At the Taxi Stand in front of St. Peter's Basilica the cab driver wanted 30 Euros to take us to the Mausoleum of Augustus. It's only a 10 minute walk but we were exhausted from touring the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's all morning. Shouldn't have cost more than 10 or 12 Euro but we probably would have paid up to 20. He was quite rude about it so we declined. None of the other cabbies would even deal with us because he was the 1st one in the queue. They were all standing around talking and smoking and obviously didn't want to work. We wound up walking and so glad we did because we got to experience the beautiful views along the Tiber and the Ponte Sant'Angelo. We took taxis all over Rome and Florence and this was the one and only time we had an issue.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sorry you had such as hard time with the taxi drivers. This is what I mean by a few of them giving the rest a bad name. I am glad for you that you enjoyed the walk, and I'm also glad to hear that other than this experience, you had no other problems with taxis in Rome and Florence!
Sounds like my experience. I got a taxi from my hotel to the Vatican Museums for €22 and that included a winding ride around the streets of Rome because of construction. The driver was great (Verona 308 was his cab). After the visit to the museum and Vatican courtyard, I made my way to the taxi stand at San Pietro. The driver first asked how many (one) and then quoted me €38!!!! OMG. I told him, "It's a €20 ride!" He mumbled something about the traffic. 😅 "No, thanks, I'll walk." My hotel was near the Colosseum so he probably could have picked up a fare easily enough there. Yes, I ended up walking and it was almost 4 km from the taxi stand but I sure saw a lot of Rome. 😅
@@chronic2023 I'm glad you were able to walk back to your hotel - it's too bad there was not another taxi in the line you could have taken. I am sorry to hear these stories as I really believe most taxi drivers are honest - it's just these that try to gouge tired tourists that really make a bad name for the rest of them!
Landed in Rome today..guys grabbed us leaving terminal. Started walking us away from taxi line. Because I’d watched this video last week, I asked if he was a white taxi. No he was a black taxi. I asked cost and he replied meter. I said no thanks and went to white taxi line. My adult son was so impressed!, thank you!
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing your experience. I am so glad you were in the know and avoided paying more than you needed to! Great job! I hope you have a wonderful visit in Rome!
Asking if a driver has a white taxi won’t help you. Many scam drivers have white taxis. You need to look at the doors for the City of Rome logo. A scam white taxi will not have the City of Rome logo on the door.
And hailing a taxi on the street is a good way to attract a scam white taxi. You must always check the door for the City of Rome logo. I agree itTaxi is the best taxi APP IN Rome.
I was just in Rome. Got a good, honest driver to take me to the Vatican Museums from my hotel east of the Colosseum. €22. Because of construction and one-way streets, you may get the impression that the driver is "taking you for a ride" price wise. In fact, Rome is a bit of a mess to get around in. On the way back, I went to a taxi stand east of the Vatican and the driver quoted me €38 for the ride back. 😅😅😅 No, thanks. My feet were killing me but there was NO way I was paying €38 for a €20 ride.
Great job avoiding that overly-expensive taxi ride! I love walking in Rome but sometimes one is just too tired. If there were no other taxis in the queue, I'd have called for one, or gone to the next taxi stand. Or taken the bus! But the good thing is you were savvy enough to know not to get into that taxi. Good job!
The absolute best guard against being overcharged is Elyssa’s tip on using the taximeter estimator BEFORE you APP for the cab. These are actually very accurate for Rome. Just type in your location and destination and any other prompts and you will know the cost of your trip. Stick to that value if you’re overcharged and pay only that amount. It helps to have small bills and change on you when using Rome cabs. I’ve lived in Rome for 7 years and I just recently had to rely on the taximeter to get myself out of an overcharge. I did it and you can do it too. It works like a charm. Knowledge is your friend.
I advise writing down the address of your hotel if you know where you are staying when you arrive at the airport in Rome and give this to the taxi driver....Then get some hotel business cards when you arrive at your hotel and use these when your away from your hotel and use these hotel business cards the same way. Writing down destination addresses you know in advance will also help the taxi driver make the transaction more smooth.
This is excellent advice! I've heard from some people that they forgot the name of the hotel where they were staying and had a hard time getting back to their hotel. Thanks for sharing!
This channel has to be on to-do list of everyone who are planning to come Rome. Seriously, thank you very much for the hard work put on to making these videos.
Wow, thank you! I appreciate your kind comments. Thanks a lot for recognizing the amount of work that goes into these. It makes what I do all worthwhile!
Great advice, especially about not handing over money until you're outside the car, with your luggage, and after the driver confirms it is the correct amount (and has change in hand, if applicable). Unscrupulous drivers might take your 50€ bill then quickly switch it with another bill, e.g. a 20€ then claim that you owe the difference, e.g. you need to pay another 30€. Passengers who are tired might be fooled; others might pay to avoid the conflict/hassle.
Thanks for your comments. Yes, this is the scam I hear about most often and I think they know it works because visitors are tired and just want to get to their destination. In any case, really most drivers are honest, but if you get an unscrupulous one, it helps to be prepared!
Thank you for this video - my husband always says to me, why do you watch so much youtube on places we are going to by the time we get there it won't be exciting as you'll have seen it all already !! My response is, if I come away with one tiny little piece of information then it's worth it and this video is a perfect example of that. I had no idea about the fixed price taxi fare only being applicable to accom within the Aurelian Walls or that the taxi should be registered in the city and having now heard that I have changed our accomodation booking to one within the walls. I was undecided as to which place I wanted to stay in and this has made the decision a little easier. Thank you
Another great video! We're planning on taking a taxi from FCO to our Airbnb near Piazzale Gregorio VII and from our Airbnb to Termini for when we go on our second leg of our Italy trip. It'll be easier and safer than taking trains with our luggage.

