    One of the things I miss the most about malls is when they decorated for Christmas and it was cold outside and people were rushing and pushing and fighting for the last Tickle-me Elmo. Dad's were honking and kids were crying and your hot chocolate was warm in your hands. All this chaos happening while Mariah Carey blared in the background.

      They used to turn the lights off in the amusement park at night, using "street lamp" lights and Christmas style lights in the trees. It had a real "Disney at night" vibe. A kid I went to high school with shot someone at the mall in the1990s. Because of that, they decided not to turn the lights off for safety reasons. At least that is what I remember. I haven't been there in years. I heard it was super sketchy now.

    • @lawrenceshdow
      @lawrenceshdow หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@laraerickson2926 its not sketchy. I worked there for quite a long time and the problems were super rare. Considering at all times it has as many people as a small city. more yearly visitors than Disney world... The amount of issues is actually super tiny comparatively. Probably because they have many many thousands of cameras being monitored by a huge team; in mall police department; and tons of very well trained security officers (most of which are military or police in training). They have drug and bomb sniffing dogs as well..

    3:33: When the Mall of America opened, each of the 4 sides was very heavily themed: North Garden had lush greenery and floral displays alongside, East Broadway had urban-style storefronts and street-inspired decor, West Market was themed like a European marketplace, and South Avenue had an upscale shopping ambiance with a mix of contemporary and traditional designs. The architecture is still similar, but the details were all removed and all 4 sections were all painted white. Also Nickelodeon Universe was Camp Snoopy, not like the regional ones today, this one was actually built by the Knott's family before they sold Knott's Berry Farm 😢

      @@EmbracingThePotato Agreed! It all looks so cheap and sterile now. All the trees and the river through the whole park were gorgeous, especially at night with the lanterns. It felt kind of mysterious in the best way imaginable. Loved that you could go there in the frigid winter and it still felt like summer camp. I didn't go to Knott's Berry Farm until last year, but I have a pass now and so much is the same, because it came first. So much nostalgia for a place I'd never been before because they did it so well in MN too. I'm glad they never touched the log ride, and even kept the Knott's syrup bottle.

      I loved Camp Snoopy way better than NU as well. Snoopy was created in MN so it made sense for it to be there.
      I forgot all about each side having special themes when the mall first opened. I actually worked there for the first year or so. I was only about 18 - 19 so I guess I just didn't pay attention at that age.
      Usually when I go to MOA it is still very busy, especially during the summer and the holidays.

      @@kathleenford1929 Thanks for sharing, I love that! I wish MN had more for Peanuts because Shulz created it in MN, but I guess he invested more as an adult into Santa Rosa and they named a lot after him and where his museum is. Now that I know Knott's Berry Farm and more of the history, it really was a spectacular confluence of events that led to the creation of MOA as it originally opened,. If anything was off my just a few years it never would have happened the way it did. I'm so glad I got to experience that original version, core memories for sure.

    Oh, man, the MOA is such a huge part of my childhood! I was about nine years old when it opened, and it was such a huge deal. It was the closest major mall to my house, so my family and friends I were there all the time. I can't believe how much things have changed (RIP Disney Store, American Girl, and the bowling alley), but I appreciate that some things are still hanging on. If they ever get rid of the Rainforest Cafe, I think there would be an uprising! I loved your tour of the Nick park! That place was in its heyday when it was Camp Snoopy. The theming was great, the rides were fun. The park never recovered its mojo after they lost the Camp Snoopy brand. It's only gotten sadder and more desperate-feeling as the years go by. I had never seen the "light show" before this video, and even I was unprepared for the "strobe lights flashing wanly for a few seconds followed by a fart of smoke" extravaganza! And somehow, it wasn't surprising XD

    As an elder millennial, malls are nostalgic, malls were a hub for the community back in the 80’s-90’s. People may of had cell phones but we were not addicted like they are now, eye contact and small talk with strangers was common. As a teen it was exciting to go there with your friend group. Maybe you’d see your crush from school, get a best friends necklace from Clair’s, talk about life, go see a movie and get some popcorn. But it appears malls have become a shell of their former selves. I hope younger people have places to go and experience life together.

