Hi Unmesh - amazing review, and thanks for objectivity and keeping us on our toes. Feedback is taken to the team, we'll continue refining the ML quality, the user experience and use the power of Photoshop and masking capabilities!
Thank you, Alexandru :) I know Photoshop's in good hands because of incredible people like you who want the best for the program. The improvements are drastic, and I can't wait to check out what's next!
May I take the opportunity here to express that you should invest so much into AI. Programs like Gigapixel AI or Sharpen AI are doing amazing, truly amazing job, and I would love to have the power of Adobe to do all that even better. Sharpen AI in particular allows me to deblur an image with a small camera shake, which is something you think would be impossible to do but it does it marvelously. It blows my mind each time I use it.
It's good to read that you're determined to focus on the masking capabilities - I certainly do hope that includes adding manual masking overrides into this tool. And maybe someday, Adobe will work with making the paint/erase cursor more visible in the workspace so that most of us don't have to guess where it is on a neutral background. Sigh ...
@PiXimperfect Hey Unmesh, thank you so much for making such a video like this. Please keep make the videos like this about negativities with Photoshop. Because there are so many wrong things in Photoshop beside of good ones. We can send to you some serious problems or developing requirements for Photoshop if you start a post on your TH-cam or Instagram. Because your videos are cared for by Adobe developers. Be our voice :) (sorry for bad english)
► For those of you who have concerns over the absence of manual focus masking at 10:59: Many of you are suggesting using the masking tools inside neural filters. Please note that it is nothing but a simple mask that you can anyway add in Photoshop, and it only controls in which areas the "overall" effect shows up or hides (whether blurred or in focus). That's a good idea if you want to bring back certain things, and it might work in some cases. However, it may result in unnecessary halos. Also, here's the actual problem; how will you defocus the things that are mistakenly kept in focus? The only way to do that is adding blur later, manually, defeating this feature's purpose. It isn't like Luminar's Portrait Bokeh AI, where you can absolutely control which areas to blur and which ones to keep in focus.
Thanks for this. It’s good to see the difference. I use Lightroom, Luminar Ai and Photoshop for my post production. I’m so gutted I can’t afford to pay for the course as I was super excited to continue learning from it. I just wished there was a cheaper payment plan over a longer period of time.
Hi Shaun, those three trilogies are the same I use from time to time! Thank you so much for watching and your interest in the course. No worries, as long as you are subscribed to PiXimperfect, I will try my best to deliver good quality free educational content as well :) Thanks so much for your support!
Thanks for the review. You can manipulate the mask in Depth Blur - look at the toolbar on the left hand-side (circle with + and circle with -). As soon as you click on one of them you can use the "Select subject", "Invert", etc then add or subtract from the mask using the circle with + or circle with - .
Hi Lyne, thank you for your feedback. But those tools are only for selections and create a simple mask. They can remove the effect from certain areas just as a normal mask would, but will not add blur (defocus) in areas where required.
you are right. I myself tried using those plus and minus sign. you can actually add or remove the neural filter effect from any area in your image. as there is no flow option to make the mask smooth. you can always use opacity in top left corner. it will act as a flow for masking.
Hi Unmesh, great video! I've found the easiest way to fix the incorrect selection issues is by outputting the depth blur as a smart filter and then using the attached mask to remove the blur from the areas in which you want to restore the sharpness :)
That's a good idea, and it might work in some cases. However, it's nothing but a regular mask that you could add later anyway. Here's the problem; how will you defocus the things that are mistakenly kept in focus? The only way to do that is adding blur later, manually, defeating this feature's purpose.
@@PiXimperfect or you could use the "brush" that's integrated in photoshop to help bring focus directly (when applying the depth blur a set of tools appear on the left side the "circle with a +" and the "circle with a -" they're still a bit buggy and inaccurate but they get the job done). hopefully this comment makes sense haha
I'm interested to find out .... how did you get the Depth Map Output Only to export in a way it can be used as a layer mask? I'm trying to figure it out and can't...
