Fishing my whole life. Working over, on water. My reflex is to tighten my grip when something try’s to pull out of my hands. I operate a dredge for a municipality. Tools and $1000.00 hand held radio, I grip rather than releasing while working.
While putting on Down Rigger weight out of Halfmoon Bay, on a rough day I hit the retrieve button on the down rigger. Ripped the clip through my hand. Because of that reflex to tighten my grip over water. Completely ripped my pinky open. Stitches later, looks ok. But no feeling on the outside of the finger!
Stacy, that was your lucky day. Be grateful, you were in the shallows, no current.

Stacey I have broken rods on boat docks, had them fall into the delta, and all kinds of crazy other stuff. It happens to all of us! Keep fishing and always bring a back-up setup!

Hi Stacy. When you lost your expensive gear. Your captain looked like he was continuing to fish and not going to help you out. 😅 If it ever happens again. Quickly use the anchor mode while watching closely the location of the falling rod. Look at surrounding land marks, rocks vegetation as a reference. Tie on a big treble hook with a half ounce or heavier sinker. And cast just beyond where your rod went down. Try different angles till you snag it. I've recovered 2 rods that way, and in deeper water. Thanks for your videos.

What reel is that and how do you like it? I’ve been eyeballing a Daiwa Tatula 300 or a Lexa HD for throwing 2+ oz swim baits. So glad you got your rig back. That’s a great drinking story!

He did follow that rod rite into the Delta. A big fat splash while bass fishing is always good.
That's why I hook my finger around the trigger on the rod. I'm older, and casting rods were one handed handles. I think they are called pistol grips. Hook that finger ! Glad he hooked the line.
I typically do. But as you saw…I was totally off my game that day! What a mess. 😂
