      agree, huge discovery. However I have the problem that my trousers always get stuck around the knee due to friction with the socks. In fact, I've realized they work great with lined wool trousers, as the lining eliminates much of the friction and perhaps they are also slightly roomier, but still can't wear them comfortably with most of my fairly (but not even too much) slim chinos, which still are what I wear the majority of the time.

    I guess I just jumped straight to the top. I started wearing very patterned coloured socks with my suit soon as I started wearing suits. Possibly because i was used to wearing chinos and coloured socks as a more casual look. Always get comments (good ones) about the socks. I think one the reason many people are surprised when they see someone with great socks and with color or patterns to me is b3 sure so many people put no real effort into how they dress and their socks are afterthought. So when some people see someone who stands out with elegance and wearing great looking socks it pops to them and it’s complementing. At least that’s how I see it.

    That was interesting about the Burgundy/Green sock selection. I have to admit, I've never thought about those as color possibilities for socks,....or I think I haven't. Also, glad you covered the vertical striped color alternating socks. I was going to write about them if you hadn't. I just received my first shipment of over the calve vertical striped, alternating colored socks from Raphael at Fort Belvedere. Ahh, they are THEE coolest and most beautifully aesthetic socks I own or have ever seen. They bridge your pants to your shoes, it seems. They enhance both shoe and pant at the same time, and can work as a color accent of sorts that can repeat a color of say a sweater or tie you might be wearing. I can't talk enough about them... Thank you.

    Loved the episode, Sonya! Actually, I wore horizontal striped socks yesterday. However I wore them with boots. Not too daring, but I have worn them with shoes in the past. They are OTC brown with a lighter brown stripe made from merino wool by Dapper Classics. Very comfortable and just the right thickness. I don’t like really thin socks, and thick ones are unsightly and can alter the fit of your shoes making them too tight.

    • @SARTORIALTALKS
      @SARTORIALTALKS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the recommendation. Using toned down colors in the stripes is a smart way to ease into them. Regarding thinner socks, they can be beautiful but do get holes more easily. Cheers ! ~Sonya

      I’m the same. Don’t like the sock thick, but thinner. Too thin and feels like I’m not wearing anything between my feet and shoes. My feet also sweat a bit when in closed shoes a long time all day. So what I did was to wear very lightweight thin moisture fabric wicking socks and put on the regular sock over them. It helps to fills out my shoe more, feels better for my feet and avoid feet sweating all that much into my leather shoes.

    I'm a big fan of the shadow stripe socks. The brand that I get mine from (Fort Belvedere) have contrasting colors as the thinner stripes, so it makes them more versatile to match various parts of the outfit(blue/yellow, grey/turqoise, green/purple is prob my fav one in my collection). I must say i'm still on the camp of generally wearing socks close in color to my pants and conservative patterns, though I have a couple more 'wild' ones with paisley and floral motifs.

      @JouleTVz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello @@SARTORIALTALKS / Sonya,
      thank you for the answer, I am not sure whether it is due to static cling or whether it is simply friction paired with the overly light fabrics of today.
      In any case, the approach with the metal and the water sounds interesting, I actually don't really want to spray hairspray on my socks.
      Since the water thing is self-explanatory, what exactly is meant by "run a metal hanger inside the pant leg"?

      I LOVE fine tailoring but like to walk the line between elegance and femininity...and not so much a straight-up "butch" look. For me, I like a blended yet tailored, elegant look.
      To start with, I'm 5'11" (180 cm) and wear a 42-43 shoe, albeit very narrow, and I do not want to give folks the wrong impression. I'm well aware that I'm the average (mayhaps above average) stature of most men, but that's the way the Good Lord made me. (My dad is 6'5", his mother and sister were 5'10"...and my own daughter is 6'2", so we are a VERY tall family!!!) A "delicate petite thing" I am not nor will ever be...but I want to exude the regal, elegant nature that is mine...without appearing like I'm trying to be a man.
      This video was quite timely. I realize socks are genderless in their utilitarianism, but I have been thinking about socks lately. Not the flimsy things that they pass off as trousers socks in the women's hosiery department nor the black/brown boring men's socks of an earlier generation but quality socks with flair. I am a color aficionado and socks DO seem to be the one place where color and style should merge!

    Curious that you consider striped socks to be much more daring than super bright colours. My first 3 pairs of OTC socks were an argyle pattern and 2 very thin striped patterns, and while I get a bit self-conscious wearing the argyle, I wear the thin stripes all the time and don't feel like they are very showy, since they are still in traditional sock colours (navy & blue, dark brown & medium brown).

    Socks are my favorite sartorial topic to talk about because I am a big collector of them (about 40 pairs of dress socks if I’m not too conservative with the figure), ranging from black to lavender and many others in between. I just have one question for you. Although I do own pairs such as merino wool and silk blend, I do own a few nylon pairs as well. All ranging in many colors and patterns. They are some of my favorite pairs to wear during the Spring and Summer, and are quite light in terms of feel and look. I’m curious to know how you feel about them as part of a man’s wardrobe and what’s your general thoughts on them. Thanks.

      I appreciate nylon socks with slippers and more delicate shoes like pumps, and perhaps with alligator leather. What specific types of shoes do you wear nylon socks with, as a rule ? ~S ps: great point about the summer advantage

      @@SARTORIALTALKS Thank you for the reply and good question. I’m fairly flexible with what kinds of dress shoes I wear with nylon dress socks as long as it goes with the aesthetic. Even though I will wear them with Oxfords and Monk Straps, I wear them mostly with loafers. Since I don’t usually go with the sans socks look, nylon dress socks, for me, are a great substitute. So my rule of thumb is, the warmer the weather, the lighter the shoes, the lighter the hosiery. It is something I recommend, and if done right, can look sophisticated, elegant, and classic.

      @@SARTORIALTALKS My pleasure and you’re welcome. I think for men who aren’t used to the feel and look of nylon dress socks, it’s a good avenue to venture, and it can give a man a look that stands out without trying too hard. It is worth exploring.

    Very interesting and timely - I need new socks. 😋 After watching this I am open to trying something new. But sorry, I still can't stomach the no-socks look. 😩

      @@SARTORIALTALKS Here in New Mexico we frequently wear cowboy boots and you can't see the socks. 😊

    Navy socks with brown shoes and black socks with black. Some things should be kept classy IMO. Go big on bracelets and a colourful pocket square.

    White socks have been staple in Herzegovinian fashion for millenia now ;), even so that other republics of old Yugoslavia made funny jokes about wearing pair of ones and still do. Needless to say it has scared me for life so I now own only one pair of white socks.

      This is new information for sure, haha. Thank you for sharing your trauma and I looked up Herzegovinian fashion for a primer. Cheers ! ~Sonya
