    The one thing I miss is that Spongebob has more personality than being annoying. Remember when Squidward got fired and SpongeBob got so annoyed with Squidward because he was mooching off of him and he even strangled Mr.Krabs because it was over a stupid old dime. That's one of my favorite episodes to quote because I remember it so well lol.

    My problem is the overexaggeration. The jokes aren't bad themselves for the most part, but the overuse of ridiculous faces taints them. Old spongebob used its "silly" faces sparingly and not every joke had one.

    • @Namingway248
      @Namingway248 2 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      To play devil's advocate, go back and watch episode 6 (the first mermaid man and barnacle boy episode) and you tell me early spongebob didn't have the ability to be a one emotion, unwarranted chaos causing machine. Legit all he does that episode is torture and bother ptsd-riddled elderly men until he got what he wanted. What I'm about to say is wild level conspiracy, but I think Paul Tibitt (who wrote the aforementioned episode and became the post-movie show runner for years) always sort of saw spongebob that way and probably had a big hand in slowly, perhaps unintentionally, shaping the cast into the way they are now. Other early spongebob writers are generally the ones to have given spongebob the more human aspects you (and I) remember.

    • @Dezlite
      @Dezlite 2 ปีที่แล้ว +97

      I remember, Spongebob at least felt natural with his personality. In some cases he would stand up for himself. Even to Mr Krabs and Squidward ("Can you spare a dime" is one example). Now he has one emotion, and it almost makes him seem like a child because he's happy 24/7

      @@Namingway248 I mean the thing is Spongebob has always been "annoying" to characters. Difference is that Spongebob at least felt like a good-hearted character that didn't know when to quit.
      He should be "annoying" to the characters in his never-give-up mentality and persistence taking things out of control in a entertaining way to watch.
      He shouldn't be "annyoing" to the audience, purposely unlikable and just being random and quirky. It almost feels like the shows newer episodes want us to purposely root against spongebob for the audiances sake.

    • @miragenights801
      @miragenights801 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@Namingway248 I put the fault on Vincent Waller just as much, if not more than Paul Tibbit. Tibbit wrote a majority of the seasons 1-3 episodes. Meanwhile, Vincent was a high power on Ren and Stimpy and much of that show's grotesque and obnoxious slapstick transitioned to Spongebob, starting as early as season 2, blooming around the 3rd-4th season, and exploding into the one-note chaos bringer he is now. Given Waller became in charge recently, I feel he bears more responsibility for Spongebob's deterioration than Paul ever did. And then you have Kamp Koral's backstory completely shattering the show's baseline continuity... I just lost faith in the show. Sea Man Sponge Haters Club was the final nail in the coffin. Kamp Koral killed my faith in the show, that repulsive episode killed my faith in the character.

    • @Namingway248
      @Namingway248 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@miragenights801 That's a very well thought out conclusion! I had not looked into him as deeply, so I wasn't aware of his connection to ren and stimpy. Kamp Koral tried to tell continuity lovers to shut up by adding a throwaway interaction where sandy is actually trying to make changes in the past to stabilize the future timeline or something stupid like that, but as I just implied its still stupid and kind of lame. I also am one of the people who finds the extended universe concepts disrespectful to hillenburg's original desires, but I understand that to be a contentious point.

  • @lordhighkage7105

    The problem that newer SpongeBob falls into is that SpongeBob was never inherently annoying. He was only cheerful, optimistic, and a bit on the naive side, which naturally bothered a good portion of the cast because they themselves are either cynical, self-centered, or both(Squidward, Mrs. Puff, Plankton, arguably Krabs). The dynamic is what made it funny, SpongeBob was just living life while everyone else is reacting to it as if it's complete insanity. He wasn't annoying, they were just often annoyed by him.

    One of the biggest issues with modern SpongeBob is that it turned its once colorful cast of characters into one-dimensional characters, having been reduced to sole, stereotypical personalities that exist only to satisfy the needs of the episode’s plot, in turn limiting the possibilities of storytelling. That's why many recent episodes have been accidentally showing similar traits from previous episodes, or have purposely relied on singular, one-joke characters out of desperation for originality. It’s not that there’s a lack of imagination or even effort at times, but when you have a show running for this long, future writing teams may not hold the same values, beliefs, or ideas that the creator once had in mind. Comedy is subjective and all but you don't have to love SpongeBob just because it's SpongeBob.

