I love that Instagram's algorithm concluded that because Drew kept buying everything they advertised to him, he must be going through something and needs mental health apps.
In one of his "buying everything" videos he opened instagram at the end to see what they'd advertise to him after all that and it was an ad to join a clinical trial for depression lmao
I have to say it is very dangerous how obsessed we are with being productive It's definitely important to cut out things that make us feel like shit, but it's also important to remember that spending time doing things we love, even if they may not be productive or beneficial to society, is not a waste of time.
Quick tip: You actually don’t have to wait till the end of a free trial to cancel. You can cancel immediately after entering your information and the trial will still last the whole week.
Where does he live? 'cause I live in a city and you can't juse "go outside your house" for fun, you only go out if you have to, there's no point going outside for fun if someone is going to stab and rob you or hit you with their car. Maybe if you live in a nice little rural town with 2000 people who all know each other and there's no crime, but it's 2023, in urban societies you go outside on the street sparingly, unless you're totally comfortable with being shot if someone thinks you looked at them the wrong way, which, surprisingly, ost of us aren't comfortable with, so you can't blame people. Like the actual privilege honestly, of living somewhere so nice you don't have to worry about gang crime and people driving on meth while you're trying to walk to the store, but understand it's not as simple as "lol go outside bro" in most parts of this world, there are even countries where you can't go outside at certain times, it's literally illegal. So not shocking to me at all, not even a tiny bit.

Facebook/IG ads don't have settings to target people based on things like that. There's a lot that's against their policies, and things like diagnosis are definitely not one of the interests you can select. These ads are most likely targeted based on age/school situation, and then the more you engage with them, the more you'll get. Also, you can go into your settings and see all the topics you're being targeted based on, and you can eliminate the ones that you don't want to be targeted by. Facebook is absolutely scummy but there's a lot you can do to personalize your "experience" on the app, people just don't know about it.
Drew's simultaneous awareness of and subjection to toxic dopamine cycles is very relatable. People always assume once you identify a problem the next step is to fix it, but nah sometimes you just have a problem you're aware of now lmao
"Toxic dopamine cycles" is one of the most unhinged pseudoscientific quips I've ever heard. Like your endocrine system is poisoning you because you play on your phone. That's not how any of this works. Chill.