I found this video very informative and helpful for navigating taxis in Rome. I was there this week and noticed it is crucial to always look at the side of the car to confirm it’s an official Rome taxi and ask the driver to turn the meter on (unless to/from airport flat rate). Unfortunately, in my experience around 50% of taxis in tourist spots might try to overcharge or refuse to use the meter unless specifically asked. Staying aware of these tips can help ensure a fair ride. Thanks for sharing this valuable information!
Useful as always thank you. Although I speak Italian well, I’ve had problems with touts who try to grab my baggage - particularly at Ciampino - so as to escort me fairly insistently to a pay desk which would lead to a trip in a shared 10-seater waiting in one of the outer car parks. Those trips can sometimes cost less, but they take two hours while everyone is dropped off. I’ve even had them try to say that the payment is for the regular white cabs at the taxi stand and that the method of payment has now been updated into prepayment at a desk. Elsewhere (Cagliari) I’ve had them grab my bags and proceed at pace out into the car park. The remedy is to ignore them, protest firmly if they try to grab a bag and to insist on the registered Roma can in line only. Wearing a mask helps avoid eye contact with them. Once I alleged that I was COVID+ but it didn’t repel them!
Thanks for sharing your experience! I think the best thing to do is to know in advance how you plan to get into the city and then stick to that plan. Forewarned is forearmed!
I got terribly ripped off catching a taxi at the train station in Rome. The issue was I didn’t know where the meter was located in the taxi , I am sure that the driver didn’t clear the meter so for a 3 mile ride he charged me 56 euro. It left me avoiding taking taxis though the next day I had walked 27000 steps so I capitulated and grabbed a taxi at a stand to go 4 miles…. 15euro aaaaaargh
Oh dear I am really sorry to hear you had such a bad experience with taxi drivers in Rome. Thank you for sharing your experience - hopefully someone else can learn from it.
The meter can be in different places depending on the driver and his/her car. You might see the meter on or near the rearview mirror or close to the radio in the center. Either way, the meter should be visible to you from where you sit. If you can't see the meter, ask the driver to show you where it is. @@apheenaroebuck-webb3385

