Ichigo, wasn't a swordsman for the first half of the show. He was never trained and freelanced most of his technique. Even his inner hollow judged him on the improper use of his sword, while bolstering his own unique style. And not that it makes this common occurence but you also had zaraki, who was another character who displayed a low level of zanjutsu. But that was because they stopped teaching him midway through his teachings. Lets not forget he failed to remember something as simple as using 2 hands for more power transfer. On the contrary there are plenty of sword users that display a lot of skill and finesse. Even lieutenants such as hisagi shows more skill than ichigo before beating grimmjow had. But it's easy to understand why ichigo never had a good basis of swordplay. He never had time to train and learn until After rescuing rukia.
@zenraloc Ikkaku stated that Ichigos sword technique was nearly as good as his own in their fight during SS (chpt.87). At that point, he had 2 months of training with Rukia and 10 days with Kisuke. By the time he got to Byakuya, he was much better again with 3 days from Zangetsu and a full battle against Renji and Kenpachi. I'd say he was pretty skilled in the first half as well. Good video. It’s likely the series focus on the straightforward power ups that leads to the idea it lacks on the technique side of it’s combat. Like Kenpachi beating Unohana always came down to power. Lack of skill was never punished only a lack of power.
I don't believe that fight came down to a lack of power. It's not as well defined in the manga but the anime makes it more clear that not only was Kenny getting stronger but he was copying her moves. As you see when he uses the exact same footwork she did earlier in the fight to wound her. In the manga Shunsui explicitly states it to teach him how to use his sword but Kubo leans more on their personal life than the fight itself. Also I can think of fights where lack of skill was punished and not power, Shuhei vs Findor, Izuru vs Avirama, Ichigo vs Byakuya (lack of skill on Ichigos part nearly led to his death and he was as strong as Byakuyas true Bankai form).
Bruh Kenpachi was literally dying for and coming back for 3 days straight because of his lack of skill compared to Unohana. He adapted to her skills and strength as the fight went along. That was the whole point of the fight!
@@crysiser6440 The whole point of the fight was Kenpanchi regaining the strength he subconsciously locked away. He already beat Unohana as an untrained child.
@@2centswanted113 It’s Unohana emphasizing Kenpachi’s holding himself back, the fact he already be her before while untrained, and Kenpachi’s style remaining relatively unchanged that kinda less the weight of Shunsui’s statements on the situation. I don’t remember the other two from the manga, but Ichigo vs Byakuya came down to Ichigo’s Bankai running out of speed because he hadn’t mastered it but that doesn’t really correlate to Ichigo’s swordsmanship. That’s more of an example of someone getting stat checked.
The problem is that Ichigo is relatively untrained in swordplay. He has some basic, sure, but most of it is instinctual that he learned in live combat. Ichigo isn't a slouch, to be clear, but he's nowhere near as skilled as many of the characters he's compared to. This is similar in hand-to-hand comparisons as well, where Ichigo is good and has training, but doesn't specialize the same way the other characters picked do. Because Ichigo is the character most often used in comparison to other verses, it creates this idea that the other characters from Bleach are the same... They just forget that pretty much every character other than Ichigo and his human friends are multi-hundred year old individuals with, at minimum, a century of training in various styles of swordsmanship. I find it weird that people will bring Erza into an argument about swordsmanship, despite not being the main character of Fairy Tail, but then use Ichigo instead of Rukia or Renji, whom would definitely go far higher in terms of pure sword skill. That's not even counting the characters like Toshiro/Gin, geniuses in all Shingami combat forms, or Byakuya/Kyoraku, heavily trained and experienced. Unohana is arguably among the best characters in all of anime when it comes to sword skill.
@lo4tr Your selling Ichigo very short. Ichigo was already near Ikkakus level in sword skill during their fight, and that assessment came from Ikkaku, whom trained Renji. By that fight, he had only 2 months of training with Rukia and 10 days with Kisuke. That was before fighting Renji, Zaraki, and Byakuya. By the time he got to Byakuya he was matching Byakuya blow for blow when their speed equaled out. He was definitely in or at least near the Captain class in technique just by the end of SS arc.
And do not fall to the appearance of Espadas who have katana at their waist. Cause the katana is just their OG hollow power but in sealed blade form . And obviously as hollows originally do not use sword or katanas, Espadas also do not have distinct sword fighting style or not using any sword style at all

Do not get me wrong, loved the show, watched it from somewhere 1987ish.
But to say that martial arts makes the day for the main cast and not energy bombs is like calling basic salad bar the healtiest powerfood available to mankind.
If you like more martial arts used proper in a series, Baki the grapler, Kenishi the mightiest deciple. They to are not perfect.
Still, I love DB and Bleach is my favorite anime post 2nd milenium, but it is not Hema/fencing/wartime saberplay here. They are mages/warlocks without wands. Instead they have shapeshifting swords and I love it.
this makes me want to devise a martial art style that takes advantage of flight@@2centswanted113

Anime fans don't know shit about anything and tend to have terrible memory. So most people only remember the "cliff notes" of the story and weren't actually paying attention to detail. As far as most people know Ichigo won his fights with a "slash attack" and thats it.
Which is disappointing sometimes because it's the lead up to those attacks that are the best. Like recently, everybody remembers Itadori's black flash max punch but just before the dopest "boogie-woogie" fake out occured
I love the Anime SO MUCH. BUT they FAILED at lubos world building and power system. I watched bleach video essay and more non stop since 22 of July when Bleach kicked out HXH at my no.1.
I saw @Radman video on the world building and besides reaishi, reiastu, shikai and bankai
I didn't know about konoaku, they can black reiastu at the wrist and more. From this ALONE people believe kubo was slacking. but we know HE WASNT. His panels ALONE!!! ARE CLEAN
In the Dangai, when ichigo see tensa zangetsu for thebforst time. Tensa just SWINGS and pushing ichigo. The line work auperb, ichigo reaction screamed WTF. I AM SO HAPPY TYBW I'd the greatest of Bleach
Bleach's swordsmanship is legitimate; This isn't Zoro doing B.S. with two/three swords.
@@Frstypwngaming always remember. Spinning like a helicopter while holding a sword in your mouth is one of the oldest IRL techniques. You're just a bias Bleach fan. (Sarcasm)
@@2centswanted113 It's not even anything against Zoro either it's just way more accurate to say Bleach is the best example of swordsman depiction in the "Big 3".
@@Frstypwngaming I agree.