Drew, as someone with ADHD, THANK YOU for calling out how predatory these apps are. They claim to help us with our disability and then use it against us to make a profit. It would be viewed as despicable with any other disability, but because adult ADHD is so minimized and we get told our struggles are our fault, people don't care.
Thanks to those ads I will never be sure if I seriously have ADHD or I just think I have it to explain problems I face. There are a few people who are allergic to gluten or lactose or etc. but since 90% of the people claiming to be allergic are lying just to be quirky or to receive more attention etc. the people with the real problem suffer from the banalization of their struggles. All the people claiming to have ADHD because they don't want to admit they are just lazy are undermining the efforts of the people with real ADHD struggling with their day to day life. We already saw this with the "autistic spectrum" which is real... for some, but not for a lot claiming to be "on the spectrum". This is my personal opinion, based on common sense.
I’m a stage actor and I was having trouble figuring out where to put cheekbone contour. Then I realized that you’re the perfect example of where contour should go- you have very defined cheekbones! I’ve been using you as a reference, and my contour is finally on point! Thank you for your service, Drew!
You find the perfect place to put contour by sucking in your cheeks. It helps you see where the hollows of your cheeks naturally are and where the natural shadow would fall. Always blend upwards and towards the ear and the outer face because towards the nose, cheeks tend to be less sunken in. I hope that can be somewhat helpful for the next time you contour!
As someone with ADHD- I really can't express enough how important non-screen hobbies are for taking over that background nagging part of the brain. If knitting/crocheting/etc isn't your thing, needle felting is INCREDIBLY fun, and really helps relieve that restless energy
I've been loving crochet lately - it's perfect for keeping my hands and part of my brain busy whilst i occupy the rest of my brain with screen time :) (I probably have ADHD too, naturally) If I wasn't so against letting myself keep sharp things, I'd probably love needle felting - it's a hobby based on just stabbing things till you like them. And socially acceptable and legal stabby stabbies are very fun.
I love carrying around a tiny little notebook to take out whenever I have the impulse to reach for my phone instead. I saw someone do that in a TH-cam video, and I just thought it was such a neat way to replace that impulse with something less distracting
I also love doing crochet to occupy my hands! I especially love large projects like blankets because they are such a mindless repetitive stitch. I often crochet while in a lecture or when listening to music, podcasts, video essays, and streams. It’s super great to just have something to keep you busy, and for me, helps me to keep from spacing out in class lol
"Well I finally did it, I went the entire day without looking at any screens. But I should check the time on my watch to make sure the day is actually done." ... "Shit"
I have Tourette’s and people would just tell me straight up to do dopamine fasts because “Tourette’s is caused by too much dopamine stop being happy” what ended up helping with my Tourette’s was actually just anxiety management
YOOO Tourette's gang! The dopamine theory is irritating, I'm not gonna make myself depressed to stop ticcing. Also if you don't mind me asking, how did you go about managing your anxiety? Terrible coprolalia on my end
I have OCD and my parents refuse to accept that the obsessive behavior was developed because for years I had no idea how to manage my stress. Just refusing to give into my compulsive need to count every part of the door 3 times before I leave the room wouldn’t make it go away. It just means I have no stress output and fighting my compulsions makes me super stressed. Meaning I’m compelled to do it more I dunno if your situation is super similar but I can imagine you relate
Yoooo unspecified tic disorder here 😂 Yeah I’ve had tics all my life and they aren’t going away any time soon. I’m on meds for them that kind of help? But I don’t see how reducing screen time helps…I’ve never heard of that one.
I actually learned a lot about having grit in my college prep class. A huge part of making goals is never to make them seem like you're avoiding anything. It's more about adding something new to your life. The human mind can't work on restrictions but it can work on new experiences. So if you want to be healthier for example don't make it about cutting out candy, make it about trying a new vegetable with your dinner meal. Sure, it might not be something you end up enjoying but supplementing out the old stuff by just trying something healthier for your brain or body is really what will encourage you to keep going.

For me it was rooted in the fear that if I stop, I’ll lose track of the conversation and be outcast. Not just that I’d be left behind, but that stopping looking at discourse for even a moment would make me slip up and commit faux pass. Internet discourse moves so fast, and once something is decided everyone likes to pretend that they knew it all along. To not know is to show vulnerability, and once you’re vulnerable you will be cannibalized by the colony. What helped me is remembering that a whole world exists outside internet discourse. Even if I commit internet faux pass, I’m still safe, I’m still here, I’m still breathing. Nothing material has changed, and I have a support system of people outside of niche internet communities who also exist and breath and live just like I do. Remembering this makes social media feel much less urgent, and curbs my desire to open and scroll.

As someone who has ADHD and struggles with remembering the most basic things and paying attention, I will admit that whenever I see ads for adhd specific apps I am tempted to download. They all promise a life that I desperately want; to not struggle with focus and memory as much. It’s always so disappointing to see that it’s really just people exploiting the very things those with ADHD struggle with.
As someone who got diagnosed with ADHD, I've learned the greatest medicine for it is reading, painting, playing instruments, going outside, and NOT GOING ON MY PHONE!
@Skylark as someone who's had ADHD since way before the internet was everywhere (and there weren't gonna be smartphones for another decade or 2), those things do not treat ADHD. It's present all the time. Doing things you like to do are always easier to focus on than things you *need* to do. Painting and going outside will help 0 ADHD people focus in math class or manage our time better or prioritize tasks without it constantly being a struggle.
I feel this. I don't think people realise that adhd can absolutely cripple your day to day life. do you think I WANT to be lying on the sofa staring at the ceiling for an hour mentally berating myself because I can't get up and do the dishes? of course not. it's not a choice, it's horrible