    Malls originally started as a way to boost the income of downtown businesses by acting as miniature versions of city centers. The concept was simple-replicate the downtown experience in a single, convenient location, featuring smaller versions of popular businesses. At first, it worked well, providing a steady flow of foot traffic and promoting the downtown districts.
    However, when the economy took a downturn, sales and foot traffic in actual downtown areas started to decline. As the economy eventually improved, malls began to expand and attract more attention, pulling business away from downtown districts. Instead of helping to revitalize these areas, malls ended up overshadowing them, effectively draining customers and resources.
    Rather than serving as a living advertisement for the downtown experience, malls contributed to the slow demise of those very districts they were meant to support, transforming into stand-alone destinations that redefined urban shopping culture.

    • @RoamingRamble
      @RoamingRamble 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Today's retail landscape is shifting, but contrary to popular belief, malls themselves aren’t dying-it's traditional brick-and-mortar retail that's faltering, giving way to the rise of online shopping. Initially, small retailers bore the brunt of this shift, but many adapted by building a strong online presence or partnering with virtual marketplaces to stay afloat.
      Malls are now rethinking their roles and searching for the next big attraction. Many have started incorporating entertainment options like fun parks, mini golf courses, and go-kart tracks to keep foot traffic flowing. Even large retailers like Walmart are feeling the impact, as customers increasingly prefer shopping online for groceries and household items, leading to a decline in traffic to their massive stores.
      The future of retail is evolving, and malls are finding new ways to adapt to changing consumer preferences, blending entertainment with shopping to remain relevant in an increasingly digital world.

      In my city in New Zealand the city centre is expanding with shopping streets and pedestrian areas. Even in my town they are currently building a huge development in the town centre that’s a whole outside pedestrian shopping area. So I feel like downtowns are really doing well here. Why are they doing so badly in America specifically? Because I feel like downtowns and malls are doing well in lots of countries. I hate online shopping, going to an actual store is always way better and all my friends would agree.

    I don't hate the idea of malls becoming part experience and part shopping. Why not have the trampoline park, skating rink, ax throwing or arcade in a mall and also be able to get clothes in the same trip? This is a thing in my area and I think that's why malls are still busy here.

    The fact malls are dying in America has always really confused me because all the malls in my city in New Zealand are always packed and I absolutely love going to the mall. When I was in high school me and my friends would take the bus into the city then spend the day messing around at the mall, we could eat whatever we wanted from the food court, so fun. Being able to just park and then walk around is so much easier than driving to a bunch of different stores. I can also vouch that Japan has great malls too. There’s something about just getting lost in a huge mall and finding all these interesting stores you didn’t know existed.

    • @ChristineSimsOfficial
      @ChristineSimsOfficial 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      americans are lazy. And the mall owners are especially so I guess. I noticed before malls were really dead, I called it as a 10 year old that the mall was gonna die because they had put WAY too many baby stores in the mall. And i was right, that mall is legit DEAD. Only the theater is open now. And its been kind of similar problem since then. Where they put stores people are not going to into, in the mall. where they have too many similar stores. Like they dont know how to look for businesses that people actually want, that is missing. For example, our mall currently, they FINALLY opened up a makeup store. It wasnt even a full sephora store, and was combined with JCPenny. But it did AMAZING. So what happens next...they open up 2 more makeup stores, and then suddenly target sells some of the same stuff (thats connected to the mall). and usually Mac brand is in Ulta stores, but they opened an ulta and then a mac store right next door...like why?? we dont need that many makeup stores! Mac obviously didnt survive and is gone now, and so is sephora. They realized there was too much competition to keep them all open, but werent smart enough to open up similar themes, but not carbon copies; like a lush or something.. And then Opened up a doggy daycare center??? Which I've only ever seen ONE dog inside. EVER. People dont even bring their dogs in the mall unless its for santa photos at xmas time. and even thats rare.. And then make the Rent too high so businesses dont want to risk trying to open in the mall. but then dont do anything with the empty stores. which seems like bad business tactics. You fill the space to make money and pay the bills Am I wrong? lol. They say its just online shopping killed malls. I'd also say bad businessman are a huge problem too. If you dont fill the mall with places people would actually want to go to, then why would they go over ordering online? It sounds like other countries where malls are still hot, they actually fill the malls with places people actually want to go to

    Fun fact: when the mall first opened they had for “anchor stores” on each corner that were three stories tall, which were macys, nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, and sears. Because malls were so popular when moa opened, these anchor stores signed contracts that were pretty close to lifetime warranty. In the case of sears, that’s exactly what they did, and that’s why the space mentioned at 8:25 is closed. Sears has a lifetime contract, so they still own the space and no other stores can rent there. That’s also why sears still has their name on the side of moa