      The very term you described is what is known as Flanderization. Named after The Simpsons character Ned Flanders, Flanderization is when new writers come to work on the show and make it easier to write about them by making a character’s specific traits their entire personality. And Flanderization has happened throughout lots of long-running media, like The Simpsons, Family Guy, SpongeBob SquarePants, and even Sonic The Hedgehog.

    "Mid-Life Crustacean" is my favorite episode of the show, and it's not even totally based on the episode itself. I mean, it IS, it's a good episode and stuff but one specific joke. Where Mr. Krabs says "You boys just hanging out" and it cuts to Patrick's gut hanging out over his waistband with a casual "yes~".
    I remember that KILLED my brother and I, not just at the time but for like MONTHS afterwards. We'd get red in the face just thinking about it and the "ARE YOU READY TO GO CRAZY" "I"M ALREADY HEARING VOICES" bit. It was just a way that we could make each other totally lose it laughing at the drop of a hat. And that was nice.

      That episode was also one of those rare times (if not the only time) where Krabs was genuinely not into money and showed no sign of greed or cheapness. He wanted to "feel young again" instead of his usual "make money," which is not only really interesting, also relatable. Something most (if not all) modern SpongeBob episodes fail at is being relatable to the audience. The episode is relatable because of humans aging and "losing their luster" as they get older. What they once had, they lost to maturing. It was an amazing episode.

The episode when they thought they stole the ballon, they were sitting around a campfire and even Patrick made the point how was that possible if they were under water.
    They also had a moral compass or a conscious. Like Mr. Krabs has always been greedy, but even he had his boundaries. A good example of that was when he originally sold the Krusty Krab. When he went back to work, and saw the place was being run, he chose to buy back the restaurant at the expense of being broke because he thought what the new owners were doing was morally wrong with the processed foods and hostile work environment. A good show is when characters have those boundaries that make it realistic and funny imo.

    Easy fixes to make the stories better and more in character
    Mrs. Puff: A generic episode of Spongebob actually trying earnestly to get his license but his inability to drive causes them to crash.
    Plankton: Spongebobs obliviousness causes him to screw up one of Plankton's plans to steal the formula by mopping when Planktons invention moves across the Krusty Krab or a dropped patty causes it to veer off course and crash in to a wall.
    Bubble Bass: A soft sequel to Pickles where every time Spongebob brings him food, Bubble Bass purposely messes with the order for kicks to get free food but Spongebob catches him in the act and feeds him a nasty patty or just reveals that he'd taped himself making the food.
    All of these could be told from the perspective of the people telling the stories and dramatized to make it seem like they're all innocent victims of Spongebob being annoying or going out his way to ruin their days and you could have Spongebob listening in on this from outside Squidwards window and recalling the actual events for the sake of having him interrupt the meeting but with his inner monologue so it doesn't break the immersion of the episode and continue the blatant Flanderization of the characters.

    • @TimerdonDWI
      @TimerdonDWI 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, those ideas would keep consistency with the innocence of Spongebob & his interactions with these characters. Man, I'm not even gonna lie. This episode had so much potential to be so memorable. The concept of characters who hate SpongeBob coming together to vent about their frustrations/problems with him, is seriously a great plot idea. I'm just sad that the story sucked, and that it was extremely predictable.
    Another issue that I definitely dislike the most about this episode: Why was SpongeBob a part of the episode at ALL? I mean, like, not in the flashbacks, those make sense. It would make sense for SpongeBob to obviously be in the flashbacks/stories they all tell. But SpongeBob could've easily been left out of the episode outside of the stories. They could've gone to Mrs. Puff's house, they could've gone to the Chum Bucket. Hell, they could meet up in a cabin somewhere deep in the freaking woods. But of course the writers chose Squidward's house because HAHAH LET'S DESTROY SQUIDWARD'S HOUSE FOR THE UP-TEENTH TIME.
    Seriously, what the hell is that?! Anyways, yeah, episode could've been a LOT better, but these problems definitely are what ruin it.

