I was so scared to read piranesi because I heard so many people say they had no idea what was going on so I put it off but I literally just read it 2 days ago and it's become one of my new faves. I think Susanna Clarke did such a phenomenal job unraveling everything in a way where I was never too lost that I just gave up but also hooked enough to keep going and figure out what was going on.
With Piranesi, it's a book that's very reader-specific. People with certain experiences (I don't want to put them here because it might be a spoiler for some people) tend to love it, and others don't usually like it that much or completely hate it. I loved it, but I see why some people are like 🤨. Unhoneymooners was fun but absolutely forgettable. I hated Every Summer After, but it's because I hate the trope. Can't say anything about the writing because I usually have very different expectations from romance novels vs. literary fiction or fantasy.
ah I'm so sorry you didn't click with Piranesi! After reading that book I was sooo obsessed with it and bought copies for my mother and mother in law and a physical copy for our house so my husband could read it too. I just loved it. I could *see* the book playing out like a movie in my head. It was wonderful imagining the statues and everything. I really would love to hear your thoughts in a spoiler video.
I love how different everyone’s experiences are! I’m curious about JSAMN now too, but more because I’d love to see the author’s range (from what I understand, the writing styles are very different from one another)
@@ebnovels Absolutely! The book community would be so boring without different experiences/opinions. I’ve heard the same thing about the two books being very different. I’ll pick it up the next time I’m in the mood for a chunky book.
I had a hard time with Piranesi in the first third or so. Almost DNF'd it. I did stick with it and did like it in the end, but not to the extent many people apparently did. I loved Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by her so maybe I went in with the wrong expectations. I have finally arrived at the Stormlight Archive part of my Cosmere journey, so I am reading The Way of Kings at the moment. Only a few chapters in so far, but I'm already loving it.
Please make a spoiler video for Piranesi. I'm dying to know what you thought it was vs what it turned out to be. I rated it 3 stars, I thought it was fine and since it's so short I didn't feel like my time was wasted when I read the end.
Piranesi was solid. It reminded me a lot of Angel's Egg but instead of leaving me with a sense of melancholy, it left me feeling very peaceful. It was a nice feeling.
I'm so glad i finally read Stormlight, they are so so so so good. Love Kaladin, Dalinar, Navani, Syl, Adolin, Shallan, etc etc. Thank you Brandon for these wonderful characters!
❤it; Yes, do a Piranesi spoiler vid. I don’t want to read it but super curious about your take. I really loved UnHoneyMooners too. Interested to read Way of Kings, but my TBR is SO huge right now I have to wait😅
I think Piranesi is a five star read for me BECAUSE the plot twist was completely unexpected. I’m still not even confident the book I read wasn’t a fantasy read, that’s how floored I was ! That being said, the way it was written took a long time (and two reading attempts) to get into so I understand how it would be disappointing.
Sure! I left this reply to another comment, so hopefully you don’t mind me copying it here. This is a very brief summary of my theory! SPOILERS: I thought it was an examination of someone who has a mental illness (ex: schizophrenia) and that the Piranesi nickname and title was, in a sense, a cruel way of showing how we collectively think of people who are experiencing these things as “stuck in their minds.” The name wasn’t the only thing adding to this theory; a lot of details along the way added to this. So when it wasn’t that, I was left with a feeling of…oh, well this isn’t the moving, impactful thing I thought it was 😅
@@ebnovels wow that is really interesting and I can see how that would be the way it was going.. like the labyrinth/world could be an analogy for the mind. @@ebnovels ohh, I see, I get why you were so disappointed then 😅 I didn't interpret that at all, and i didn't love the book as much as some people but enjoyed quite a bit for the originality
As many have said Piranesi is incredible, wild, emotional and like little else I have read. I can, however understand your feelings on it. I would suggest, if you haven’t already, reading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, which is one of my favourite books ever. It gives a longer form insight into the authors writing style and world building while telling a truly engrossing story, and may help you appreciate Piranesi a little more. Especially if you reread. Susanna Clarke has only written the 3 books but every one is worth it.