I just tried to download the IT taxi app and noticed it only had 15 reviews, all very bad! Was looking at the wrong app please? Going to Rome next week for first time and finding all your advice really helpful.
I understand it has bad reviews. I use this app all the time and have no problems with it. I still recommend it but it's of course up to you. You can try the other apps like Uber or FreeNow.
I have often found myself far from our hotel by the end of the day, suffering from sore knee and in need of a taxi. Your advice is so extremely helpful. I have downloaded the IT Taxi app for those times when I am not near a stand, which we've used often. Thank you! How do I find your B&B info?
Thanks so much for letting me know you found this video helpful. We ran a B&B in Rome from 2001-2018 but got out of that business and now we focus 100% on TH-cam and our websites, www.romewise.com and www.florencewise.com.
Just back from a short visit - our first - to Rome. This video was super helpful, and we used the advice to get the fixed price €50 Euro taxi to and from the airport. We also downloaded the ITTaxi app, but we ended up never using it or taxis. In the end, we just enjoyed walking everywhere. We stayed near Trev Fountrain, and I think the longest walk we had was to the Vatican City or maybe to Travestere one evening, about 30 minutes or so. But the walks were beautiful, with amazing architecture and sights around every corner. And whilst walking. every now and again, we might just stop at a street-side bar/cafe for a coffee or cold beer. I think we may have missed some of this atmosphere in a Taxi. Although we did clock up 80,000 steps (51km!!) during our 3 days by walking everywhere. (although I think most of that was walking the corridors of the VC Museum or the grounds of Palatine Hill!!). Thank you for your taxi advice :)
Thanks so much for letting me know you found the video helpful, even if just to get the taxi to and from the airport. I agree, walking is one of the best ways to get around Rome as you really see it in a different way. Thank you for sharing your experience!
This is such great information, thank you. We were looking at Uber from the airport as we arrive at 1130pm based on information from another youtuber and to prebook to city center they want €110. With your comments we will just go to the taxi line and get one for the flat rate of 50 and make sure to confirm everything before we get in. Thanks!

You say that Uber only gives you the 'Black' cab/limo option, but my Uber app shows, and we have used recently the 'White' cab option in Rome. You might want to take another look at the app.
Yes, it's true that the Uber app shows white taxis. It means that Uber subcontracts the white taxis. What I meant when I said that the only option you get with Uber was Uber black, i.e. a limo driver, is that we don't have here the kind of Uber service where a regular person drives their car and acts as an Uber driver. That has been strictly forbidden here. So yes, you can get a white taxi through Uber as you could through another taxi app, or you will get an NCC (limo) driver.
My experience in my just concluded 5day trip to Rome 1. Drivers are honest, mostly drive by aged person, you are lucky if they know English, use google translate 2. One driver missed to start on the meter, but polite to say what you feel ok, give it me. We knew the rate while going out in tge morning from hotel to station 3. No issue with Amex card, tap or punch 4. After booking, generally taxi comes very first and they charge on the meter, 5 There is a nice Rank we find after we finshed the Vatican and went to the bridge to see the castle Sant'Angelo, Rank was next to Bridge entry. You can go tye beautiful restaurant just across the road(right to crissing) Locanda dell'Angelo Ristorante Pizzeria Braceria if you are hungry after tye visit. Just taste their 🍕, delicious.