      What's more annoying is yet again what did Squidward even do to deserve getting his house destroyed? Like the older episodes a lot of times something bad happened to Squidward it was Karma, like I think one of the first episodes he gets his house destroyed he basically purposefully causes SpongeBob and Patrick too hate each other and majorly regrets this and has to get them to be friends again. Granted I feel like him getting his house destroyed even tho he did the right thing in the end is a little harsh, but like I said he did at least do something pretty mean to deserve what happened to him, so it was still pretty amusing and fun to watch, also in the end he was just getting them to be friends again for himself so they'd leave him alone and not doing it for them so I guess that's sorta bad too. But anyways point is before when Squidward got punished in some sort of way, he usually kinda deserved it which often made it amusing or at least not annoying in the older episodes

    My favorite episode of SpongeBob is either Band Geeks, Pizza Delivery, or Jellyfish Jam. All of them are charming and lovely. In band geeks, SpongeBob’s social awkwardness is offset by the consequences he faces for it by people calling him out. Jellyfish jam is just really fun in how optimistic and charming SpongeBob is. Pizza delivery shows both squidward and SpongeBob at their best. Both of them are layered and dynamic characters. SpongeBob has an iron will, but he’s also sensitive. Squidward is easily annoyed and grouchy, but ultimately is something of a mentor and father figure to SpongeBob, and he’s willing to defend him when he’s treated poorly by a customer. When SpongeBob is neurotic and a control freak, it doesn’t work out for him. It shouldn’t. That’s why Party Pooper Pants is funny. It’s a good episode. SpongeBob is patient but he’s not a pushover, his ability to be layered and be extremely angry and over the top is best demonstrated in “can you spare a dime”. He strangles Mr Krabs. He’s competitive, like in the employee of the month episode.
    I mean, I have to ask, when you have setups for such AWESOME characters with so much personality, how the fuck could you botch a show so badly? You have rich, wonderful characters and you go out of your way to make them as insufferable as possible? Modern SpongeBob is a mess of old tropes, completely backwards characterization, and fucking NOTHING happening for an entire episode. Old SpongeBob had so many jokes in a minute. Mid to modern season SpongeBob is such a snooze fest. No tension, no comedy. Just stale. Either pull the plug or hire people with some fucking passion, because currently the writing team is jaded and asleep at the wheel. It’s really disheartening, I fucking LOVE SpongeBob.

    This episode was the most out of character Spongebob had been portrayed. It embodies all the flanderized traits and runs loops with it. His whole motivation was made explicit through character summaries and Spongebob voicing it himself to make everyone's day better. To flip that where he unconsciously makes everyone miserable and play it to hell like a broken record is just disgraceful to his characterization. I've never seen character assassination as bad as Spongebob. It's ridiculous. And the episode could have been saved if there was an emotional apology at the end instead of Spongebob burning down Squidward's house and sneaking away. Spongebob would NEVER not take responsibility. Even Good Neighbors got that aspect of him right. Sea Man Sponge Haters Club is the worst made episode in terms of Spongebob's character. It finally killed my 20+ years of dedication.

    My biggest problem is that they rely too heavily on faces, and less funny writing. Not to mention with the new art style And writing, Squidward and Mr. Krabs the more mature characters start to act on the same level as SpongeBob and Patrick sometimes. Even Sandy does it too, to the point where sometimes I can extinguish the characters from each other because that’s how bad it’s gotten.
    Relying heavily on funny faces and not really good writing Really does make the show Feel more empty. Like what happened to the jokes like in mid life crustacean: SpongeBob: “are you ready to go crazy!” Patrick: “I’m already hearing voices”. Clever jokes like that make me laugh not these over done funny faces.
    And that’s where I have a problem with the faces, not only because they’re unfunny, because it makes characters that were supposed to look mature look immature. It gets old so fast. In the original SpongeBob they try to balance it out with more writing jokes than just faces to make it feel fresh and and funny to see. The less you see of a funny face the more you appreciate it when you do see it.
    Also funny faces back then also tied into jokes and were not random. Like this show just really forgot that it wasn’t the funny faces, it was the writing that made it funny not just the faces.
    It’s like they’re really just leaning in more to the kid side of things instead of appealing to everyone. Which might be the case which is really sad because I feel like you could still have the show be successful an appeal to everything.

