How practical do you think it is to have up-armored barbettes/turrets Vs. having a bit more armor on the rest of the ship? Not to throw shade on my forefathers, but it seems like having bigger holes in your ship's hull is more detrimental to your survival than having them in your guns when you're a lone ship like the De Zeven Provinciën.

    • @AtomicBabel

"The HNLMS De Zeven Provinciën, a unique cruiser/coastal defense ship/colonial gunboat..." Perhaps calling her a colonial defense ship may be an appropriate label. That aside, since they were cash strapped, did the Dutch go for a quality over quantity approach to her design? What was she intended to defend against at the time of her launch and/or commissioning? Could you also, in brief, elaborate on how she differed from the French and Portuguese avisos?

All things considered maybe the new name should have been the Prodigal Son

There where 2 more pantserschips both relegated to guardship dutys or Baracks
The slightly older Jacob van Heemskerck had slightly smaller main guns, 24 cm in stead of 28 cm of the zeven provincien , but had slightly more armour 2 morer 150 mm canons and 2 torpedo tubes. with the Marten tromp having 24 cm guns and just 4 150mm cananons.
Now imagine these 3 ships just pondering along behind the abda fleet they might be old but they do have a lot of firepower and armour to make some cruisers verry nervous.

@@marcusfranconium3392 my grandfather was a steeam engineer and also served as a scratch marine pioneer in the East Indies. He said those older coastal defense ships were all death traps and the wealthier officers (mostly nobility) had largely bought their way off of them. They were poorly staffed, and most of the competent fighting men were on the two newer cruisers and the destroyers.

@@420JackG I was talking about them as maintained and in service in a what iff scenario. . not as they where in the last decade , where they where largely decomisioned , turned in to trainers. mostley disarmed and even used as armour protection for the forts at the hoek van holland etc . If they where maintained ,modernised and staffed with out all the budget cuts of the 20s and 30s . they where still a threat to coastal landings. .
The older gun boats of the ijselmeer flotila and remaining river Gunboats of the Thor and wodan class. all served with merrit. and most of them where ww1 and some cases 70 years old.

The Seven Provinces, in English, this name refers to the founding of the Netherlands in the 1600's. Seven provinces united in a rebellion against the papal nobility, the Cardinal of Utrecht would flee, and the revolution was won by protestants. Later more provinces where freed from roman rule, making the current Netherlands a collaboration of 11 provinces.

Great post thanks. The air attack that hit its mark (even though it was claimed as you correctly stated that the aim was to miss) was in my opinion a wake up call for the Navy, flying corps and army as well as politics to take aircraft serious. This for instance kicked off the need for AA gun twin Bofors 40 mm stabilized naval gun mount. Later put into mass production when the Dutch navy fled to Britain.

The 33 submarines especially the 0 21 class with schnorkel side ways firing torpedo that baged a U boat also having the short 40 mm Bofors aa gun in a watertight container. The Brinio, Floris, and Johan Maurits van Nassau class gunboats. And the excellent K1 class being in effect diesel driven fregats callen gunboats. Van Kinsbergen escort, planned sub chasers. The single voice in Dutch politics to clearly and outspokenly support the De Zeven Provinciën mutineers was the left-communist Revolutionary Socialist Party, whose leader Henk Sneevliet had been among the founders of what was to become the Indonesian Communist Party, and who was sentenced to five months prison term for hailing the mutiny as "the beginning of the anti-colonial revolution". Sneevliet's outspoken position was used in the aforementioned right-wing campaign. However, for his constituency - mainly left-leaning intellectuals, especially in the more cosmopolitan capital Amsterdam - the RSP raised a large and effective campaign with such slogans as: "From the Cell to Parliament", "Make Sneevliet the public prosecutor in the Second Chamber" and "I accuse" (a clear reference to Émile Zola's "J'accuse"). The campaign worked and the party won a single parliamentary seat, the only such success in its history, and thus got Sneevliet released from prison.

    1. Brennan torpedo system, installed in Malta, Cork Harbour, Thames river
    2. Search lights - they figure into the description of many night actions - but on most pictures and models - they are not seen. ? where are they placed ? how were they powered? (arc light? incandescent?)
    3. Training programs -ships are technically complicated - so how are crews rotated on and off once standing navies became common.

I've often thought a good documentary could be made about the saving of ships, The Japanese seemed to have been good at it, The Italians saved several ships from sinking, The Americans saved all but two ships after Pearl Harbor, and The British raised and scrapped a whole fleet of scuttled German ships after WW1. Surely there is enough material to do something?