You'll need to have some sort of data plan on your phone, as it works over the internet. It can be your own phone plan based on where you live, as long as you have data when you are travelling. If you use your own phone plan, make sure to find out what you will charged for using data when you are roaming. But as you say, you can also get an eSim for travel.
I love your channel! I go back to your videos all the time ❤ I just want to ask, we have a very early Vatican tour. We have to meet a guide at like 7:30. We want to take a taxi. I wanted to ask how early they are available? - thank you!!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! You can get taxis 24/7 (unless there is a taxi strike!) You will find them at taxi ranks all around the city. If you are staying at a hotel, you can have your concierge call one for you, if you like. Either way, I suggest getting a taxi by no later than 6:50, so you make it in plenty of time and can relax. Have a great visit!
@@kmjohnson1552 Yes, I have links in the description. I use Get Your Guide. There are a lot of options and you can read the reviews. To be honest most car service companies do a fine job and by booking in advance, you save yourself the stress of wondering what the price will be.
Thank you for the useful informations, we will be in Rome in September and I will try to heed your advice. I have just downloaded the Ittaxi app for convenience.
Thank you for this video. we were looking at the Leonardo express then taxi but we will probably just be better getting a taxi from the airport with the fixed fare
If you could walk to your hotel after arriving at Roma Termini, then it may be more economical, but if you have to take a taxi at Roma Termini to reach your hotel, it’s best to take a City of Rome taxi at the airport. Also with construction going on now in Piazza del Cinquecento, you have to walk farther down to the NE corner to find the queue and it’s a hassle. And scam white cabs are cruising the streets.
I love your channel! I’m curious what your plan is for when you’re much older and/ or one of you becomes unable to travel as much? Would you come back to the US to be near your kids?
Thank you! At the moment our plans are to stay here in Italy, but we also have the idea of moving back to the states someday, but it's not set in stone.
I (woman) have taken many white taxis within the city of Rome, and to and from the airport, and I have never been ripped off. Ever. I do speak Italian, though, and that might help, but in my experience they are trustworthy.
Yes, I agree with you. I mention several times in this video that I think most drivers are honest. Sadly, it's those few bad apples that give the rest of them a bad name. Glad you have also had a good experience!
Going in June and I’ve learned sooo much from you already 💖 Suggestions for breakfast before a very early morning tour? We are staying in the Castro Pretorio. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your kind comments! If you have an early tour, I would try to grab breakfast near your tour. If you are going to the Vatican, my top suggestion is SciaScia café. If you do want breakfast in Castro Pretorio, you can try Bar Rossi or Trombetta. There are also two bars right in from of Santa Maria Maggiore that open really early. Both are great options for an early breakfast. For June, you might find these videos helpful: th-cam.com/video/LCLU1MFDr4Y/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/qtXxkclB4bA/w-d-xo.html
LOL I LOVE SCIASCIA Cafe’, just remember there is a difference between chocolate coffee and chocolate capuce. If you go in there and ask for chocolate coffee you will get a tiny cup of very intense Espresso laced with equally intense dark chocolate. See if you can get a mound of Panna Cream to go with. Otherwise just remember to ask for Chocolate Capuce. I still make this mistake, it takes an astute customer or sharp Barista to remind me of the difference.
Take Elyssa’s tip on having a backup plan to heart. Rome is not a smooth even walk, navigating rough uneven cobblestones, crowded sidewalks, and distance will take its toll as also will the hot sun.