    a quick idea I had to fix the episode, What if these stories were fake versions of what happened because they don't like SpongeBob but in reality SpongeBob actually did things perfectly fine?
    for Bubble Bass' he thinks his order took hours longer than it should've, but in reality the order was actually one of SpongeBob's fastest (maybe he'd write down the time it took and bubble bass thought it was in hours and not seconds causing him to make up an entire story about just how long it took)
    Plankton's ruined story is about SpongeBob destroying all the technology in the Chum Bucket (including Karen) but it's a misremember of SpongeBob installing something to help Karen work faster (maybe Plankton would say something like "I just remembered a tool using tools")
    Mrs. Puff thinks it was the worst wreck SpongeBob has ever caused, but it was just a written test day and SpongeBob got an A (which checks out, it's the driving he's bad at not the knowledge) (then SpongeBob would say something like "the actual test is on Thursday" and Mrs. Puff checks what day it is)
    and for Squidward maybe he thinks SpongeBob ruined his best painting when he actually helped make it (then Squidward would give a backhanded compliment like "I guess you not as annoying as we all thought")
    this took me 10 minutes and I have no writing practice but this still seems better than what we actually got

Most of the time it come off good when it develop a connect to the world or the real world. But in this episode it feel more like exposition. Like a remind that Sponge bob make others lives miserable kinda like the Episode the play is the thing. Where squidward does nothing but put a play on how horrible life is at the Krusty krab. I agree. Self awareness doesn’t substitute for good jokes if the joke is purely that a character is self-aware. There should be some backbone to the joke, or just use self-awareness in short doses like with the first few seasons instead of entire episode plots. And I’m getting tired of so many SpongeBob episodes having reference after reference for no reason other than nostalgia baiting. Since then.. SpongeBob has really lost its flow to itself. I mean cmon, you got SpongeBob annoying squidward more than usual, which is most of the shows problem. Less fun to watch like it used to be. And overall just a headache to understand what’s going on. I know it’s a kids show but Nickelodeon shows has to have a show with characteristics, and some type of logic. (Or some story for that matter) What I’m trying to say is, Morden SpongeBob should be more like the Old SpongeBob. Not by style, but by the focus of characteristics, plot, and a certain interest to watch It. It just needs to slow down on the some of episodes. Initially it was this society with people (fish) that had depth and their own flaws, and whenever they were in an unexpected situation it was funny since they had to go beyond their character synopsis and interacted as such. They just don't have the same spirit that made me love the show as a kid, and granted the animation is really good compared, it feels empty seeing SpongeBob just be "the annoying one" when you remember him differently.

This SpongeBob really still have to be airing new episodes when people really only care about the first three seasons. Modern SpongeBob just seems mediocre to me which in my opinion in a way is worse than just being bad. Nick basically killed all of the cartoons that could’ve been as good as earlier SpongeBob. Harvey beaks and welcome to the Wayne we’re both pretty good shows with a lot of potential but they were killed and now barely anyone remembers them (especially welcome to the Wayne). The loud house isn’t even really good anymore to be honest so I’ve basically just been watching Disneys cartoons. Amphibia (i’m still in denial over the show ending) and the owl house mainly. The ghost and Molly McGee is also pretty good and I watch the new episodes whenever they come on Disney+

    Season one to three will honestly be my personal favourites! Back when a lot of lines were super quotable, the animation was simple and charming and they were practically just putting out hit after hit with keeping the characters super likeable and having everyone be able to enjoy it! As for the recent episodes… as beautiful as the animation looks I do feel like they need to tone back the expressions and wacky faces quite a bit! Old SpongeBob did this but it was always reserved for special moments every once in a while (which made it all the more funny when the wacky expressions appeared) but when they appear way more often in the recent ones eh…
    Kinda lose they’re magic (the animation is still beautiful though and really well done) I just think they need to hold back on the slapstick a bit more, as for jokes in the recent ones they’re fine and the overall episodes are fine.. nothing incredible like the golden years but good enough! I’ll take these over season 6-8 where they had episodes like the splinter and one course meal… although season 11 had ink lemonade which wasn’t great. But yeah new SpongeBob is fine, altho gotta say… older SpongeBob is a lot more quotable and typically had better writing in general, after the first movie (which was intended as the finale) flanderization occurred.