What about just listening to a podcast or music or a video, while doing something else? When cutting out things like social media and screens in general, it’s definitely important to replace them with other things, like hanging out with friends, reading books, discovering or re-discovering a hobby, going outside, joining a club, something! If you don’t replace the digital entertainment, you’re just gonna feel sad and bored and go straight back to it then say “I don’t want to try giving up my phone again, cause it didn’t work and just made me want to go on it even more”.
Depression definitely makes things harder, especially if you have the symptom where you can’t enjoy things as much anymore. Makes it hard to replace hobbies because some hobbies now make you upset. Therapy is good
Omg yes. I’ve cut out all of social media out of my life and instead found new hobbies. My mental health is so much better now (not perfect ofc but better). I’m not really tempted to go back to using social media anymore. I’m gladly staying out of the loop lol
Yes. I mentally devided the different uses of screens into "stuff that basically only makes me feel worse" and "stuff that is mostly cool, I just do it too much". The first category (instagram, Tumblr, Reddit) I just deleted entirely and never missed. But for the second category, I too have found that just doing other things is way more effective than cutting them down. Taking my time to bake something and making plans to play D&D in the evening cuts down my time on TH-cam effortlessly, unlike "only x amount of time today" rules, which just stress me out.

Its literally a business tactic more then a pro consumer move though. Binge watching on the other end does give the consumer more power and is a move that favors them more. Isn't that how all advertising works? Heck, isn't that how all PRODUCTS work? If you don't target those who need the product, then how do you succeed? It's like saying doctors are predatory because they target sick people for treatment.
@@SeraphsWitness I'm pretty sure they mean, y'know, targeting people with *memory problems* for a 7 day free trial that if they don't *remember* to cancel after those days it charges them a ton of money which they wouldn't recall spending and then these apps don't give refunds because the contract that no one reads says they won't. Its not really about what demographic they target, it's about what they do once they've caught the attention of those demographics; and what they do is specifically something that will harm the people they're targeting more than help them. That's what's predatory about the marketing/targeting.
@@marsh.al.mel0w162 A 7-day free trial is not predatory. It's a pretty standard industry practice. At what point do you hold consumers responsible for what they decide to purchase? Why blame a company for their business model rather than blame the consumer for making a foolish purchase? This is backwards thinking. There's nothing "predatory" about that. "Predatory" paints the picture of an ill-motived party taking advantage of someone who cannot possibly know better. Predatory would be setting up Pay-Day loan centers in low-income areas and charging 400% interest. And even then, I find it hard to not blame the foolish consumer. That's not what this situation is.
@@SeraphsWitness Personally I don't hold the consumer responsible when a company automatically starts charging after seven days when they try to get people who are likely to forget that they are going to charge.

You find the perfect place to put contour by sucking in your cheeks. It helps you see where the hollows of your cheeks naturally are and where the natural shadow would fall. I've been loving crochet lately - it's perfect for keeping my hands and part of my brain busy whilst i occupy the rest of my brain with screen time :) (I probably have ADHD too, naturally)
If I wasn't so against letting myself keep sharp things, I'd probably love needle felting - it's a hobby based on just stabbing things till you like them. And socially acceptable and legal stabby stabbies are very fun.
I sew or draw, but I always have a video playing in the background 😨
I love carrying around a tiny little notebook to take out whenever I have the impulse to reach for my phone instead. I saw someone do that in a TH-cam video, and I just thought it was such a neat way to replace that impulse with something less distracting
I also love doing crochet to occupy my hands! I especially love large projects like blankets because they are such a mindless repetitive stitch.