You are the best, piximperfect! glad to discover your channel! I hope Adobe will include a paint brush where we could still paint the areas that needs to be blurred or sharpen that is not detected by the focus subject option. but this is a great improvement! Thanks Adobe!
Hello Unmesh. I'm so happy that I found you teaching Photoshop, but too late, you're teaching so good I spend a big amount of money to learn photoshop in Afghanistan, but the teachers wasn't able to teach me and Photoshop was getting harder to learn for me, and then I searched to learn photoshop online, and I found your video "Photoshop Tutorial for complete beginners' and I knew that I can learn photoshop from you because your teaching method is different. I just want your instruction to learn photoshop. A bundle of thanks.
What you didn’t touch on was the ability to export the photoshop depth blur as a layer mask. That’s the output you would go for for more “photoshop” customisation
I just happened on you via a Google news link. Your tutorials are awesome. I'll be watching more. Great production in the process of your creating/sharing and great videos from what I've seen so far
It’s great to see Adobe respond to constructive criticism. These technologies will only get better. Right now though it’s a million miles away from a real photo with shallow depth of field.

Great discussion, there is so much to learn here. What more amazing is it's free knowledge. Thank you so much! Learning life is a only thing which can make you a perfect personality human being
Unmesh, I agree with all of your points. I've been testing this beta feature out for a bit, and it makes some very odd choices, e.g., keeping portions of the background in focus, while blurring other parts of the same object. And, as you say, the selected focus is entirely too sharp. I realize that this is a beta tool, and Adobe is using us to get feedback in order to know what works, what doesn't and what do people really need, but I'm surprised that they haven't added tools for manually adjusting the mask. They've got all that technology in PS, and it doesn't seem too hard to add it into this tool. As it is, I can run the blur feature twice and mask out any pieces I don't want, blending two images. But at that point, I can just do it the old fashioned way.
No one will care about photography either. It's becoming a 'human not required' activity. People should be careful what they wish for. You are redundant.
Thanks Unmesh! Great insights and review as always. Loved the comparison with Luminar. As a photographer I do feel isn't it easier creating natural blur by shooting f/1.8 at 85mm or higher? What are your thoughts please?
May I suggest that you make one or more tutorials on how to repair typical errors in depth maps, from the new version of depth blur (with depth map only ticked).
A VIDEO SUGGESTION. Hey bro... No words about your videos. Just perfect always... i really love to watch total lesson without missing a single second. Let's get into the question. "I just want to learn an smart and accurate way to fix the cloths. Messy wrinkles are the main." I think you got the point... and Thank you so much much much for your every lesson. ❤️
****New amazing PS22 feature**** --> how to make a nice picture taken on $3k camera and $2k lens look like it's been shot on iPhone portrait mode. I'm joking, of course. I love having lots of features and could be useful indeed when used in a tasteful way. Thank you for sharing as always!
Although the Depth Blur missed elements to keep in focus like the girls backpack, if you output as a layer, you can use a quick mask and paint back the backpack from the layer below, so there is a workaround. The bush to the left looked best with some blur which Luminar AI did. All in all they both have their strengths. Luminars brushes are very useful though for masking areas.
You could bring back areas that have been blurred mistakenly by outputing the result as a new layer, then masking or the parts that shouldn't be blurred to show the unedited image underneath. It's not perfect but it would do the job.
In their defense, it's still in Beta. But again, yes, there are so many features inside of Adobe that if they can find a way to make them work together, it will be a massive success!
Very sharp review. I noticed you just had to turn on the Depth Blur. I had to download all the Neural Filters before using. Was yours like that? I would have thought it would have downloaded with the upgrade. It didn't take long, I'm not upset because it's not a big deal, just curious. And "jaggery" would be Mick Jaggery, or what you wanted was jagged. You can add a "Y" or "...ish". You really do speak excellent English, though. I'm a big fan and have learned a lot from you.
Thank you for demonstrating these features, good work. It‘s a nice touch to have these options in PS. However, since it’s still not working perfectly, it turns out that you end up fiddling with software glitches in time consuming adjustments and repairs. Adding grain to correct a photo? Wow... My take for everybody would be to master your camera and know more about photography, e. g. DOF settings for starters.