@@Romewise I mean the drivers are mostly aged person, seems to be above 60s...we don't see very often in this part of the world. curios to know whether they are driving to just pass time or for serious earning?
Well to be honest, since I take taxis quite often in Rome, I find that they range in age from mid-20s and up. But in Italy, usually when people have a job, they have it for life and so whoever you see driving a taxi is probably doing so as his long-term job. @@you4raj
Most taxi drivers in Rome were pretty good. I used the app and I went to taxi ranks without much trouble. At Fiumicino, however, I had trouble getting a taxi to agree to take me to the Spanish Steps area for the fixed price listed right on the side of the car. I called to all of the drivers and one agreed to take me for only 2€ more, which I accepted. If no one would have accepted, it would have been the Leonardo Express for me.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Wow, it's disappointing that so many drivers would refuse to honor the fixed rate. Good for you that you stood your ground!
Anytime you take a taxi at FCO to an area inside the Aurelian Walls, the Fixed Rate kicks in. You get in the cab and when you get out of the cab and get your luggage you pay 50 Euro. The only other option is the meter if you go outside the Walls. There is no agreement, you don’t make agreements, you don’t ask a taxi driver if s/he agrees with the fixed rate, you have to know where you are going. I simply place the fare on the seat if the driver violates the fixed fare, or the meter for that matter. I’ve had Rome taxi drivers charge me double over the meter. I pay the meter or the fixed fare.
@@TheRomanPilgriminPerson Excellent plan! I appreciate your method. My approach was to have the argument at the beginning of the ride rather than at the end.
I’m a big piece of mind guy. Are the black transportation a lot faster to get to my Airbnb and get my day started vs. taxi/train. Going next week. Great information. Thank you.
I'm right there with you! Time is money, especially on vacation! And I love avoiding stress, too. Thanks for watching and for letting me know you enjoyed the video and found it helpful!
We will be a party of 5 which includes 2 kids ages 3 and 7. Any tips for getting a taxi with a car seat? Are car seats required in taxis in Rome? Would 5 people be able to fit in a regular taxi?
Car seats are not required but if you have a family of five and also want a car seat, you'll need to request this. You can request these features when you booking using one of the apps I mentioned. Also if you stay at a hotel and ask your concierge to help, they can book for you by calling the taxi company. If you just arrive at a taxi rank, you'll have to wait for a car large enough for all of you. Five passengers cannot fit into a normal-sized sedan so you'll need a larger vehicle, usually a van. There are surcharges for extra people. You can see the rates here: romamobilita.it/en/moving-rome/using-taxi-service While this is an official page of Rome's transport service, there are outdated taxi rates as they have recently gone up. However, you can use this to see the supplemental charges for additional luggage and people.
If you are in a line for taxis, let them know you have 5 people, and the drivers will pass over you until a large enough car shows up. They are used to this issue and have an honor system among them.
Elyssa, you refer to the limousine type transportation as NCC. Is that a term used by locals? For example,iIf I want to have my hotel call a car of this type for me, should I refer to it as NCC?
Not so much locals but anyone in the tourism industry in Rome knows what it is - it means "noleggio con conducente" or, car hire with chauffeur. Yes, if you ask your hotel to arrange for an NCC car for you, they will know exactly what you mean.
Thank you so much! And thanks for your compliments on my turtleneck, it's on of my favorite sweaters. The brand is Theory and I bought it a couple of years ago in the USA.
Very helpful video!!! thanks… At 2-3 o’clock in the morning from Fiumicino airport to city of rome (inside Aurelian walls ) the rate for the taxi is also 50 euros?
All your videos are quite informative and to the point. We arrive in Rome via a cruise ship, then a train to Roma termini at the end of April and plan take a taxi from the train station to our accommodation on Via Giulia; I presume there is a taxi station just outside the train station. Can give us a ball park figure of how much can we expect to pay for the ride? Thank you.
Thank you for your kind comments. As I mentioned in the video at 12:36, you can expect to pay somewhere between 12-18 Euros for a ride from Termini to somewhere in the city center. In the description, I also link to a rate estimator website you can use.
Thanks for watching. Large vehicles that can accommodate 6 passengers are uncommon so you might be able to find them just by waiting until one comes along at a taxi stand, but you would be better off using an app to book.
Hi, at around 17:20 you had said that if taking taxi from FCO to somewhere outside the Aurelian Walls that the taxi driver will turn on the meter and you would be expected to pay whatever is on the meter. Earlier you had mentioned (11:30) that it was capped at 73 Euros. Is this still correct ? We are taking taxi from FCO to outside the Aurelian Walls (Mercure Roma Piazza Bologna). Thank you.
Yes that is still the official tariff. The rate is not set at 50€ if you go from Fiumicino to a location outside the Aurelian Walls. And as long as it's within the GRA (ring road), which Piazza Bologna is, then the rate is called at 73 Euros.
There should be. If you don't see one immediately, one should arrive soon. To be really sure, you could book a car service in advance. It costs more but gives you peace of mind.
Thanks for the very helpful video. I was wondering if you know the answer to this question. Will any taxi in Rome take you outside the city? For example to another city in Lazio over an hour away.
If you are looking to go that far outside Rome, you will likely need to book a private (NCC) car service in advance. If you just hop into a white city taxi, it is unlikely they will take you that far, but you can ask. To be sure, I'd look into public transportation options or booking a car service. Try www.rome2rio.com to see all your options.
Great video! Thank you kindly. I was wondering if you know what vehicle or transportation service would be good to book ahead of time from Milan Airport to downtown milan?
Thanks so much! I am not a Milan expert but I imagine you could book a car service from one of the Milan airports to the center. I suggest starting with GetYourGuide, and looking for Milan airport. You'll find a lot of options there.
Grazie mille! My husband uses a wheelchair. Last year, I rented places near taxi stands but after dinners we needed to call for a taxi.
😅@@Romewise
Asking if a driver has a white taxi won’t help you. Many scam drivers have white taxis. You need to look at the doors for the City of Rome logo. A scam white taxi will not have the City of Rome logo on the door.
And hailing a taxi on the street is a good way to attract a scam white taxi. You must always check the door for the City of Rome logo. I agree itTaxi is the best taxi APP IN Rome.
@@TheRomanPilgriminPerson Great additional tips!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you find my tips helpful!
Thank you

Thanks so much for letting me know you found my video helpful. Sorry you have had some bad experiences but thank you for sharing your tips!
Such a helpful video packed with all the information a tourist will need! I am visiting Rome next week! Thank you :)

Have fun! We will be arriving at the end of April.
Fabulous video, so informative. I'm downloading IT Taxi right now, thank you so much for all of this inside info.