Pretty much bi-monthly I decide that I’m only negatively fueling my ADHD with my smart phone and seriously consider switching to an old school flip phone.
Then I immediately start to rationalize why I ‘need’ my phone and hyperventilate at the idea of not being able to immediately find info about the random questions I simply ‘need’ answered.
Ya know, like who the actor in the movie I’m watching is currently dating, or why was the tapeworm diet a real thing, or what areas have the highest amount of light/noise pollution.
I think after I get unpacked I might make one of the cardboard boxes into a makeshift phone ‘time out’ box. (Psh, yeah right 🙄)
ADHD ain't real
as someone who also used to be addicted to twitter, I had the same “but I don’t want to miss out on what everyone is talking about!” concern as Drew. The thing that helped the most was realizing, like, no- no, I *do* want to miss out actually because nothing good has ever been talked about on that hellsite
deadass when I stopped using social media like that, my mental health got so much better. I try to use it sparingly now as a treat, like someone who cares about their physical health would do with junk food
i used to have my feed carefully cultivated to only show me fanart and non-discourse fan posts, but ever since twt became barely held together with duct tape and i started getting bombarded with drama, i realized this is 100% true. i've gone from being on the app all day, to only spending short 10-15 minute bursts once or twice a day to check for new art since i know if i spend more time i end up just getting upset and frustrated.
yessss same, for me it was when the Russia-urkaine war started and I felt bad not looking every day. but then you just realize that no, you're not a bad person for doing X thing and it's fine to prioritize your own mental health. glad you got off that gross site
@@mysideacc2770 my twt feed used to be more curated too. I would spend 2hours like Drew since all I ever encountered were cats and things I personally found funny (plus the occasional politics or brain dead takes) but now since Elon’s taken over, my feed has been littered with sports for some reason so I never use Twitter anymore.
Drew really took daylight savings seriously this year. Sprang his whole upload schedule two weeks forward!
My house actually came with one of those phone box things built into it, it's called "drawer in the kitchen" and it makes putting my phone away fun AND easy!
I’m so glad you addressed the wellness app thing.

The day I uninstalled Facebook years ago, my life kinda crumbled away, cuz I never noticed it was the most important thing I had. 80% of my socialization came from facebook, i spent the day on facebook groups being well known, but wasting time in meaningless arguments, caring about shit that didn't matter. Even so I'd rather have my current life than coming back to those wasted days, and I'm worried about the multiple twitter randos and reddit admins who spend their days stressed with those things
I ditched twitter in 2021 and I’m so glad I did, that site ruined by ability to communicate with people
"How can i train my brain to enjoy what I'm doing if in the back of my I head I feel the need to always be doing something else"

Okay but these new videos are weirdly comforting, like it's not just me but the majority of us feel attached to our phones and we've all acknowledged it's bad but we still feel helpless. Kinda motivational ngl
I mean it’s kinda required to have a phone, for work, for personal life, and for enjoyment. And if you don’t you’ll be made fun of. No one should feel guilty for being attached to their phones, the only guilty people all the phone and app companies exploiting that attachment
@@placeholderdoe I don't think it's good to accept the fact that you're addicted to your phone and not feel any guilt about it. The dependency and constant need for stimulation that we experience is unhealthy and damaging in so many ways.
@@poooopoo I agree that it’s unhealthy, but the guilt isn’t on us. It’s the people who designed the phones and apps to make them addictive and continue to
What about just listening to a podcast or music or a video, while doing something else? I feel like that's sort of a good compromise for me where I don't feel under-stimulated OR as if I'm wasting my life. Seek out educational content and also do something productive IRL at the same time.
On a side note, phones suck compared to using a laptop IMO, and I figure the only reason they got popular is because other people aren't on disability and actually need to leave their homes every day. Remember visiting actual websites on actual computers?
He described my experience and exact attachment to twitter to a T. I hate it and everyone is dumb and it just makes me angry but I can’t help but get sucked into the anger vortex. So I finally log out to cleanse my mind then am hit with this overwhelming fear that people are going to say something about me and I won’t be there to see it and defend myself. So I log back in and get sucked in all over again. It’s a disease lol.
When cutting out things like social media and screens in general, it’s definitely important to replace them with other things, like hanging out with friends, reading books, discovering or re-discovering a hobby, going outside, joining a club, something! If you don’t replace the digital entertainment, you’re just gonna feel sad and bored and go straight back to it then say “I don’t want to try giving up my phone again, cause it didn’t work and just made me want to go on it even more”.
totally agree, deleting instagram is the best thing i’ve ever done
i wish so badly i could do those things but my covid fear makes me stay inside
I laughed way too hard at the little moment after the calendar said to cut out filming

I’ve watched this video like 5 or 6 times, and this has never happened before, but the part where Drew snaps at his son when he asked him to play football made me genuinely emotional. I got upset hearing Drew, pretending to be a child, sadly say “Sorry, Papa”. I want to give that child a hug and the child doesn’t even exist. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.

