Masterful, very deeply so. No American has come close to this man, on just about every level of the dramatic performing arts.

This really is a great reading of that scene. As a man Welles had an extraordinary intellect and one sees he had a deep understanding of this play, this scene, this character and the world around it; as an actor he had such a colourful and wide-ranging youth that he wrote of meeting real Shylocks, real Iagos, real heros and villains in the back streets of the 20th Century. It all comes together in this great little glimpse into his talent. Having said that, when he got bored of something it could be awful. This nice little jewel shows him at his best.

awesome -- that dean martin would share orson welles on his show to perform Shakespeare on a comedy variety show. you could hear a pin drop, everyone was so enthralled with his performance. what a great opportunity to hear and see this wonderful actor. thank you for posting.

sumo fann You know, so many people, even today, dismiss Dean as just a drunken lightweight crooner, and Dean himself was always self conscious and embarrassed about his lack of formal education. But to the best of my knowledge, he was the only big star of the time brave enough to feature something of this quality on a prime time TV variety show.

Orson loved Shylock. He did a bunch of different versions of this great speech.

What a voice. He makes everything sound superb as he does for every word he speaks. Shakespeare would have loved him. He made Shakespere understandable to all.

Imagine all of the plays he has done - this is a side of Orson we don't to see often. Thank goodness for all of the recordings we have - Orson was tremendous and continues to inspire the films I make.

This was fantastic! Would loved to have seen Mr. Welles in costume, as he did for his Falstaff appearance, but still totally effective. This man could've made an inhuman robot interested in Shakespeare!

He wanted very much to have played Don Corleone in The Godfather. He would have given Marlon a run for his money !

And unlike Marlon Brando, Orson would have remembered his lines.

The speech given here by Orson Wells is so similar to the speech by Don Corleone That is the opening five minutes of the godfather.

I like Orson Wells, but this is not a good impression of a Jew. If a person called a Jew all kinds of names and 6 months later, the guy was asking for money, the Jew would not turn him down. The poor bastard would have to pay 30% in Vig. That’s what a real Jew would do. Money comes first! It’s business! The Jews love money more than their children, and they really love their children very much! Ohhhh Vey! 😂
