I've been messing around with cables, guitars, amps and DAWs for years (and lately, hardware synthesisers) but I have, just recently, come to rely heavily on your channel for all the basic information it turns out that I didn't know. The level you pitch (neither pun intended) the information at is perfect - thank you very much for your work, it's appreciated greatly.
I know this is two years old, but I just wanted to say thanks for it. You've helped me understand how to better use the 1st Gen 2i4 I just dusted off for using again, I had no idea what the pad button did.
So happy I've found this channel! I'm an absolute beginner when it comes to the technical side of music production. Before, I have focused on writing/composing and now that I want to make the next step I am COMPLETELY lost because everyone throws these terms around casually and I don't know where to start. It's like learning English by reading dictionaries. Thank you for this video and great explanations!
Very helpful. Thanks. I was connecting my Korg Kronos keyboard to Apogee Duet 2 interface without thinking about the Instrument or Line difference. Sometimes I selected Instrument and other time Line, back in mind presuming they are both same!
I have the 212 interface and it has buttons for “air” “instrument”. Nothing specifically for mics other than the phantom button. I figured the instrument is for my guitar and keyboards, but is “air” for mics? I usually fiddle around until I get a good recording, but I would like to put my fiddle down 😎Generally I don’t need an interface as I record, mix and master on my Tascam 24 track Portastudio. I like it’s deeper softer sound. My DAW results in a hard edge, brittle sound (I either have a crummy DAW or don’t know how to use it properly) However, I use a computer program for video for which I need my mics and interface for voice over. Thanks for any help.
"Air" colors anything going through the preamp (i.e. inst/line level/XLR). This is a good video about the Solo, which is basically the same as the 2i2 less a channel: th-cam.com/video/VSgzF79ivd0/w-d-xo.html
the 'air' option is to model a particular kind of pre-amp - it is particularly useful for vocals and acoustic instruments. If you want to record with a mic, then you should use an XLR lead. The interface will then expect a mic input. If you use a 1/4" jack, then you select instrument for a guitar or similar, deselect instrument for line input. As you only want to use the interface for voiceovers, then use XLR for microphones, and experiment with the 'air' to see which sounds better for you. On or off. The 'instrument' will have no effect if plugging in a mic.
I would appreciate if you could do a video on how to record audio from MSTeams meeting into Olympus voice recorder DS-5000. Laptop has only one 3.5 mm socket. This dictation from the speaker in MSTeams on the other end is then transcribed by a secretary after the meeting.
Thanks for the video , very useful and clear. QUESTION : What is a headphones signal ? INS , Line, mic? If I want to connect my phone through its headphone OUT ( or an AKAI MPK MIni Play with its headphones line OUT) into an audio interface, how do I treat it? Thanks
I have a Fender solid state Tone Master amplifier with an xlr output on the back of the amp. Can this be plugged directly into a effects pedal board and then run the output cable from effects pedals to the interface and or mixer xlr input then to daw on computer. Great videos.
Thank you for you video ! I have a question regarding my future setting. To avoid unplug cable from my gears (bass guitar, pedals etc), i have ordered a DI box. I will use an XLR cable between the DI Box and my Audio Interface (a berhinger). So my question is : does i need to select line or inst ? As the DI box convet the signal to low impedance, i suppose i need to select line option ? Thanks !
All the videos on audio interfaces I have seen do not discuss output from acoustic instruments with under bridge pickups. Are they line, instrument or mic level?
This was super helpful - thank you. If I am connecting a mic via XLR to an interface like the 4i4, does the selection of Inst vs. Line in the focusrite control software matter or is it inconsequential in this scenario?
The question I’m asking, it seems no one has a direct answer for, or at least not that I’ve found so far. I have 2 Mackie Thump Go speakers (200 watts each,) and I am running from a TC Helicon Play Acoustic microphone and guitar effects processor with DI into a Harbinger Mixer, which goes into the speakers. When running into powered speakers with line/mic switch, which should be engaged, considering both mic and guitar are being used from the main right and left outputs of the mixer ? Particularly in this instance where I have 2 outputs on my guitar. (Channels 2 and 3 of the mixer, and the mic in channel 1) One for the onboard preamp to the humbuckers, and one for the piezo. I blend both sounds for a fully rounded sound when playing alone. It seems the level was too low when I tried using line level settings. But perhaps it is because I didn’t have the volume of the faders at UNITY in the Mackie App. Thank you kindly, in advance!
