    Great video! I'm so overwhelmed by the size and complexity of the multiple engine rooms of this ship! How anyone could have put all of those components together to make a ship run is just mind boggling!! And keeping them running must be a monumental task!

    What a beautiful clean engine room. I worked down the engine room too 30 yrs ago, out of Hong Kong and Australia. The technology has certainly changed a bit since then. Nice to see onboard a modern vessel, thanks for sharing that Bigfudge! Regards Tim

      Engine crew works from 0600/0800 till 1700 in "normal" operation. Some vessels keep sunday's off. I used to work in Maersk Line. Outside "normal" working hours only duty engineer is likely to be in the engine room for rounds and taking care of equipment alarms.
      The machinery and alarm system is designed this way of operation.

    To see a room as this is what I like to see!!!My dad was a draftsman for GE working with the steam turbines. I have worked on new techno machines to see all the under the deck workings is cool! Maybe not at first till it is run in and you get to know the sounds and feel of things.To me time would fly by since there is soooo much to over see!!! There must be a large crew to make sure she is running true. Just the electric panels when some thing bad to trouble shot . Thanks for showing this, some day I would like to see her in person! tanks.

    dear dave onan, the gear at the propeller shaft is a shaft generator.when I retired as chief engineer with P&O-Nedlloyd, this was standard on the fleet.one can run an alternator also as an electric motor, so I set myself a task to recoup waste energy from the main engine.when you set up a heat balance of a diesel engine, you notice that 30% of the input is wasted to the exhaust gases and the almost the same applies to the cooling water.so Maersk devised a system to recoup this waste by turning it into steam, which drives an alternator to feed the motor on the shaft.this had an enormous positive effect on the fuel consumption, but it made the installation a lot more complicated..

    I'm so glad I switched my skill sets towards construction,trades,automation,and engineering. If I'm not building something I'm fixing it.
    Welcome to the new world of automated shipping.
    The military seem to have more crews per ship then their civilian counterparts these days.
    I see private companies are really going all out on minimizing ship crew requirements for more profit returns.

    Alot of comments about not seeing any crew in the Engine room. The plant is so well automated the number of personnel needed to operate it is minimal. I saw a question about what the steam turbine was used for the replies were useless, what good is a turbine for heating bunker fuel, a use for steam yes, but heating fuel not so much. Are you using the turbine to run another generator that can be paralleled with the Diesel Generators. Just curious it is interesting that you would need both. Unless the boiler produces more steam than needed for hotel services (heating, water heating, galley, scullery, etc).

    • @goldCrystalhaze
      @goldCrystalhaze 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The steam turbine runs an electric generator, together on the same shaft with an exhaust gas turbine. The steam is produced from main engine exhaust gas boiler (heat energy that would otherwise be lost) and the exhaust gas turbine bleeds off gases from the main engine exhaust manifold. There are two sets of those turbines. The electricity produced is not only enough to sustain ship's load, it can (in some circumstances) supply power to the shaft generator which acts as motor, supplementing power to the propellers.

    What an incredible engine room! You obviously have access to the Triple E - I am interested to know - with the propulsion being so far aft from the accommodate block, do Engineers have their own mess/berths etc. near the engine room? Or do they have a long walk to work for their watch?! Also, out of interest, what is below the main accommodation superstructure on the Triple E? None of the plans I have seen show this. Is the space just ballast tanks and bunkers?

    If, hypothetically, the main engines did not have exhaust gas scrubbers, what would the exhaust note sound like, at the stack? Or would it sound nothing like a 'normal' diesel engine, because it does such low rpms (and cylinder fires)?

    • @onecanmadman
      @onecanmadman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      there is hardly any sound from the main engine at the funnel, even on engine with no scrubber. There is a low burbling sound from generator engine funnels as they are medium speed (like 700-900 rpm), there is a silencer in each exhaust so pretty quiet.

      "Free" steam is produced from the exhaust gas heat recovery system. Steam can be used for a variety of processes, including driving turbines to produce electricity for house load rather than using diesels and the additional fuel they would consume, to produce it instead.

      Steam would likely also be used to heat the bunker oil so it can be pumped to the engines for use.

    MEU TRABALHO ...DEUS obrigado por Tudo;
    E por esta imensa felicidade vivida no meu trabalho.
    E por isso hoje sou mais um entre os vencedores; Porque tive o saber e amor neste mundo escolhido. Até hoje sinto alegrias e Orgulho; E a cada dia ter como manter meu sorriso, e a poesia de não sentir cansado; Por isso Vivo hoje as recompensas e recordações; Que ainda me ensinam a viver. Entendo e Sei até então; Em todas as Lutas, Vitorias e Conquistadas que enfrento. Meu trabalho me ensina a viver.

    How many men on a ship like that and what's the need for so many electrical panels and water purifying? It almost looks like enough for a passenger liner. Seems like a bit of overkill. Still, being a machine head I love it.