You need to make spoilery videos to get your thoughts and frustrations on certain books out 😅 I would totoally watch. I'm planning to read Piranesi this summer. And since I have broken up with Sanderson's books, maybe it will be the oppostive for me. I will love Piranesi because I didn't love Way of Kings?
Subbing bc I agree with the unhoneymooners. I’m so tired of book reviewers acting like every book should be deep and life changing to be good. I was in a tough place in life and the book made me LOL throughout. It was exactly what I needed.
I had a similar thing happen with Piranesi, where I thought one thing was going on and was a little disappointed in the reality... But I still gave it 4⭐️ because I enjoyed it overall! It was unique and strange but didn't over stay it's welcome, and I also love endings I'm not able to predict (as long as it's not TOO bad, lol).
I hated Piranesi but forced myself to finish it bc I kept hoping it would get better and live up to the hype. Would definitely watch your spoiler thoughts on it!
I was given 12 months of BOTM for a birthday, and I LOVE It. I love BOTM, because I ended up reading books that I would not otherwise have sought. I love the variety.

He also recommends Outline, Underground Railroad (I agree), White Noise (mentioned here), and the author Kurt Vonnegut. I hope that helps!

I’m copying a reply I left to another comment! Piranesi is one of my favorite books, but I’m also an occultist and I really enjoyed the nods to occultism and the people who pursue it. The revelation made complete sense in that light, but I realize that most people reading it probably won’t be coming from that background. That said, I’m curious about what you thought it was going to be.

The first book in a series, especially if it’s gotten super popular tends to be lower than normal as more people are likely to pick it up out of hype if it’s not their typical read
Every Summer After really let me down. I enjoyed the first 2/3rds of the book but then it took a sharp turn. I started to really dislike Sam and I honestly thought the main character was a little annoying the whole way through. And the reveal...I don't think I could dislike an ending more
I don’t go by ratings. What people hate I could love and vice versa. I also take book reviews with a grain of salt too because I could miss out on faves by following what others say 🤷🏼♀️ dunno. Just my two cents about it 🙃🙂
For my BOTM, I chose Ink Blood Sister Scribe with No Exit as an add-on ... so excited! I'm a dumdum though and skipped a box last year so now I'll have to wait until NEXT June for my birthday book! (I'm one box away from BFF). Oh well.. it's not like I don't have enough books already I'm just a GimmeGimme 😆
5:18 So, you don’t like a book because it didn’t conform to the conclusion you thought it should have. This sounds like a “you” problem, not the book itself.
@@ebnovels yeah, the usual. “We don’t talk about Ender’s bc Card said things about lmbtq”. So did Rawling but anyway… I’m not a big fan of not talking about Ender’s bc it’s about banning a book. And when we are starting to ban books in the name of lmbtq bc the author was a bad-bad boy he said things… especially when it is a fundamental work (among others) about exactly the discrimination... These channels are about books and authors skills not about politics.
Everyone freaking out about Piranesi (loved it) and I'm over here never liking any Brando Sando I've ever read (all of Mistborn and Way of Kings). The true minority here lol
I just could not get into Piranesi. Something about the random contradictions of a building the size of a country or however infinite it was makes no sense to me.
I've only read Piranesi in that list and it was also a miss for me, so don't worry, you're not alone! 🥴 The reason why it didn't work for me was 1) I didn't connect much with the main character, 2) I was expecting a more immersive and enchanting writing style (based on reviews), and 3) its overall message. *SPOILER AHEAD* I did like the idea of the House mirroring our own world with its mysterious elements, but I don't believe that the World and its elements can't point us to the Truth, resulting in us needing stories to make sense of our existence and/or to cope with our ignorance. It is true that stories can help us with those things, but they're not the ultimate goal in and of themselves (maybe I misunderstood the author, but I sensed a nihilistic or agnostic tone to her work, ideologies that often look at the world through an absurdist lense). I believe on the contrary that we can discover what's essential if we seek it with honesty and a burning desire. I've had similar experiences with other books where my problem had nothing to do with the writing style, the character work, etc. but mainly what the author was trying to convey (for example, Skullsworn by Brian Staveley).