So if I'm using dynamic mics to record a guitar cabinet do I use line or instrument? I'm assuming since they have a low signal it would be instrument. But not sure.
Great video; although it is not clear how do you know when you are clipping, except if you look at the light ring. Also the interface has levels too, doesn't it? I have a Focusrite too, and the panel itself has a gain for the monitor outputs and headphone output; on top of the gain for each of the hardware input... So how do you set those to have a starting point? Because if you move back and forth between the instrument volume knob, the gain knob on your input on the interface and the level slider in the audio interface settings, there is no clear way about how to set up the reference level.
I think the controls on the Focusrite are not very precise. So you need trial and error and monitoring the levels in your DAW. I talk a bit about that in this video th-cam.com/video/ASntRNmJMFQ/w-d-xo.html It's a fair point. I also have a Zen Go Synergy Core Interface which is much more precise and therefore easier to replicate settings.
Great info but how do I know what type of signal comes out of my digital piano or synths or drum machine? My Miniogue puts out a strong signal, probably line level but my NTS 1 puts out a terribly low signal , not even usable through my mixer.
I have a RC300 looper and wnat to use the LINE IN for a dynamic mic with an output jack. I would need before connecting it to boost the level somehow, right?
Sorry if you have replied to this before in another video; I haven't seen all of them yet... I am mostly a songwriter (and bassist) and I want to record stuff at home, so... I want to simulate having pedals in front of the amp (dirt pedals) and other pedals (modulation) in the fx loop. What is the best way to do this for recording? Should i use dirt pedals -> pre amp -> modulation pedals -> cab simulator (something cheap...) -> usb interface? I also use Reaper as a DAW, nowadays. Maybe using a cab sim on the daw and keep everything else?
And when I connect my electric guitar to Apogee Duet 2, I should select "Instrument" - correct? unless the electric guitar signal is being fed through effects processor (Boss ME80) in which case I would select "Line" - correct?
Hello, can I connect a mixer directly to a computer? Using a dual ¼ inch ts plugs to 3.5mm trs plug? What are the advantages and disadvantages to this setup compared to using an audio interface between them. Thank you
Great video. Beginner here. But a Rode NT5 condenser mic and discovered an Audiobox USB 96 could not sufficiently power it. I ordered a DBX 286s preamp/processor. My question is, since my audio interface does not have line in, will my setup be less than optimal if I have to use a line to XLR cable as opposed to line to line? If so, I may bite the bullet and just get a better interface. Thanks in advance!
I finally got some sound to come out of an amp/speaker, from my mic and from my guitar. Next step is to get it into my computer and record it there, and then play it on my amp/speaker. I'm not worried about the quality of the sound. I have a Focusrite Solo. Will the sound go into my computer on the Solo's USB connection? I'll be using an e-board that was recommended by Focusrite users, or a simpler if I can find one, to start. Thanks.
hi music pro i have mackie fx pro 12 channel v2 ,it only has 6 mic input, now i need to plug in two more mic, can i used line in of another channel for mic can you tell me what i have to do thanks for your reply
Great video - my question would be the next step in terms of setting levels Ina multi track recoding... I'm now struggling to hear what i am recording (mostly guitars, bass or keyboards) when my project gets 'busier' as more tracks are added. For example trying to record a guitar solo and constantly chasing volume...... thanks!
I have started to play a virtual Organ (GrandOrgue). I have connected the keyboard via MIDI cable to the Laptop to play the organ software. The audio signal from the headphone output is very weak for my home stereo system. And it sounds horrible. Only the sound via headphone is very good. What can I do? Is the Focusrite amplifier suited? Your channel is very helpful to me. Thank you very much!
I am using the eye track solo on my iPad, I do this because I am blind and use the voiceover function on iOS. Is there a way to play backing tracks through the instrument channel? Thanks in advance
Awesome video, super clear and helpful! Even now I still find myself in confusing scenarios however, just bought a Prophet 6 desktop which is unbalanced out (TS) going into a balanced Clarett 4 pre, so im not sure if I should be using Line level, or Instrument level as the two ends are conflicting? Any ideas?
Hello form Portugal. Can you give me a little help? I intend to buy an interface Tascam US-16x08 but when looking at the manual, when looking at the diagrams, I got the idea that to monitor channels 3 and 4 I can only do it using outputs 3 and 4, to monitor channels 5 and 6 it must be through 5 and 6 outputs and so on. It doesn't make any sense but that's what I understood by the scheme. Can you enlighten me?
