Looking forward to seeing how you use up what’s in your pantry and freezer. You guys crack me up. I love the interactions between you and Shawn. Your love for each other shines through.
We do our pantry challenge when I reorganize the pantry. I will set everything that needs eaten (oldest dates and what we don't like) front and center on the kitchen counter so it is in my face. My rules are I can't touch the pantry but have to use whatever is on the counter. It makes for creative meals but they've always been good. Since shrinkage, I've turned the pantry upside down because one shelf that used to hold 2 stacked cans with empty space will now hold 3 cans with zero wasted space. Everything has it's own shelf so it is easy to see what we're low on - veg on one shelf, meat on another and fruit in the cabinet, etc. The freezer is the same with homemade stocks on the top shelf, chicken on the 2nd, beef on the 3rd and pork on the bottom. Oldest dates are on the left and the newer are on the right so I know to pull out the oldest first. The door had fruit and vegs and the basket has odd items like lunch meat and grains. The fridge freezer has all the little bits of leftovers that need to be eaten asap. If you think something might have freezer burn, don't let it thaw in it's own juices. Rinse off the ice well and let it thaw in a colander so it drains off immediately. I don't like the long drive to the grocery store so it may be 4-6 weeks or longer. Eat the produce that doesn't last long first (lettuce, greens, berries, melons, fresh green beans, summer squash, avocadoes) and save those that last longer for later (potatoes, carrots, cabbage, onions, winter squash, apples). Don't let anything rot by eating it immediately, freeze, dehydrate or home can it. Don't forget to freeze for at least 4 days things immediately from the store that could have weevils such as flour, rice and oats.
Morning! Thankyou for doing a pantry challenge the way that I interpret a pantry challenge to be. Which would not be stocking up ahead to get through the challenge. $3000., could be someone's annual food budget. It is up to interpretation, but that would not be a channel I would watch 😊. Keeping it real, being honest and sharing your experiences is what keeps me watching. The benefit is sage advice, great recipes. I live in Northern Ontario Canada, those weather conditions are part of our winter. Stay warm, fed and safe 😊
Hopefully this will motivate me, again. I started cleaning out the pantry and deep freeze, but life happens. I had not felt like doing anything. Happy Belated Birthday Baby Brother 🎉🎂 from one baby sibling to another!
I'm #20! He just cracks me up! Never a dull moment. I'm doing Canuary and Pantry Challenge this month. Busy, busy! $3000 in food gets her how much? maybe 5 bags of food? If she was buying new jars those add up really fast. I wouldn't buy all that stuff to make for the pantry challenge unless I have everyone here- all 9 of us. I'm already getting low on my pasta sauce. Yikes!
Day two we ran out of ketchup 😳 $3000 got her what my family eats in 6 months. It was all for show which is what made me mad. We use what we have not plan for it. I guess you get to make your own rules. I’m out of jars but I did get two packs from Azure so that I can do beans and some jelly with stuff I have to use up. Hope it is fun! You can always make pasta!
Thank you so much! 🙏🏻 my family is all right by the fire in AltaDena. My hometown is Monrovia which is right next to it. So far they are evacuated but safe. Thanks so much!
Dear Ali, thank you so much for getting back to me, AND SOOOO SOON TO!🤩. I wanted you to know I really appreciate that, as it's in my nature to do the same. Also, I am working on figuring out what we eat, use and should store or stock up on, it's a minute to do😂. It's on my " goals for 2025" to accomplish, so I will be referring to your channel. Thank you for sharing what I know must have taken a long time to figure out and accomplish let alone maintain. Also just started to check out your Etsy n stuff, really cute! Last thing, I use some of your recipes for spices, yum! ❤May the Lord bless you and your family!😇🙏
We’re allowing ourselves to perishables, like milk, lettuce, cukes, etc. We are doing our regularly scheduled (been doing for years) weekly lunches & maybe a dinner out with someone we haven’t seen in a while. Otherwise, home cooking here.
We still allow ourselves out date lunch one a week. If we run out of something that will cause a huge issue we will still purchase that as well. We ran out of ketchup on day two and the kid lives on it. One bottle will get us through the month.
Girl thank you for stating the obvious of what ppl are doing for the pantry challenge. Its terrible this year! I seen one homestead pay 2000.00 to prepare how simply redonculous. Cant wait to see what you guys come up with. thanks for being so real. stacie from rochester ny
Exactly!! Just don’t do the challenge if you are going to buy stuff to get ready. Doesn’t make sense. It’s trendy but you have to do it right to make it worth it. Ugh! 😩
You're so organized! Look at you making a menu! I'm lucky if I think 10 minutes in advance of needing to put together a meal, lol. Also, your kitchen is so big! I have almost 2 feet of working space, almost. It's sooo small! I've never done a pantry challenge, but I definitely should. We usually just donate items that we can't use right away, but I have learned to par down what is stored. Some of it we may never eat! By the way, I've stopped watching channels that do that stock up before the challenge. It makes me mad too, just feels so inauthentic. Thank you for keeping it real.
Best of luck in the challenge. Does this last for several months? I'm always filling my pantry with goodies and it's fun to then be creative with what recipes to make. It's my artist palette of assorted colors.
Ali, have you ever done a video about your root closet? We are having a house built and I am thinking about having a cold storage room done in the basement and need all the input and advice as possible.
I'm a little confused. I'm new at creating a pantry and storing etc. so I don't have a whole lot. My confusion is, " What exactly is the pantry challenge?" There was so much information, that at the end I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do, or should do.
Three rivers Homestead, who is another channel on TH-cam is the original person to do the challenge. You basically set an amount of time that you were going to try to do a limited dollar amount at the grocery store or no grocery store visits at all. Each person does it a little bit differently, but it’s great if you were trying to clean out pantries.
Basically, it is to 1) use up old food stuff in the pantry and freezer because we failed to rotate the dates and 2) not to shop to help get back financially after the holiday spending, ymmv. Most do it for a month but it doesn't matter. I just made a comment above for what I do if you want to look for it.
I’m NOT normal….never have been and never will be….so….I would love to have enough freezer space to do a challenge….I have a lot of dehydrated veggies and other shelf stable things…..I need to get a digital canner…..that would make our life so much easier! There are only 2 of us here. We have a good sized fridge but we need a freezer and don’t have room for one now. Not that we ever will…..LOL. I try to keep enough food here “just in case”….but you never know. My goal this year is to get a gas stove. Total electric stinks! We have a well…..we really need a whole house generator but you know how $$$ they are. We’re 75 and 78 years old….I’d give anything for a freeze dryer but I KNOW that will never happen….it would solve so many problems! Anyway, I love seeing what y’all are doing! And I love the humor in your dealings with each other. Reminds me of us! If I was younger, all this would have happened before now…..damn, being old sucks!!! ❤❤❤
We talk about getting gas/propane in our home too. All electric is a pain. I’m still not sold on the freeze dryers. I need to dig into it more but I do so much other ways I’m not sure if I’d ever spent thousands on one.
Looking forward to seeing how you use up what’s in your pantry and freezer. You guys crack me up. I love the interactions between you and Shawn. Your love for each other shines through.
Thanks, we try to be silly and keep things light hearted, it’s our way of being friends and married.
Y'all are a hoot! I tell my kids "normal" is a setting on the dryer. LOL LOL
Ha ha!!! 😂 so true.

