Sweetness and darkness await you inside…”
Glad to see I am not the only one who appreciated the lore depth of this character. Everything about him fits what I know of traditional fairies.
I absolutely love this character, and the way Marc Warren played him was wonderful. I was so fascinated when I first read the book and saw how well he tied in with so many different aspects of fairy folklore. He deserves so much more recognition.
He is very underrated. He is the perfect fairy, love him. He has the lovely innocent elfin look.
The Gentleman really gave me a new appreciation for what a faerie can be like back when I first read the book.
I read the book twice and saw the movie series several times and no matter how much I read, watch and review this marvelous and mesmerizing story, I am always thrilled at the story. You cannot miss a word of the book because you have the sensation that everything, absolutely every word is crucial to the story.
I so agree. I've read the book twice. And I wish I could forget it all, so I had a good excuse to read it again. It is hard to put my finger on why it is just so utterly wonderful.
Thank you very much. I truely enjoyed Johnathan Strange and Mr Norell.
Wonderful period story. I can't rave enough about it.
kudos young lady,
I hope you have a dandy of a day.
I love this book and they did such a great job with the mini series. I agree with you on the fairy, he was perfect.
Absolutely agree. I love this book and have tried to get others to read it . Long before they made the series. I did think they might find it difficult actually portray the book. But they did it well. And yes , having seen varieties of, all my life. He is as close as you'll get to fae. I believe.
I think they did it very well! In many respects it reminds me of Neil Gaiman's Sandman in its depth, not just of story but also of lore. JSAMN is, I believe, one of those masterpieces which will always be very difficult to adapt, but they did a fantastic job. And I agree, he is the closest you can show to what fae are really like.
I've watched this and I loved it but I wasn't aware this was a novel as well. What is the book version called?
@@danybey4182 same title as the tv show.
@@jaynerobinson7008 thank you
He sure did dance though
I’ll be honest. I’m a D&D player. But I love creating my own and adventures and settings. And you are a wealth of ideas to play with. Thank you. Please go on for hours
I thought The Gentleman was brilliant! Also, I found the whole series very amusing, in a very dark way.
I love everything about JSAMN - I was so excited when the miniseries first came out! Easily one of my top 10 fantasy books period.
I loved this guy ! Thank you for the fascinating and comprehensive background material.
He's great, isn't he? I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Well done revuew and anylysis bravo
That last scene is the only one I wish was in the books. It's hilarious.
Same! I laughed so much at that scene!
If they had used something made of iron, instead of walnuts, do you think it would've worked?
the first that comes to mind from contemporary story is Prince Nuada Silverlance. I thought he was the actual hero of the story in the Golden Army as he wanted to restore Nature and Gaia back and get rid of all the polluting humans.
Agree completely.. the end broke my heart. In that movie. I thought it so sad.
Nuada being a name for an Irish Faerie, a member of the Tuatha de Danann
I just found your channel and binge watched a bunch of your videos. I've been extremely impressed. This video blew me away - it's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks so much for making these excellent videos - please keep it up!
Thank you so much, Dave! Welcome to the channel - I'm so glad to hear you like my videos!
Thumbs up
Thank you for the insight
They need to make the sequel now
Yeah i was glad to see some accuracy to fae in this series was really happy about that
This was awesome. Very interesting video. I watched the mini series and enjoyed it a lot (the faerie stuff was really great). I’ll have to check out the book.
Thank you very much! I highly recommend the book. It has so many more layers that the miniseries just couldn't have adapted.
Ngl, it's my all-time favorite show.
It's one of mine, too. The book is amazing and the series adapted it very well.
Super interesting
I wish SOMEONE would do a reaction to this show, it's amazing! :(
Thank you, I learning a lot and im improving my craft
Ohhhh I must watch this again!
for all those that game and dont know the game Nightingale is based in the fea relms from this searies and there is a this fae actor is the voice actor of your fea guide in game
I love the book, I have read it several times. I really love the audio book too. The mini series was well done but can't compare to the book in my opinion. Great video! Thank you for posting.
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I haven't heard the audio book yet but it's on my list! I think the miniseries did a great job considering they only had a handful of episodes to capture a masterpiece. It's one of those books which is impossible to get 100% right.
Huzzah! Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell! One of my favorite books. Have you ever read The Ladies of Grace Adeu?
I haven't gotten around to that one yet - my 'to read' pile is like a mountain at the moment! I can't wait to read it though. I hope it's as good as Strange and Norrell.
E. C. Hibbs I thought it was! :) It's a collection of short stories, one of which features Strange, and another is from "A Child's History of the Raven King", the book Norrell took such exception to; all except "The Duke of Wellington Misplaces His Horse" (though it easily could be) are set in the world/alternate history of Strange and Norrell. My absolute favorite is "Mr. Simonelli or The Fairy Widower", with "Mrs. Mabb" running a close second.
I love fairies :)
Amazing video.
Nicely explained! Have you read the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher? Contemporary urban fantasy series with top-notch faeries. Currently up to book 15 which is daunting, but book 4 is where the faery stuff really gets going. Fae politics becomes very important later on. The wizard magic is well done too; if you retcon out the 'everyone knows about magic' stuff, it could be the future of the Strange & Norrell world.
Made me play an archfey warlock in dnd lol
I wish to procure myself a faerie servant...!
Blessèd be /|\
Good stuff :D
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you very much for such an entertaining and informative video.
I'd also understood that it was a belief among royal families in Medieval times that baby Princes and Princesses were in danger of being snatched away by faeries as they were being delivered, which unfortunately led to Queens giving birth while being watched by a dozen people to be sure the child wasn't taken!
Is that true?
This cherub angel fairy knows something off the balance is off needs to be made right.
Do you have any suggestions for folklore books that have faeries that are similar to the Gentleman?
I'm more into Orcs but wow this is interesting
There isn't a significant difference in reality. They are very similar, just a lot more orcward.
Is the book not fantastic!?! And the whole depiction of fairies as charismatic but dangerous and tricky fantastic?!?!
I loved the character in the books. The series depiction was really lame in comparison
