send all the power to the rear to make it rwd with this ?

    • @FlatironsTuning
      @FlatironsTuning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question. The short answer is that when no power is sent to the DCCD, the default state of the diff will give you maximum rear bias.
      It is a lot like rear-wheel drive, but some power will still go to the front. It does somewhat depend on the year of the DCCD as well.
      Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