      @@Omniblox season four was okay! Not as good and a bit more mediocre but could’ve been worse, C. H. Greenblatt left the staff by the end of season four sadly. Season five was meh and six, seven and eight were really bad… I consider them the middle era of the show.

    I only gave up on SpongeBob ONCE and that was because my family couldn’t afford cable anymore sometime in 2011. Once we got cable again around mid 2014, I got to watch the show once more. Sure it’s changed from previous seasons, but it was still funny. The show’s visual gags are one of the few reasons why I keep coming back to it. It’s still funny from time to time.

    My personal favorite SpongeBob episode is Band Geeks, it's an all time classic and I still laugh at so many the iconic scenes from that episode. I just wish that SpongeBob still had that brilliance behind the characters that was in the first 3 seasons and the first movie. I gave up on SpongeBob after seeing disappointing and flanderized the characters have become in the latest seasons, the brand has no personality anymore and it just disappoints me.

    The saddest part is that this episode has such an incredible foundation for a plot to emerge. I would have never even expected these characters to have any reason to interact!
    Think about how in Gone, we don’t focus on the town’s attempts to have their getaway from Spongebob, it’s the punchline of an episode using that premise to put Spongebob in charge of a puppet theatre scenario where his creativity and isolation are the main focus. We get to explore Spongebob’s perspective in a new light and his genuine distress for missing the people around him. Heck, genuine care is practically what makes Mrs. Puff’s episodes so engaging, as even in the first boating episode there was a premise. Spongebob can’t drive a boatmobile, so:
    He gets Patrick to set up a headset for him so he can read boating instructions in his head, and so he gets disappointed in cheating.
    Mrs. Puff boosts his self esteem by making him hall monitor, but he gets carried away by taking on misguided vigilantism until he’s a wanted felon.
    ... and even beyond these examples and more, Mrs. Puff is still a teacher, so we can have episodes about procrastinating an essay, resolving a fight with your best friend, ditching school and scary bullies.
    You’re telling me they brought together Squidward, an apathetic adult who can’t be bothered to deal with Plankton or Bubble Bass, two characters who frequent the Krusty Krab for different reasons, and Mrs. Puff, a responsible and well-meaning adult (on paper), *AND* throw in an extra with no as of yet established character, together under one common connection, and we can’t take them somewhere together they haven’t already been individually plenty of times, except without any added context or stakes?
    This stupid, unimaginative crash course in the suspension of disbelief could have been a new Pressure, half a Band Geeks, or at least a Krabby Road situation. My Leg was a success, not for the overused meme, but because they turned a background extra into an actual citizen of Bikini Bottom with occupations and a love life. Instead it’s nothing. It’s a print of an AI analyzing Spongebob gags and character synopses, creating a generic script of it, also the mailman was there.

    I feel like SpongeBob just fell victim to every show that runs longer than it should: Singularity. People liked Squidward's gloomy nature, for example. As time progress and the show continued, ideas ran dry, and it became a matter of quantity over quality. The show reps looked out, since looking in obviously wasn't working, and they saw people relating to how gloomy and darkly humoured Squidward can be. So, they decided to play it up a bit. Everyone likes relatability, right? Right. However, over time, they went too far, and drained Squidward of what was the actual love of him. For his charm, his wit and sarcasm, his limits and his moments of defense for SpongeBob. That was what people actually loved, bc they made his gloomy dark humor more of a reward and appropriate setting. And the show reps failed to see it. So, Squidward reached a point of singularity, where he became solely his enraging annoyance and depressed ideations. It stopped being Squidward on his various days, good or bad, it became Squidward solely on his worst days, and no one desires that constant negativity.

    I feel like how you talked about Spongebob having the leeway of mid episodes because of its royal fandom is comparable to that of how I view WWE nowadays. Only difference is I still watch anything WWE and wrestling in general religiously while I can't necessarily remember the last episode I actively watched and/or enjoyed for Spongebob. Writers and/or fans of content can't always rely on the "it's for kids" or the "it's for that demographic" as an excuse for repetitive episodes (which, in some cases, can be worse than even the damaging episodes) when other shows aimed for the same audiences simply provide them better.
