When my mom passed away it was February in Ohio. I remembered mom telling me about a peony from my grandmother planted behind her shed. I had no choice, I dug ot out of ice and snow. I have it still today blooming every year
Greeting's from Ireland Twenty year's ago my wife's grandmother passed away and she left the cottage to my wife's brother. He wanted to use the tractor to bulldoze the backyard peony rose's included. But my wife's mother dug up the tuber's and gave one to my wife and her sister and kept one for herself. It was the first flower in our front garden which we bought around the same time. We planted it in autumn and it flowered the following summer. This peony is over seventy years old and bloom's every summer without fail.
Love that you have the peony from your grandmother's garden. Such a special remembrance. And I like the idea of interplanting dahlias and basil. As always, your garden is a delight!
I love the peonies from grandma’s garden . I have purple shamrocks from my father that I cherish even more since his passing. “Graceful” or “Full of Grace” would be pretty names for “Saving Grace’s” seeds. ❤
I still have peonies from my mother in law in my garden-40 years later! She couldn't get them to bloom, but they bloom every year for me. I had to move them a couple of times before they finally thrived. Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden and all of your knowledge!
I have been watching from afar for a few years now and am excited to say I have learned so much from you. I've really begun to have the confidence to make the garden of my dreams thanks to your videos. Thank you so much. 😊
Hi Danielle, you know, it's really nice to hear you paid twenty-five cents for a package of basil seeds! we would all love beautiful, lush gardens but it gets pricey to buy new plants and packages of seed every year. I love the fact that you buy what your budget allows and collect seed instead of having an instant garden, you have worked hard to achieve what you have done in your garden, I admire the way you have designed and planted your garden little by little and have experimented with what works best for you, You should be proud of yourself!!! I love the fact that you have your grandmothers peony now growing in your garden, this is what makes our gardens so special to us. I grow hydrangea because my grandmother did too! We are reminded of our loved ones in such a wonderful way. Thank you for taking your time to explain the steps of interplanting throughout the growing season, it is so helpful. You and Gracie make a great team! 😍
I just love your videos. The journey of Saving Grace just makes my heart so happy. And the connection to your family through gardening is so lovely and something I feel every day. ❤❤
After my parents died, and before the house where I grew up was sold, I took peony and rhubarb plants from their gardens, and brought them home. And yes, it was like bringing the memory of my parents and my childhood home with me. (I’m almost 75.) My mother made strawberry rhubarb pie, and there were vases of peonies in the house. Here’s a question for you: What do you keep in your gardening tool belt? I noticed a large pocket… I carry my pruners in mine… Thank you for this video. An emotional one for me. I loved it. ❤
Sending hugs Margaret. My grandma used to make rhubarb pie too. I’m thankful you were able to get rhubarb and a peonies. I wish I would have thought to get some rhubarb. I mainly just use the belt for pruners.
It is so special to have a piece of someone’s garden especially a passed loved one. Such a treasure. I have bearded iris that I had received 20+ years ago from our elderly neighbor, she is in heaven but her iris will keep bloom on forever! I absolutely love and appreciate your content. ❤
David Howard dahlia was the bloom that made me love orange in the garden too. It would just draw my eye and fill me with joy every time I saw it. Like you, prior to this, I was not a fan of orange. Now I am adding it more and more. I just put in what I call an Artists Garden and the color scheme is Purple and Orange. I also fill my garden with what I call Memory Plants and it just brings back fond memories of family members as I take my morning garden walks. You could put a plant with a comparable color of Saving Grace on the shadier side that does like it there so it can balance it out. Because if Saving Grace doesn't thrive over there it won't look right anyway. But you never know, it might work and SG won't mind the side with less sun.
Keep your saving grace dahlias in containers in sun until they are ready to bloom, then tuck the containers into your shadier border. They will appreciate the cool mornings ❤
❤ love your videos & gardens . I always learn something😊 I just ordered my half moon peony cages I’ve never seen them before so thank you! I just purchased my second Dahlia I agree with you I just want to attract as many butterflies and bees that is why my style is definitely cottage gardens.
You are so giving and I’ve learned a lot watching your videos. I’m a zone and a half north of yours, but watching what’s happening in your garden helps me keep pace with what I should do in mine. For the seeds maybe the name of the”Saving Grace Legacy”? You’re creating a legacy after all. Thank you again for all your teaching transparency ❤
Great video, and it's so nice to hear you saved your grandmother's peony. And how lovely that you didn't give up on it and moved her somewhere else...which she clearly loves! I moved two of mine last year after getting no blooms. Hopefully, I will get that result this year.
I have a friend who has moved her peony collection 3 times due to moving, each has a special meaning; your grandmother's peony will last generations! I am dedicating a quarter of my Community Garden Plot ( which is only 10x10) to dahlias, it never even occurred to me to interplant short term crops between the tubers...total game changer!! You have given me SO many ideas how to utilize small spaces. For the record, I am having a wonderful day and hope you are as well. Cheers!
I like the singles and Collarettes too! Lots more pollinators. My Pooh dahlias had the most Monarchs I’ve seen in one place at one time last Fall. It was really awesome!