Wow, the binge watching rant was spot on. The sense of community is definitely a big point in favor of HBO
Its literally a business tactic more then a pro consumer move though. Binge watching on the other end does give the consumer more power and is a move that favors them more. The weekly releases and having the people do the marketing for the companies and be the hype machine for the shows to feel part of an artificial sense of community is in their favor, not ours.
@@charpool169 Oh, fully aware that is a business tactic and, for me, there's nothing wrong with it. It is not a zero sum game, as long as people enjoy it. I'm happy with the trade off of less choosing power (on whether to watch 1 or 5 episodes at a time) from time to time to be able to create a ritual with friends and talk about a certain episode on twitter.
Honestly that's how I feel about content creators getting early access to games. The internet will be spoiling it left and right, meanwhile I'm unable to play it for at least another week.
Too bad HBO is getting rid of a lot the shows that would foster that community
I hate it when shows that are steaming only release weekly and I can’t choose when to watch them or skip around, but at the same time I don’t like it when TV shows are filmed like a 12 hour movie ie with binging in mind
7:30 That hurt to hear. So many of us have phone addictions, and for people my age and younger, they've been issues our entire lives. Lately, I've cringed at the amount of time I waste on my phone when my mental health is bad and how much my phone perpetuates that.
What was said here genuinely made me go reset all my app timers to a lower number, and all day, I've been trying to get back into my old hobbies.
I know you didn't wanna get existential, Drew, but you did. And I'm so happy that you did.
Don't blame yourself / beat yourself up for how much time you spend interacting with technology. Those corporations pay psychologists a lot of money to help make their products as addicting as possible, and most people still operate on the absolute bonkers assumption that a corporation won't do anything to hurt it's customers.
I'm reading this on my phone and I can feel my heart rising, yk what I mean?
This is so cute, I hope you can get the positive affects for your mental health that you’re looking for :)
Listen bro it's hard to leave my phone since I have many things going on with my life I feel like I can't sit without the phone I feel like it's almost escapism to me but idk how to stop it but at the same time I don't want to feel miserable all the time
It's definitely a gross feedback loop. I scroll because I'm too anxious for something engaging, then I ended up anxious because I'm wasting time.
i know the bit is to comment something a bit mean but i just wanna say u have helped me during my worst anxiety attacks to just enjoy something in the most fearful moments of my life. thank you, genuinely drew. you are appreciated more than you know.
this comment is very wholesome. I hope your anxiety attacks get better or go away altogether!
I really do feel for you in regard to your anxiety issues. I definitely know how awful that is. I have dealt with severe anxiety issues since I started Jr. High school and that was 1978. So it has been a VERY long time. I didn't just take it on and I didn't even know what exactly was wrong with me for over 30 years. I finally got help in 2010 and have coped a bit better, but I definitely still have those days when I am in horror most of the day. I waited WAY too long to do anything about it and I am paying the price now.
So please get help if you haven't already because the sooner, the better. I sincerely hope and pray that you are able to overcome it and not feel so fearful all the time. I certainly know just how that can alter your day to day life in negative ways. It's absolutely not fun. Take care and God bless.

Dopamine "fasting" is actually extremely beneficial though.
@@JonezBBQ Definitely. It's just the line between, "allowing yourself to enjoy technology, without getting addicted, and taking time away from it". And, "all technology is bad, and you are a bad person for enjoying it." Can be fuzzied pretty easily.
@@ii_caelus_ii oh no I understand that completely. Everything in moderation. The problem nowadays is just that everything is basically instantaneous gratification, and our rewards systems are skewed. And the effective way to counter that is to stop participating in that instantaneous gratification.

Thank you for highlighting the predatory marketing towards adhd ppl. When you have adhd the best way to remember things is to externalize them. In my experience apps just set me up for subscriptions I forget about. Signs, post it notes, other people’s support or a box 😂 tend to work better.

Love the slight edge in Drew's humour when he talks about the predatory practices of wellness apps, the way they target the vulnerable specifically
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Drew said that the advertising and apps catered to those who have ADHD or the like or things that would lend itself to having memory troubles. Does that not seem ill-motivated? I don't know, it seems like that's what it is, a ploy to get money off of people they know will more likely fall into that trap. Not that none of the fault can fall on the consumer, but it still seems off to me. (Not trying to be rude btw that was just the vibe I got from the original comment so I wanted to add the reasoning I thought they might be using)