Great channel, just stumbled across it! One suggestion for a posting: how to slice up a track in Audacity and save each slice as an separate mp3 file. That'd be fab!
Mam, I am new to AV setup, and my company has send me on project having AH QU24 mixer and power speaker Yamaha, I am not able to use mixer connection and also it's setting for bass, voice etc, please help me by having some video of the Aleen and heath mixer with all connection and channel setup.
What do you do if using a Sure M57 mic and you have to push the the gain right up on full into the red to get even a little sound? The Focusrite claret is set on instrument ( not line)and doesn't have a pad switch.it has been suggested that a cloudlifter or booster (by a novice) is required is that correct? Thank you
I have a Shure SM7B and I also use a Triton FetHead (which does the same job as a Cloudlifter) to boost the signal. Very quiet without. You may find you need similar for your mic www.tritonaudio.com/fethead
Hi there! I am trying to record my guitar through my Strymon Big Sky effects in Logic Pro 10.6.1 via a Clarett 4 Pre and I get sound from my monitors and the Clarett is showing signal activity but Logic doesn't pick up any sound in the the audio channel strip. I plugged my Strymon mono out to my Clarett input one and switched to instrument. I am so discouraged with the frustrations of all this technical shit! Can you help me?
So analog synths would have to go through a line input, not instrument input? I was hoping I could use it in conjunction with a mic but I won’t be able to do it at the same time if I can’t use the instrument input. Damn! Should’ve considered this before buying my interface.
Thanks a lot! I heard about DI and I wonder in which case we use it : line, mic, instrument input? My problem is when I record my bass (plugged in instrument input), if I slap it clips... even if the gain is at the lowest on the audio interface. So I can't record slapped bass :'(
Hopefully a DI box might help you out. The primary function of DI boxes is to take an unbalanced, high-impedance signal and convert it to a balanced, low-impedance signal. This allows you to run guitar and bass directly into microphone preamplifiers.
@@MusicRepo Thanks again =D So instead of [bass -> instrument input], I'll try [bass -> DI box -> mic input] Now I have to choose between an active or a passive DI box ^^
When I take a line out of a Line6 amplifier and use a 1/4 inch cable to connect to a Behringer UMC202HD Audio Interface and connect to JamKaZam online Jamminh software should I use the Inst setting on that channel on my interface? And for my Ekectro Voice mic use the line input level ? It does not use phantom power.
If you are taking line out of amp, then you need to use line in on your interface. The Elektro Voice mic should be connected using an XLR cable, and ** if ** the instructions for the Behringer UMC202HD are the same as for the Scarlett interfaces, then by using XLR the interface will automatically assume you have connected a microphone, and so won't matter whether you switch to line or inst on that channel. But I urge you to refer to the manual to check this... !!
Hello there, I am currently using the scarlet 2i2 and I am using my guitar instrument cable to connect my keyboard using the keyboard's phones output and I set my scarlett to inst mode. Everything seems okay and there is no clipping but should I set my scarlett to line mode?
I think you can. Experiment by turning your keyboard output all the way down and the AI gain all the way down (you should always do this to start anyway). Then bring your keyboard up, possibly to max, while watching the clip indicator. If it never clips and you want a stronger recording level (-12db or so), start bringing the AI gain up till your recording levels are good (monitoring the levels through your DAW and the clipping indicator ring on the AI). The only really "dangerous" thing to be aware of is phantom power. Make absolutely sure that it's off for every situation other than a condenser mic which uses it. It's potentially hazardous to your equipment because when on, you are going to supply 48V back to the signal source, which if not designed to accept can cause bad money-wasting things to happen. For the best recording, you want the strongest signal from the source (keyboard in your case) with the least gain from the AI necessary. This will keep the noise introduced by the preamp in the AI to a minimum. Shoot for -12db in this manner and your recoding will be cleaner with headroom if you need it during the mix phase.
@@jeffcuthbert6078 thank you so much ☺️ also if I have a condenser mic connected to my scarlet as well as a line/inst input simultaneously, will using 48v phantom power for my condenser mic harm my line/inst input?
@@billyw3130 I would download the user guide from focusrite.com if you already haven't. But it looks like the one 48V button causes phantom power to be delivered to both XLR inputs at the same time (versus just one or the other). The user guide gives the impression that despite this you can still use the other TRS input simultaneously. This makes sense since phantom power only goes to the XLR inputs. So I think you're OK to use both inputs simultaneously with 48V on and one of the inputs being a 1/4" line level/inst jack that doesn't use it. If still unsure though, contact Focusrite and ask them.