We don’t freeze but add bay leaves to kill any issues. Sounds like you have a good plan.
Hope your friends and families are ok in California. I’m going to be doing a version of a pantry challenge.. what we don’t need/use will be donated.
Great idea! They are okay. Close to some of the fires and a few lost power. Scary stuff!
LOL ! Shawn keeps things hopping around there ! Love watching you two and thank you for sharing your lives with me ! A highlight of my mornings !
We are glad you enjoy watching our antics! 😂

Our middle kid lives in south Ontario. Kingston. We hope to visit this year once it warms up.
@@LittleHillHomesteadGa Wow, small world. Kingston is an area rich in history.
Thank you for bringing us along. I still need to organize my freezer and stores. Love the list idea! Blessings♥

It's hard to stay motivated sometimes, but you got this! I honestly took like a week off and didn’t do anything. I think this time of year gets to us
OMGOSH YOU TWO ARE AWESOME!!!! I needed this laugh!! Thank you!!
Love the entro! We’ve been watching the news this morning about the CA fires. Hope your families are safe.
So far they are but they are threatened by the Eaton fire. My best friend has been evacuated. Scary.
@ we will keep them in our prayers.
Looking forward to this.

“We don’t start on the first, because we didn’t want to.” You crack me up!
If “normal” people actually exist, they’re probably excruciatingly boring!
I bet they are! 😂🤣😂

Lime juice and what else
Hello, how are you doing?
Love your channel.
I'd like to know how to preserve eggs.
Thanks a lot ❤
We will be showing how to dehydrate them soon.

@LittleHillHomesteadGtthank you!

Hey do you know how to make ketchup home made.
We will this summer once we have tomatoes again
I watched and still didn’t get the recipe
There’s no recipe in this video. This is more of an explanation of why we choose to do a pantry challenge. Recipes to come