I came here to validate my dislike of Every Summer After!! She really wasn't good enough for him LOL. Her character had no growth between when they broke up as teens to a fully grown adult! She had all the same problems. Where as the male character at least said that he wasn't the same and went on to explain what how he felt he'd changed.
Hahahaha, ok, I’ll copy what my theory was from another reply (there was more to the theory than just this, but it’s a brief summary): SPOILERS: I thought it was an examination of someone who has a mental illness (ex: schizophrenia) and that the Piranesi nickname and title was, in a sense, a cruel way of showing how we collectively think of people who are experiencing these things as “stuck in their minds.” The name wasn’t the only thing adding to this theory; a lot of details along the way added to this. It’s funny to see so many positive comments about Piranesi as I also disliked it. I don’t understand what we were supposed to have learned by reading it and found it greatly unsatisfying. I thought it was going to me whimsical and magical but it was repetitive and boring.
I never really understood the hype for Piranesi. I gave it three stars. I liked it, but I kind of figured out the mystery so I wasn't blown away by the reveals and it's an odd story. I did appreciate it for being innovative and the writing quality itself was good, but I wasn't blown away by the plot.

It’s so bizarre that I definitely would still recommend it!
The first book in a series, especially if it’s gotten super popular tends to be lower than normal as more people are likely to pick it up out of hype if it’s not their typical read
That’s very true
The Wishing Game sounds fun! And I always think if I should read Piranesi or not (the no always wins) 😅
Every Summer After really let me down. I enjoyed the first 2/3rds of the book but then it took a sharp turn. I started to really dislike Sam and I honestly thought the main character was a little annoying the whole way through. And the reveal...I don't think I could dislike an ending more
Haha, the reveal was, uh, well, it was a reveal 😂
I seriously didn't know Book of the Month was still going.
I don’t go by ratings. What people hate I could love and vice versa. I also take book reviews with a grain of salt too because I could miss out on faves by following what others say 🤷🏼♀️ dunno. Just my two cents about it 🙃🙂
I think that’s a great approach! 😄
Piranesi, then. Thank you.
I still need to read the unhoneymooners 😤
For my BOTM, I chose Ink Blood Sister Scribe with No Exit as an add-on ... so excited! I'm a dumdum though and skipped a box last year so now I'll have to wait until NEXT June for my birthday book! (I'm one box away from BFF). Oh well.. it's not like I don't have enough books already I'm just a GimmeGimme 😆
I’m really curious about that one! And that’s stinks about your birthday book 🙈
5:18 So, you don’t like a book because it didn’t conform to the conclusion you thought it should have. This sounds like a “you” problem, not the book itself.
Card’s Ender’s Game series has 1.3million. Worth it, especially 1-2 book together. Speaker of the Dead is just it…
That’s definitely a lot of ratings!
I felt the same way with Piranesi.
I hated the end of Unhoneymooners. Hard for me to talk about without major spoilers but I truly hates the ending. 😬
Haha, there are some elements to it that are definitely a little, uh, not perfect 😂
Everyone freaking out about Piranesi (loved it) and I'm over here never liking any Brando Sando I've ever read (all of Mistborn and Way of Kings). The true minority here lol
I had to DNF Piranesi. I was really bummed. I wanted to like it so much
I just could not get into Piranesi. Something about the random contradictions of a building the size of a country or however infinite it was makes no sense to me.
Please do spoiler videos 😂 I really enjoyed Piranesi, 5 stars and I recommended it to you because I thought you would like it as well 😂😂
Haha, it was a very interesting reading experience, so I’m certainly not mad I read it 😄
I've only read Piranesi in that list and it was also a miss for me, so don't worry, you're not alone! 🥴 The reason why it didn't work for me was 1) I didn't connect much with the main character, 2) I was expecting a more immersive and enchanting writing style (based on reviews), and 3) its overall message. *SPOILER AHEAD*
I did like the idea of the House mirroring our own world with its mysterious elements, but I don't believe that the World and its elements can't point us to the Truth, resulting in us needing stories to make sense of our existence and/or to cope with our ignorance.