Thank you so much Jane to share your knowledge with us. Your videos are excellent to get started! But as a brass player, I would appreciate some advise. Using a basic Presonus audiobox USB, what would be your set up to record an euphonium? Through an amplifier, or straight through the audiobox using a condenser microphone? Many thanks!
Is it good if I'm recording my audio in (green) gain?.. sometimes I need to bring up the volume of the tracks after the recording is it normal or I'm doing it in the wrong way?
Hello Jane, love your videos. Qstn: Sometimes while recording in Audacity, I notice clipping (the Audacity VU meter is bumping into red zone) even at minimum gain at the source. But if I don't turn the source gain up then my final recording in Audacity sounds way too low on playback :-( How do I avoid clipping during recording and still get a reasonable play back level?
Hi Madam! Hope that you are doing fine. There are no words that I can come up with to say about you Madam. You are like the encyclopedia in this sector. I am new to all this recording and stuff. My question is, is there any interface or sound module like dexibell vivo sx7, which can be connected to a digital piano to generate different tones without connecting it to a computer? Like piano to interface and then to amp or speaker. My idea is to buy a digital piano but I also like to have some extra tones to play with. But it costs more when a digital piano has many tones. All I want to hear, is some extra tones on my amp or speaker by connecting to a medium which doesn't face any latency. If this is possible then I can save some money. If you can give me an insight, it'll be helpful for me Madam. Thank you !
th-cam.com/video/5A4TNHJrUHE/w-d-xo.html This saved my life I was just wondering if I could connect a Behringer X1832usb that has XLR main outputs to my old Scarlett 2i2 using XLR, fortunately I saw this and wont make that mistake.
I love your passion and expertise, but for me you talk way too fast, and unstructured. So my questions would be: If you have turned on phantom power, many pre amps will put phantom power on all input connections. Can you still mix line, dynamic mic and condensor mics on the same device? second question: would you advise a passive electric bass on line or inst? And what about an active bass? Would you recommend to turn up gain of the instrument or gain of the pre amp to get a decent signal out of the pre amp?
Please don't use the editing technique that cuts out all dead space. I need the space between your sentences to absorb what you just said before you go on to a new idea

@@MusicRepo thankyou so much for your valuable information
What Hi-Z means, and how it is applied in the audio industry,?
Hi-Z is used for Guitars and Basses that do not have a preamp installed. Their signal output is very low and needs an input with high impedance.
@@mulldruff Nice info, thanks..
Can you help me?
can trs cables solve the purpose of ts cables
well done ----
Hi put video wat
all equipment connect n line level mic level instruments level speaker level very detailed
@@MusicRepo Thanks again =D
So instead of [bass -> instrument input],
I'll try [bass -> DI box -> mic input]
Now I have to choose between an active or a passive DI box ^^
@@MusicRepo Thanks so much for your reply. Great information.
Anything on recording drums?
Is it good if I'm recording my audio in (green) gain?.. sometimes I need to bring up the volume of the tracks after the recording is it normal or I'm doing it in the wrong way?
Hello Jane, love your videos. Qstn: Sometimes while recording in Audacity, I notice clipping (the Audacity VU meter is bumping into red zone) even at minimum gain at the source. But if I don't turn the source gain up then my final recording in Audacity sounds way too low on playback :-( How do I avoid clipping during recording and still get a reasonable play back level?
why would anyone dislike this video? what an ungrateful people seriously.
You can’t please all the people all the time 😉
Thank you !
Does this ring true?
Inst = acoustic inst
Line = device like sampler / keyboard synth
Yes, Inst is like Bass or guitar. Line is much hotter like a synth.
Just to clarify for me: If I have a microphone plugged into my Focusrite interface via XLR in, the Line/Inst switch has no effect?
Thanks!
Yes, that is the case 👍
@@MusicRepo Many thanks!
Hello again friend
th-cam.com/video/5A4TNHJrUHE/w-d-xo.html This saved my life I was just wondering if I could connect a Behringer X1832usb that has XLR main outputs to my old Scarlett 2i2 using XLR, fortunately I saw this and wont make that mistake.
Will you marry me?
Please don't use the editing technique that cuts out all dead space. I need the space between your sentences to absorb what you just said before you go on to a new idea
Too quick…too quick…..too quick…..
I am asking to myself why your videos are more confusing....Maybe your personal style doesn't fit me.
