I think (for beginners) it is also very good to understand that hand independence can be pretty tough to learn. What helped me getting the hang of hand independence (I have only played piano / keyboard for about 2 months now), is to spend an hour, maybe two hours per day, just playing the left hand baseline, over and over, until you can read a book effortlessly while keeping the baseline going. Making big movements with your right hand is also a nice exercise.