BOTM sounds amazing sadly it's only for US not Europe...
I hope they eventually expand! They did expand to Canada, so fingers crossed with more growth they become accessible elsewhere as well
I came here to validate my dislike of Every Summer After!! She really wasn't good enough for him LOL. Her character had no growth between when they broke up as teens to a fully grown adult! She had all the same problems. Where as the male character at least said that he wasn't the same and went on to explain what how he felt he'd changed.
Haha, and adding to that, I kept thinking…it’s been TWELVE YEARS??? 😂
elle you can't keep mentioning that you had a better piranesi story in your head and not telling us what it is!
Hahahaha, ok, I’ll copy what my theory was from another reply (there was more to the theory than just this, but it’s a brief summary):
SPOILERS:
I thought it was an examination of someone who has a mental illness (ex: schizophrenia) and that the Piranesi nickname and title was, in a sense, a cruel way of showing how we collectively think of people who are experiencing these things as “stuck in their minds.” The name wasn’t the only thing adding to this theory; a lot of details along the way added to this. So when it wasn’t that, I was left with a feeling of…oh, well this isn’t the moving, impactful thing I thought it was 😅
@@ebnovels i think i like this version better too. in any case better than what it turns out to be in the book🤷♀️ thanks for replying, now i can live in peace😅
I NEED to know the prediction you had for Piranesi!.. so curious. I've read the book, and felt quite neutral about it 🤷🏻♀️
I won’t read Pirahnesi on principle. It sounds terrible to me. Way of Kings is absolutely worth the hype. I adore Kaladin.
I adore Kaladin as well (obviously 😂)
I rarely ever think that someone’s opinion about books is “wrong” but this hot take on Piranesi being the lowest of the pile.. oof.
Hahahahaha, I know, I could feel the oof as I was saying it 😅😅😅
I really disliked Piranesi. It just made me feel icky and gross for some weirdly irrational reason. Not my cup of tea at all.
It’s funny to see so many positive comments about Piranesi as I also disliked it. I don’t understand what we were supposed to have learned by reading it and found it greatly unsatisfying. I thought it was going to me whimsical and magical but it was repetitive and boring.
Elliot can you do videos with fantasy books written about gay authors in characters for pride month xoxo 😚 🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈💕🌈🌈🌈💕🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈
I did a list awhile back about books with queer main characters! This month I’m planning to read more books that are by or feature queer characters :)
@@ebnovels That is a wonderful idea e need keep talking and having books with gay authors for now and thanks bestie 😀
I never really understood the hype for Piranesi. I gave it three stars. I liked it, but I kind of figured out the mystery so I wasn't blown away by the reveals and it's an odd story. I did appreciate it for being innovative and the writing quality itself was good, but I wasn't blown away by the plot.
I definitely agree with a lot of your thoughts on it :)
Piranesi was massively over hyped imo just an average book nothing more nothing less.
Piranesi is just a bad retelling of Super Mario Bros 2.
Hahaha, I need to look into this
OMG i jus bought 4 brandon Sanderson books yesterday hehe. & way of kings was one of them! im currently reading tress of rhe emerald sea but fighting for my life bcz i am so tempted to also start warbreaker. oh this is also my first time trying & i am absolutely obsessed with his writing & characterization 😭🩷
Warbreaker is so much fun! A different kind of fun than Tress, but fun nonetheless (sorry for the rhyming 😂)
@@ebnovels AHAHAHA help ur so cute 😭😭 im so excited yayyy

Hey Elliot!! You should totally read the Kagen the Damned series. I was so not expecting to like it as much as I did. The second book is getting intense, just sayin’… 🫣
I actually just bought that one! Idk if I can get to it any time soon, but I’ll try to bump it up on my list :D
@@ebnovels Oh good! There is a portion of the first book that is a slow (honestly somewhat irritating) part, but stick with it. It gets really good.
Thanks for the reply:) I wish you well.