@@Romewise Reading this post, Can you tell us what part of the taxi we can expect to see the meter?
The meter can be in different places depending on the driver and his/her car. You might see the meter on or near the rearview mirror or close to the radio in the center. Either way, the meter should be visible to you from where you sit. If you can't see the meter, ask the driver to show you where it is. @@apheenaroebuck-webb3385

Will I have to get an eSim or sim card to use the itTaxi app?
You'll need to have some sort of data plan on your phone, as it works over the internet. It can be your own phone plan based on where you live, as long as you have data when you are travelling. If you use your own phone plan, make sure to find out what you will charged for using data when you are roaming.
But as you say, you can also get an eSim for travel.
I love your channel! I go back to your videos all the time ❤
I just want to ask, we have a very early Vatican tour.

Thanks for watching! Both options are fine. Just make sure your accommodations are inside the Aurelian Walls!
Thanks for the very informative video. Question on the iTaxi app - when you’ve used it to call a taxi does the app tell you what the cost will be?

Thank you so much for your kind comments! If you have an early tour, I would try to grab breakfast near your tour. If you are going to the Vatican, my top suggestion is SciaScia café. If you do want breakfast in Castro Pretorio, you can try Bar Rossi or Trombetta. There are also two bars right in from of Santa Maria Maggiore that open really early. Both are great options for an early breakfast.

Thanks for the advice 👍
I’ll definitely take a look at that app, although walking will be my main way of getting around during the day.
Absolutely, I am a big fan of walking around Rome! But it's good to have a backup plan for when your feet give out!
Take Elyssa’s tip on having a backup plan to heart. Rome is not a smooth even walk, navigating rough uneven cobblestones, crowded sidewalks, and distance will take its toll as also will the hot sun.

You can see the rates here:
romamobilita.it/en/moving-rome/using-taxi-service
While this is an official page of Rome's transport service, there are outdated taxi rates as they have recently gone up. However, you can use this to see the supplemental charges for additional luggage and people.
awesome video but what if you need a white taxi van for 5 people and it is not at the front of the line?
If you are in a line for taxis, let them know you have 5 people, and the drivers will pass over you until a large enough car shows up. They are used to this issue and have an honor system among them.
Most excellent video!!
Thank you very much!
Great video, thank you. I could not see the link you mention about getting public transport from airport, any help on this please?

Grazie mille cara Elyssa 🤩
Thanks for watching!
Ben fatto! Potrebbe essere utile condividere le frasi necessarie quando si parla con un tassista! Grazie mille!
Grazie mille! Grazie anche del consiglio - lo tengo in considerazione per un prossimo video come questo.
Excelent video!! Many thanks!!
Glad you liked it! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

We will be in Rome in a few days. We land just after midnight on Sunday. Are there likely to be taxis available at this time? Thanks!
There should be. If you don't see one immediately, one should arrive soon. To be really sure, you could book a car service in advance. It costs more but gives you peace of mind.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Hi! Love these vids! I’m trying to book a car in advance but when I click the link it takes me to a general page. Any company recommendations?
Thanks so much! I have updated. the link so it should work now:

Hope that helps!
Thanks for sharing excellent informations
Glad it was helpful!
At least once, the restaurant couldn't get through to the taxi company, so we were stranded. We had issues finding taxis in Florence, too. Does ItTaxi work in Florence?
Thanks for sharing!! I'm sorry you had such a difficult time. Yes, I talk about this in the video - ITTaxi works throughout Italy. I hope it helps!
@@Romewise thank you so much! I don't know how I missed you saying itTaxi is all over Italy. 🤦♀️ But I appreciate you taking the time to specifically clarify Florence, especially since I know you've been spending time there.
No problem! It's a long video :) @@roaminghistorian2234