I just love how sentimental you are❤️ Maybe that’s not a big enough word for it, but I hope my grandkids have such sweet memories of me as you do of her🥰
Saving Grace Again; More Saving Grace; Little Gracie; Beyond Saving Grace; Baby Grace. No matter what you name her offspring (Saving Grace Offspring!), I’m sure they will all be beautiful. Your videos never fail to move me emotionally, especially when you speak of your grandmother. I didn’t know either of mine well but I love having plants that have been passed down from my maternal grandmother and even her mother, my great grandmother: lemon lilies, almond bush and bridal veil Spirea.
I'm N of you by 50 miles, and I did not dig my Dahlia tubers last year, and they overwintered and are over a foot high! All this rain we're getting is making them go crazy! I'm not complaining. We have an old lilac we dug from his parent's yard... so special to be able to have these generational plants.
I love that you were able to have a piece of grandma’s garden. I’ve had Peonies for 3 years and no blooms. Your knowledge and interest on inter planting is of high interest for me. My hope is to help with pest pressure. Thanks again for sharing!
Having your grandmother’s peony from her garden is super special! I am also trying Dahlia Cactus Alauna Clair-obscure in my dahlia patch this year plus 3 others with same color palette. Your garden is so beautiful! Can’t wait to see it bloom throughout the season. - Julie
Love the story about your grandmother's peony! I took a few iris from my mothers little place last year when she passed away. I look forward to seeing which colors I dug up! We just got a bit of snow here in CO so am still waiting for Spring!
Love your videos, Danielle. That is my daughter's name too. 😊 I love red/burgundy Amaranth interplanted with Dahlias. I love the burgundy against the green of the dahlia foliage.l also love my single bedding dahlias. They are so giving & generally don't need staking, plus they self seed all over the place giving lots of different varieties & colours. Yes, the bees absolutely adore them. The main problem with them, though is keeping up with the deadheading.
Thanks for sharing all your thoughts that you are thinking about. It has really helped me think through ideas for my own garden. I am planting flowers, perennials, along with some veggies this year. I don't have any raised beds but really enjoying the creativity of knowing things will look beautiful growing all together. Its been so fun for me and I feel so encouraged watching your channel. Thanks for your time and talent!!!
Learning a lot watching you grow and tend the plants, very comprehensive! Thanks for all your efforts, it's so helpful to others success. Saving Grace for All (the "for All" works when others share what you have passed on with your seed saving and sharing!
Thanks Danielle, looks great. I always felt interplanting gave a more natural appearance, like in nature when more than one plant grows together. I'm so glad you were able to get that peony from your Grandmother's garden. One of my Grandma's loved flowers and we would enjoy them together too. I had a question about Feverfew. I have some seedlings started but saw in the Cool Flowers book that Lisa Ziegler said on the information page for feverfew that they repel all insects including beneficials and not to plant them by anything you want pollinated. I need to know where to put mine so would appreciate you comments on this. Will have various flowers and vegetable beds.
Your gardens are looking amazing! I can’t wait to see what your border looks like with all your Saving Grace’s (I was hoping you would pop up a picture of her…)
I agree! Love the simple dahlias as I love to see the pollinators! I also find they seem to work better for me as we have an abundance of earwigs and the simple dahlias have less nooks and crannies to sleep in ;)
Daniel my sister was just over and a white heritage peonie is blooming from our family home . She’s just moved back home and of course I will divide moms peonie with her! I understand how special plants can be ! I’ve moved this one four times with me! I learn so much from you the interpkanting so very useful I’m studying up on this! You seem so energized. Prayers all is well with you .
Have you been reading my mind ? I have been searching for a peony support and so glad you have something. I think I’ll also use these for my hydrangeas those Annabelle’s need support. Thanks so much for creating this content. 😊
Hi Danielle, Permaculture principles are much better to work by as you said, fewer pests and problems. I did a course many years ago and still try to work with those ideas today. I love your calm, easy on the eyes colour combination of lemon, lilac and white. And the repeat planting is working so well. Your raised garden beds look easier to work around now you've allowed more space, in between. Jo😊 Im loving collarette dahlias more and more....i have a small, simple dahlia called "fancy pants".....and some anenome dahlias too. The dinnerplates are over-rated and look scruffy to me.
Quick thought on your shady side of your garden bed. You could tighten up that evergreen tree a bit and do like they do in Europe, take out a few select branches to let more light and airflow in. It would still be tall and keep the structure but just a few would make a big difference for that Saving Grace to get going. Worth a shot.
I love having plants in my garden that come from other people’s gardens! It’s so special. ❤️ Love, love that you have that peony from your grandmas garden💕💕I am sure you see her in it every time it blooms. I am 70 and I also love orange and purple. Your garden is magical and just beautiful. Love, love, love your videos and demonstrations, I've learned so much and thinking about gardening in a new and creative ways. So much fun!
I love how you are interplanting! I try to do that as well and I got some good ideas from you. I like that Dalia and basil together. I’m going to try that. I think it would look fine if you just have saving Greece on one side of the border.

