Thanks for your recommendations. I am a big fan of Anki; it's helped me learn 4,000 words in just over 2 years. I find that creating my own cards is an essential part of learning vocabulary because I choose pictures and sentences that have meaning for me. I also create cards for mistakes that I make often, using the correct form, never the incorrect form because I don't want to accidentally reinforce the mistake. I agree with you completely that using Anki too much becomes boring very quickly, so I limit myself to 15 - 20 minutes per day, preferably 15 minutes.

Anki can be a pain the ass, but I love it. I don't use it a lot because I don't REALLY like using flashcards much any more. But if you're going to use them I think it's best. However, I think digital flashcards without audio and example sentences are pointless. I can see the argument for no audio, but example sentences are a MUST. Language needs context, which is why I'm not a huge fan of flashcards any more. I begin to KNOW a lot of words, but I can't USE a lot of words.
Yeah I agree that it's better to have sentences! Although in some cases having only words makes sense if you've encountered the words before or if like me, you just going through the vocab lists of your textbook (vocab which you've practice in context beforehand). I often learnt words out of context and it hasn't particularly hurt my learning, on the contrary
I mean, I don't think it can hurt, for sure. But it definitely has more of a chance for people to learn words so they only can recognize them (and then possibly only in writing if they have no audio) and they can't really produce them. This is mostly anecdotal and through my own experience though. The problem is many, many people only study flashcards one way. Anki makes it pretty easy to flip them, but a lot of people I've seen don't. In fact, while in school to become a teacher we were warned that many people don't as well. I just think while flashcards are a great supplement many people rely on them too heavily and aren't taught to use them properly. But, again. Anki is great. I love it. It's what I use when I'm feeling like flashing myself. I'm not saying DON'T use flashcards. Just that I wish more people know how to "optimize" them.

You have hit a plateau in your progress. This happens in any new learned skill: music, sports, academics. I've found the best thing is to back off the topic, and totally ignore it for a couple of months. It will seem easier, and your progress will be quicker after you come back to it.
