  • On particularly large or tough people it can be easier to massage them by using your feet and walking on them. You can also click their back this way.
This is a demonstration in my September 2023 London Advanced Raynor Massage Course where my student, Clementine, clicks my back and demonstrates other techniques that can be used to massage people using your feet.
Massaging the back and clicking the spine using the feet, also known as barefoot massage or Ashiatsu massage, can offer several benefits:
Deep Tissue Release: The pressure applied by the feet during barefoot massage can reach deeper layers of muscle tissue compared to traditional hand massage. This can effectively release tension, knots, and adhesions in the muscles, providing relief from chronic pain and stiffness.
Spinal Alignment: Barefoot massage techniques can help align the spine by applying controlled pressure along the length of the vertebral column. This can help alleviate spinal misalignments, improve posture, and reduce discomfort associated with conditions such as scoliosis or herniated discs.
Increased Circulation: The broad, even pressure applied by the feet during barefoot massage can stimulate circulation in the back muscles and surrounding tissues. Improved circulation helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the cells while removing metabolic waste products, promoting tissue healing and overall health.
Improved Range of Motion: Barefoot massage techniques can help increase flexibility and range of motion in the spine and surrounding joints by releasing tension and restoring mobility to tight or restricted areas. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals with limited mobility due to injury, illness, or sedentary lifestyle.
Enhanced Relaxation: Despite the deeper pressure involved, barefoot massage can induce a profound sense of relaxation and well-being. The rhythmic, flowing movements of the therapist's feet can help calm the nervous system, reduce stress levels, and promote a state of deep relaxation.
Efficient Technique: Barefoot massage allows therapists to apply consistent pressure over a larger surface area, covering more ground in less time compared to traditional hand massage. This can make the massage session more efficient and effective, especially for clients with larger body types or extensive areas of tension.
Balanced Energy Flow: In Eastern medicine traditions such as Shiatsu and Thai massage, the feet are considered powerful energy channels connected to various organs and systems in the body. Barefoot massage techniques can help balance the flow of energy (Qi or Prana) along these meridians, promoting overall health and vitality.
Safe and Comfortable: When performed by a trained and skilled therapist, barefoot massage is safe and comfortable for most clients. The therapist can adjust the pressure and technique to suit the client's preferences and needs, ensuring a customized and enjoyable massage experience.
Overall, barefoot massage techniques can offer a unique and effective approach to addressing tension, pain, and discomfort in the back and spine, promoting relaxation, mobility, and overall well-being.

Lol no way I could have anyone stand on the bottom of my foot. I feel like my feet would definitely cramp in that position ☹️😅

I think it’s beneficial to do as you say but I would not have it as an absolute rule for a healthy person
