Don't Walk Under the Plane Wings, Here's Why

  • There’s so much going on in airports and on board the planes that you don’t need to bother learning it all. But there are things you do want to know - yet no one will tell you about them.
Do you know, for example, why if you get off the bus and step away too much, the ground crew might ask you not to walk under the airplane wings? Or what a ‘decision altitude’ is? Or what is a reason you won’t ever see an elderly person or a child in the emergency exit row? Wanna know those and other secrets? Here they are!

    SUMMARY:
    - The wings of a passenger plane are quite close to the ground, and you can hit your head on them if you’re inattentive; and second, again, if an engine starts and you’re close by, you just might be wooshed into the turbine.
    - There’s an incredibly complex illumination system on the ground that helps the crew navigate the airplane, and it’s not just the red and white lights along the runway.
    - A ‘decision altitude’ is a point of no return when the crew has to make a choice: either to land the aircraft or to go up and make another circle around the airport. Any lower, and there would be no going back.
    - If an emergency does occur, the passenger sitting closest to the exit might have to open the door for the rest of the people on board.
    - If you lean back, you might block the passenger right behind you, and in case of emergency they’ll have a much harder time evacuating.
    - Regulations require that water be taken from secure sources, but not all airlines follow this rule and simply boil tap water.
    - Airplanes go through a very thorough check before every flight, and there are literally no secret hiding places anyone could use.
    - First thing that gets started on an airplane is not the engines - it’s the APU, or the auxiliary power unit. It’s a small additional engine located in the tail of the airplane that kickstarts the electrical systems and bleeds air for the engines and air conditioning inside the cabin.
    - You’ve surely noticed how much louder the airplane becomes when it’s landing. You might think it’s the engines, but in reality that’s the reverse thrusters being deployed.
    - On average, flights are becoming slower and slower with each decade. Today, for example, a flight from New York to Chicago would take about 20 minutes longer than it did in the mid-90s.

Another reason for not walking under the wing is due fuel vent's,
During refueling, the vents at the end of the wings are open to allow pressure equalisation, so vapour will be escapeing. also if the automatic shut off valves fail, they are also overflow vents to allow excess fuel to escape meaning anyone under the vent at the time will get a jet A1 shower.

I happen to be somewhat disabled, I walk with forearm crutches and I have cerebral palsy. Despite that, on one Relatively short flight over 40 years ago, about 400 miles or one hour, I was sitting next to the emergency exit. I was the one who said to the flight crew member “shouldn’t I move” and they said to not worry about it. Nothing happened, but that’s why I’m always very conscious to not get myself into the position of being next to the emergency exit.

Bit silly to suggest it’s fine to not wear your seat belt when the sign is off. You should wear your seatbelt at all times unless going to the toilet. Turbulence can happen at a moments notice, no getting signs from the air stewardess sitting down, and you can be throw up. There is literally no good reason to not wear your seatbelt at all times, no good reasons.

    • @rustyjohnson9558

Or complex. You would want it to be simple and reliable.....

    • @theinfiniteflightdeck
      @theinfiniteflightdeck 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To pilots, it is simple.
Basically, there are four lights. If all four are red, you are too low. If three are red and one is white, you are a bit low but okay. If you see two reds and two whites, you’re just right. Three whites and one red, you are a bit high. If you see 4 whites, you are way too high.
As four horizontal directions, you just line up with the runway. A localizor (a signal from a system located near the runwayj can be used to allign the aircraft before the runway are insight.

  • @traviscapehart7590
    @traviscapehart7590 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

There is another method that pilots use to find the runway. It can be used with or without lights or when weather is bad. It involves a complicated series of radio beacons, communicating with the aircraft that indicates the planes position relative to a recommended glide path assisting in landing both with directional input as well as altitude and ground proximity inputs. This is often called riding the wire, and can be done safely in zero visibility.

The only way to properly approach a helicopter is from the side due to the angle of pitch now being so great

2:31 the Decision Altitude is the altitude at which you must go around if you are doing IFR approach and don't have the runway in sight. And there is no "point of no return". You can go around at any point during the approach if something isn't right, from airspeed and altitude to cabin crew not being seated, or an obstacle on the runway. You can even go around after the wheels touch down on the ground.

I’ve seen both a person and a dog go ‘almost’ thru the arc of a spinning prop. Horrible!!

I haven't seen it yet but reverse thrusting is not needed to safety stop an airplane. It's only used to help keep the wear and tear on the brakes down.

1:20 Everything aboard an aircraft is moving at the same velocity as the aircraft. In a smooth flight the cabin crew, and passengers going to and from the restroom, are not in danger...UNLESS: the aircraft flies into an air “pocket,” an engine explodes, other incident that causes a sudden change in the velocity of the aircraft. That’s why passengers are encouraged to keep their seat belts fastened.
During take-offs and landings, the aircraft accelerates rapidly, changes direction suddenly.

5:50 what does it mean that passengers don't have seat assignment? Like you don't have a seat number on your boarding ticket? So basically a chaos at the line up before boarding the plane?

I flown many planes in my lifetime and never had problem drinking coke or pepsi while at cruising altitude😁😁

  • @bobobobo5924

1:35 When the plane is cruising, passengers can walk around and not die, right? The only danger during cruise is turbulence, but all of the things can go wrong during takeoff. It doesn't take a pilot to figure that out.

I heard reverse thruster are use to keep the brakes cool for a rejected take off when the plane tries to take off again.

      Absolutely incorrect :)
It's for slowing down the plane after it has touched down.

Bright side,If its really dark or foggy they have this thing called the ILS (instrument landing system)With some planes it can make the plane land it self but with other planes the ILS helps the plane land
