Thanks for the video. I dropped the pan to change the filter, and discovered a bad modulator that was leaking. Swapped it out and adjusted the band as you showed. The ol’ ‘88 F250 shifts like a new one now. 👍
I really liked you covering the vacuum lines, rubber and hard lines. This is overlooked too much when trouble shooting the Modulator/shifting issues. Good Stuff! Thanks for sharing. Cheers from Motown. Oh guys, don't forget about the pin in the Modulator that must go in. You can get pin replacments from Transtar.
hi, thanks for that...also in another one of my vids ( sorry cant remember which one ) i run through the modulator pin length modification if you have a low vac motor and how to adjust modulator screw. cheers
yeah they were the golden days, funny though the modern transmissions don`t last any longer....they save a bit of fuel, however much more expensive to create, maintain and then to repair, which would outweigh the fuel savings and the later ones would have much greater carbon footprint...we call this technology and progress

cant thank you enough ,had a c6 that the band wedge adjuster had fell out and had no reverse or park , after watching your vid I'm back in good shape in 25 min
Thank you for the C6 content. My new project 1972 Convertible with the 429 with a C6. Age and Deferred maintenance by prior owner has me busy. What’s the difference between a green stripe modulator and a black stripe modulator? I have a street cruiser but want it to have firm shifts. Is that bushing tool available at parts store or online?
hi, the shift points from standard adjustment are slightly different. modulator (screw in) found in 1966-72 ; modulator (push in) purple stripe 1973-on, ; modulator (push in) green stripe 1977-on ; modulator black stripe commercial 1973-80. you can use any adjustable if you can`t find the correct one. the bushing tool we make ourselves if you are in australia we can post to you. cheers
@@YepThatsIt Thank you for the info. I have 1972 429 with the C6, not sure what is installed, I had heard an upgrade would be the black strip modulator if replacing it. I was asking you to verify. I am located in Austin, TX so not local.
After early 77, it's Type-CJ. That was replaced with Mercon, and later Mercon V. Earlier transmissions take Type F. If it takes CJ/Mercon/Mercon V, it will carry a fluid code ending in CJ on the dipstick. If it takes Type F, the fluid code will end with F. Note that CJ is compatible with Dexron II(D) (Type D) so the fluid used is correct.
I've got the same transmission in a 1989 E350 Motorhome. I lost 3rd gear after we moved and the van sat for 7 months. The fluid is good, the kickdown cable is good. No visible leaking from the vaccum modulator and good vaccum. I'm wondering if the tranny is just shot or is there anything else I am overlooking.
hi, make sure you have good vacuum at the modulator. sometime people run a non suitable vac hose all the way from the inlet manifold to the modulator and is either kinks or collapses when warms up and inhibits vac. make sure the brake booster isnt on the same t-piece or will leach off vacuum as well. cheers
Dealing with same problem I measured vacuum with gauge showing at 18 checked hoses they seem okey not sure how to verify if indeed vacuum is insufficient I get very crisp reverse and 1/2 shifts perfectly just doesn’t go to last gear definitely mind boggling
@@YepThatsIt I've discovered that when I removed the old modulator that the pin was missing, now I'm in the process of making one. Thanks for your reply.
Rather than searching through your videos do you have any information on the C6 with the 6.9 l international engine? I'm trying to make some adjustments on my second to third shift, first to second I can make later but second to third is much more difficult to make an adjustment on.
hi, can be many things internally. check basics first and band adjustment also try an adjustable modulator and screw in to see if firms up shifts. on these older trans you can add moreys honey to thicken up fluid a bit to help couteract internal pressure leaks. cheers

Great video, I learned alot!!! Thank you,

Useful video, thx.
hi, nice to hear if helped. hopefully i get a few beers out of it ;-) cheers
What on the c6 would make first gear almost equal to 2nd. When I'm towing with mine it has no low end torque in first. Thinking maybe band setting?

What about the big o ring that hardens and transmission doesn't go into gear period?
hi, all the seals and o`rings harden and wear out over usage. cheers
I have an 87 f150 that won't go into overdrive the top speed is 35 to 40 mph, could poor vacuum or a bad modular be the cause? Good video btw.
