  • Traveling from Las Vegas back to Southern California after a weekend of fun can be a nightmare. Long, bumper-to-bumper traffic getting over the mountains. A stretch of Interstate that normally takes about ninety minutes, On Sundays can take you hours...
But there is an alternative. A "secret" backroad that is a little more scenic has much less congestion and will keep you moving.... Here is a look at that little-known route thru Topeca to Baker, California

I can attest to this route saving time heading back to southern California. I took this route even when some locals in Vegas I know did not recommend it simply because it feels like an abandoned area as you drive through it. I left Las Vegas around 11AM and I saw traffic building up on the 15S heading to Primm and beyond. I programmed my GPS with this route. Head towards Red Rock Canyon, then towards Pahrump, then towards the CA127. Which meets the 15S right near the world's largest Thermometer in Baker. Only negative thing about this route is at times you will drive straight for over 60 miles in length. It may make you sleepy. However there were gas stations along the route you can stop off and refuel your car and yourself. I highly recommend this route as it saved me at least an hour sitting in traffic. I hit a little bit of traffic in Baker once I got on the 15S. Highly recommend this route especially on a 4 day weekend.

Amazingly, I'm pretty sure THIS alternate requires less driving and takes less time than one people are likely to know about -- US 95 out of Vegas to I-40. Once you get to I-40 you have to double back and drive west a couple hours, and the those two hours of driving only get you to Barstow.

I just wanted to share a tip YES we always made sure we had plenty of gas, FULL water bottles and snacks for the grandkids. We ALSO made sure someone knew when were traveling as there is a spot where there is NO cell service as I'm sure will also be the case your route to LA so if we didn't show up by a certain time they knew where to look for us. (in 3 yrs we did have 3 flat tires and AAA took well over 1.5 hrs each time to reach us) IN the desert where the temps are unbearable the wait was brutal!! We would put up the sun shade and hang a shirt of a towel over the windows to help keep the heat out.

I’m from San Diego. Sometimes to get to and from Vegas I’ll take the I-8 East and either get on the 78 at Brawley and take to Hwy 95 all the way to Boulder or go all the way to Yuma and take AZ Hwy 95 and catch Hwy 95 outside of Needles or Laughlin. Little confusing as there are two Hwy 95s running parallel. I’ll do this because the traffic out of SD and then on Riverside and the Cajon Pass and then at Baker can get pretty bad. It’s a longer trip but AZ 95 has literally no traffic. Back in my sports car days I would open it up😁
Taking AZ 95 through Havasu is very slow so avoid it as well as thru Laughlin but sometimes we stop there for a night.
Hwy 95 in CA is a little rough for stretches and semis tend to use it quite a bit. The 78 out of Brawley has a lot of turns from Brawley to Blythe. Avoid AZ 95 during the monsoon season when it’s raining!! Late June to early- mid August.

I use to leave from Orange, Ca. on saturday morning and arrive in Vegas at noon and leave 330 monday morning and arrive at 730am at my office in Tustin, Ca. ready for work. No traffic both trips.

What was that back roads to red rock called? Couldn’t see the street sign
How much additional miles did this route add? It’s a very nice scenic route!

According to google it adds about 70 miles and an hour plus of driving, but when the traffic is horrible, it could easily save a couple of hours.
I made the mistake of leaving on a Sunday afternoon once. It took 10 hours to get to Orange county. Bumper to bumper from Vegas to Barstow.

@@ericday3538 It's not 70 miles i think it's about 26-30 miles if i remember correctly. Very little cars on the road so make sure your car is in top shape just in case. There was a time where i didn't see a car for 30 minutes on both side of the road. Also be careful with flash floods.

Awesome video ! Did you know there is a Short Cut to in between San Bernardino and Palm Springs,Ca ? This route takes LESS than 3 hours to get there. My wife and I travel to Morongo Hotel and Casino. Take I-15 South just past the Check Point there is a sign that says Nipton. Turn left follow that road, there is a gas station and old Route 66. Continue on and drive through some small towns and eventually end up on the Hwy toward Palm Springs and on the left is Morongo Hotel and Casino. Paul Klanecky

Not if you take the 58 to Mojave then hop on the 14, thats what i normally do when visiting LA, unless i'm heading to the IE.... in which case I try not to leave any later than 7 am.

I know about a handful of other ways that are better I’m not willing to disclose but this one works fine and most people are too lazy to go this way anyways.