Wow!!!! That’s a great idea!

So special you have your grandma’s memory in your garden. I have 4 saving Grace plants growing so well and I think of you , my garden inspiration! 💐
4:10 my vegetable garden became an iris bed/flower patch. I simply grow what brings me joy. No regrets.

Dividing peony? Never heard of that. You should do a video on that next time you divide your peony.😊

It was incredibly enjoyable spending time with you in your garden. Thank you so much.❤

Loved the video! You backyard is gorgeous right now and always!
Love the video!!
I use tomato cages for mature peony support. I buy the green coated ones from Home Depot. They are perfect and cheap!
Great idea!!!

Saving Grace Extended ( for extended family)
Your flowers are beautiful! Did you dig up the tulip bulbs that were in the raised beds before planting new plants?
That's what I was wondering.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden with us! It brings joy to my mornings!
Your garden is magical and just beautiful. Love, love, love your videos and demonstrations, I've learned so much and thinking about gardening in a new and creative ways. So much fun!

Your passion motivates me and has taught me a lot. Hoping for Saving Grace Family seeds!!!
I love how you are interplanting! I try to do that as well and I got some good ideas from you. I like that Dalia and basil together. I’m going to try that. I think it would look fine if you just have saving Greece on one side of the border.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden with us. We enjoy spending time with you also.
Just found your channel and loving it. Your garden is beautiful, cant wait to see more
So much useful information, Danielle! Your garden is beautiful!
아름다운 정원, 원더풀!
감사히 함께 합니다.~^^😄조아요👇❤
This was such a good topic. I’ve been thinking about sowing procuts in my dahlia bed. I have a very small space, and the downside of dahlias is that they take so long to fill out. I’m going to try!!!
Yes! I’ve heard Jenny Love say she does procut transplants in her permanent dahlia beds.
I love orange and purple, too!
Love your garden. Please show how you will stake the dahlia you planted amongst your other flowers.
What joy flowers bring. Thank you for always sharing your knowledge. I’ve learned a great deal from you. I’m also doing as much interplanting this year in my garden from the knowledge I’ve come to acquire from you. 💕 You did recommend an interplanting book at one time but I can’t remember the title.
Love your garden and your pup.
Saving grace's sisters
The beauty of your layering takes my breath away. Could you please share your thought process when layering plants?
What happened to the tulips in the raised beds? Did I miss a video about them?
Most beautiful designed garden for a medium size space, I really enjoyed watching all your videos!
Thanks for all the interplanting experiments and ideas for experiments. This year I am attempting to interplant dahlias in my ranunculus beds. Then thinking being that the dahlias won’t start getting big until after the ranunculus have petered out. I’ve presprouted my dahlias a bit so they have some roots and sprouts so they are less likely to rot when the ranunculus get watered. I may not be able to save the corms if they rot from the dahlias being watered, but who knows.
Saving Grace Sisters! ❤
Love it!!!
I am trying to do more interplanting this year so this was perfect timing!
Thank you so much Danielle - this is so helpful and makes me excited!!!
What a great video. I am really interested in interplanting as I have limited planting space. Thank you for sharing your experience on this 😊
Seeds = saving grace puppies 🐕
Genius!
